Just that really..

OP posts:

Bruges. I honestly don't get the hype. It's cute, but overrun with tourists.

MarkWithaC · 20/05/2023 17:03

Carcassonne. Long time ago and hazy memories, but I don't remember being bowled over by the architecture and atmosphere like I'd imagined I would (having a bit of a thing for slightly mystical places/Knights Templar stuff/castles and towers.
Also remember being REAMED for a cup of crappy hot chocolate in a cafe. TBF we probably picked the most touristy one; I seem to remember it was on a very busy square.

Hong Kong. Grey, dull, 80s-style depressing shopping precincts like Milton Keynes. Shops themselves uninspiring. Whole place felt dirty and boring. Again TBF, I suspect it comes into its own at night and we only really saw it by say (were staying with friends, who kindly cooked dinner every night, so we didn't feel we could treat the place like a hotel and piss off out in the evenings).

I thought Oslo was an armpit too. A bit like Hong Kong in terms of being full of depressing shopping precincts. We were there at midsummer and there was a shite music festival – crowds of people with unironic mullets and stonewashed denim. Shops etc closed on a Sunday, like my UK childhood. Shockingly expensive too.

Venice for sure. It was really smelly, like sewage water everywhere. I wonder if anyone else has ever thought this 🤔

My Nan went in the 90’s (when I was a teen) and said the exact same thing and that it was loppy and expensive. It’s put me right off going.

ladidadidaagain · 20/05/2023 17:03

Ibiza and NY.

I LOVED Venice. You just have to pick the right time and meander away from the crowds. Beautiful.

ScribblingPixie · 20/05/2023 17:04

Cancun. So ugly what's been done to it.

JudgeJ · 20/05/2023 17:04

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, we walked up and down looking for it then realised that it must be where a crowd was, such a small statue.
The White House, again it's very small and we walked passed it a couple of times, even a couple of Americans were saying the same. In the East Room one Texan commented that his den was bigger!
The Sphinx, spoiled by the closeness of shops, a Burger King was facing it when we were there.
So many votes for Vegas but it doesn't pretend to be anything else than it is, brash and tacky! It used to be our arrival point a couple of days to kit ourselves out before the road trip started.

Tourists, of which you were one!

romatheroamer · 20/05/2023 17:05

Haven't read the whole thread but disagree about NYC, Paris etc. I guess some people just don't like cities, I prefer them, tend to get bored in small places.
Overrated: Taormina: Just one long street of people wandering up and down, only one decent restaurant, although view probably affected by very bad weather when we were there.

Interestingly, we went to Majorca a few years ago and I had really low expectations but I thought it was stunning.

This is because Mallorca, (with a ll please) has the best and the worst of the tourism all in the same island.

If you go to Magaluf you will find all the drunken people (mainly from UK) who ny the way are the source of total hatred from the locals. The same people start drinking at the airport or the plane. They are loud a look for a cheap holiday. Then they find just people like them and if sun is not guaranteed they hate it. I will never understand how the Spanish and the local balearic government allows those places to still exist.

Mallorca has also very wealthy tourists who either have their yachts and or villas in it. If you go to the north part of Mallorca to Sóller or Alcúdia or you visit the Promenade in Palma, (the capital) its gorgeous, nice tourists etc.

You basically pay for what you get.

Dwightlovesmichael · 20/05/2023 17:06

Rome.

Was supposed to stay for 5 days, left after 3. I hated every second.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Got some amusing photos but really its just a tower surrounded by lots of souvenir stalls.

also not exactly a lot in pisa.

@Bideshi I think is fair to say that the poster doesn’t know what gothic architecture is.

"The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott" (Wikipedia)

It's in front of your face the minute you walk out of Waverley. I didn't like it.

Love Glasgow. Felt more at home.

Bec198 · 20/05/2023 17:07

Paris.

Also, my husband and I agree we aren’t fussed on going back to the Maldives until after maybe 20 years - if it’s still there! 😔 Beautiful but not much to do/explore obviously.

New York.

I feel I have to stick up for LA though having lived there for nearly 20 years. People say 'I went to LA' but if you literally only went to Los Angeles then no wonder you think it was awful. Greater LA is made up of over 80 different cities each with their own culture and heritage. Burbank is completely different from Santa Monica, Pasadena is nothing like Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes is as much like Bell as Chelsea is like Slough. There is a ton to do in LA from botanical gardens, art museums, theme parks, historical areas, shopping, hiking through mountains, restaurants, beaches, whale watching, boat trips. There has to be something you like there.

Yes! LA is actually great once you get off the beaten path, amazing museums, amazing hiking trails, some great beaches too, so much to do for everyone, of course some dodgy areas too. But yeah if you only ever see Venice beach and Hollywood walk of fame then I can see why people don’t like it.

I have similar experience with other places where I either lived for a bit or visited with locals. New York, Venice, Milan - loved all of those and discovered cool places in each, but they generally get a lot of hate when people just look at the main tourist spots.

EL8888 · 20/05/2023 17:10

LA -all the bad bids aspects of London but none of the good

Sharm el Sheikh -everyone out to rip you off, dirty and l was so ill afterwards

Rome. I had to go there for 4 months for work and lasted 1 month before swapping with a colleague. I found the people on the whole to be really rude and just full of scammers everywhere- it was so tiresome.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. Rome is an absolute shit hole.

I absolutely agree with this. I think many people try to see LA like they would a smaller European city by going downtown and walking around but LA is too spread out for that and as you said there are many smaller cities around. Loved our time at Manhattan beach.

I have to laugh about the Little Mermaid - the clue is in the name :) But the hoards of tourists around it are what make it annoying, not the actual size of the statue in my opinion.

I am very fussy about where I go away and don't go to places if I don't think I will like it, so I am not often disappointed, even if I also not often excited by places because I've been before - but knowing your way round and knowing you will like a place makes for a more relaxing holiday.

So I am rarely disappointed or think somewhere is overrated. There are a few places in the UK that people rave about and I wonder why; but usually when I don't like somewhere it's because there are too many people. I went to Prague and wondered what the all the fuss was about, went back six weeks later when it was much less busy (first time had been a bank holiday) and loved it.

I wasn't massively taken with Florence or Seville, but I wouldn't say they are overrated, just not my sort of place. Oslo is very expensive but I still liked it as a place, it would just be nicer if I were richer :)

Mallorca has some stunning medieval historical towns, beautiful beaches, great places to eat.
But I suspect most tourists who are after cheap all inclusive holidays in those popular drinking spots don’t get to see those.

I really like Rome, but it is a bit stressful having to watch your bags all the time, wear them on your front etc. But that applies to a lot of places (I did get my purse stolen in Madrid about 20 years ago and have been a lot more careful (and stressed) since.

I liked Dublin but I thought Belfast has more going for it and would return to Belfast any time.

Ocresocks · 20/05/2023 17:14

New Zealand!

I travelled all around NZ and yes it's pretty. Weather was meh. We were with some Canadians and they actually went home early as they were so bored 😂

The overwhelming sense of drug addiction in the cities was enough for me to decide not to return.
