Cardiff. Southampton.

New York. It was just grey and dull at eye level. Times square was OK, but the rest was a bit meh

This. Manhattan was the biggest disappointment.

I recognise that IABU for being a massive SATC fan in my early 20's; however, this meant that I was super excited when my fiance surprised me with a 30th birthday gift trip to the big apple 🍎. I had awful jet lag for the first 48hours and then just couldn't get my head round how grey, concrete and 'new' the whole place was. I recognise that this realisation was also ridiculously unreasonable.

I never yearned more for baroque and gothic European architecture more than I did for the entirety of that city break...

Disagree entirely. Absolutely loved Venice, no smell and the weather was amazing. We visited in Spring. To be fair I think it can vary depending on when you visit, low tides etc but it was perfect when we visited.

I loved Venice too. I don’t understand when people say about the smells, that was fixed years ago. It didn’t smell at all when I was there in the height of summer. The islands are lovely.

Dublin - like Birmingham but ten times more expensive.

TheHateIsNotGood · 20/05/2023 17:49

Sozopol in Bulgaria - only went because a work colleague said her friend really liked Bulgaria. So I went to a different little town than the main resorts. To be fair, it was 1994 - but it was an unpleasant place for a holiday as many locals weren't keen on westerners visiting, which they made plain, some just shouted at me, one mimed strangling me.

Still, it was quite interesting and Sozopol has cobbled streets and stone houses and I had an apartment in one of those overlooking the Black Sea.

And when it started raining after 3 days I could see how the Sea got it's name, it seemed to turn Black.

Las Vegas , artificially lit rooms crammed with people obsessively feeding slot machines when it looks as if they have little cash to spare in the first place. All you can eat buffets that make you long for a plain , undressed green salad and a glass of tap water . The fastest growing city in the US but I wonder what sort of values a child growing up there will imbibe.

Munich but only during Oktoberfest. Much less fun than it sounds , very unlikely to get a seat in the beer halls without pre booking as part of a large group and a definitely threatening atmosphere as darkness falls. Also suspect some "racial profiling " going on as to who they let in the halls.

Anywhere where a cruise ship/ships have just disembarked . Crowded , noisy and rushed , visit after the crowds and enjoy.

Lived in Munich for years and it’s a great place in many ways but don’t recommend going for Oktoberfest to experience it at its best

The tourist 'attraction' at Lands End, Cornwall was also a big disappointment, what a dive.

Lands End itself is stunning, the scenery absolutely breathtaking.

Tots678 · 20/05/2023 17:50

The Grand Canyon is 20 miles across (the top) - how can you not be impressed ???

Think of somewhere 20 miles away and imagine a gap that big!

PeloMom · 20/05/2023 17:51

Honolulu, Hawaii.

I spent 3 weeks touring New Zealand and loved it every minute, stunningly beautiful country

It is. We did 3 weeks Australia + 3 weeks NZ for our honeymoon.

LostFrog · 20/05/2023 17:51

Absolutely Las Vegas. It was cheap, tacky, full of desperation. I hated it.
Also Rome, but I think mainly because of the constant racism, which was a real shock after Paris and Barcelona.

Radiatorvalves · 20/05/2023 17:52

Moscow. Went for work about 20 years ago and found it threatening and round red square it was all Prada and Gucci. Grey and cold although Red Square is impressive.

I haven’t had a great experience of Cornwall. Yes I know it can be stunning but I’ve been unlucky with the weather.

The Maldives won’t be somewhere I go back to. To be fair we stayed in a cheap resort about 20 years ago. The food was rubbish snd there were no alternatives. I’m sure it would be amazing if you splashed out.

I like places with character and nice food.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Got some amusing photos but really its just a tower surrounded by lots of souvenir stalls.

Thought the same with the Leaning tower of pisa. We visited while on our honeymoon.
Also Centre parcs.

I agree. It was filthy and stank!

"The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott" (Wikipedia)

It's in front of your face the minute you walk out of Waverley. I didn't like it.

Love Glasgow. Felt more at home.

Oh is that what that monument is. Thank you for explaining it to this Edinburger.

Barcelona.

Namechange9625 · 20/05/2023 17:57

Rome.

stardust777 · 20/05/2023 17:57

Really surprised about all the votes for Bali. Some parts were overcrowded but really loved the north coast (stayed in Permuteran), Munduk, Sidemen and the Nusa islands

Agreed on Center Parcs!

Fererr · 20/05/2023 17:58

A lot of Bali is bland but the Ulawatu region is gorgeous.

I wasn’t bowled over by Buenos Aires

Rome is really bad for racism in my experience - and a lot of other places in Italy too. It’s shocking actually, same for my DC, but their experience is mostly from the very demonised ‘extra comunitari’ (non eu citizens that find their way their and stay on illegally, living on the margins of society).

But it’s pretty supremacist and racist against many others too, when it comes down to it, once you understand the language and hear off the record commentary

Blueisthecolour1 · 20/05/2023 18:04

Paris 10 times over. My parents love it and we go often but I’ve never fucking got the allure. Parisians are incredibly rude and it’s actually quite unpleasant going to a cafe to have a coffee. They literally snarl at you and throw a cup and saucer in your general direction and you then run up a debt to pay for it. Loads of pickpockets there. Loads. Dirty streets, aggressive street vendors everywhere do you have to run a really intimidating gauntlet to get anywhere. France is a beautiful amazing country with first-class culture & food - just not in Paris. Anywhere else and you’ll have a blast

I’m also surprised about Bali. Haven’t been there but one of my DC just has.

They did get Bali belly twice while there for 3 weeks even though ok elsewhere in SE Asia and normally have a stomach of iron

SoShallINever · 20/05/2023 18:05

The lost gardens of Heligan. Wanted to visit for so long but found it really boring and disappointing.
Also (controversial) the V and A museum. It was rubbish and practically empty.
I'm not a complete heathen, I love gardens and museums usually, these two were just disappointing.

Lindjam · 20/05/2023 18:05

Osaka Japan

I had really looked forward to visiting Japan but this place was awful, I have never felt more unsafe. Got followed by scary men and it all seemed quite threatening.

I have heard other posters on here saying the same.

bness · 20/05/2023 18:05

Manhattan. Went summer of 22, was so, so dirty, smelled bad, bins overflowing, lacked charm. Dull and grey and the trains were shockingly difficult to navigate.
