Cornwall
Paris
Everywhere I've been in Belgium

Lourdes - was expecting something a bit more uplifting and spiritual, but it was surrounded by tatty stalls selling tiny plastic bottles of water in the shape of Mary.

TeenLifeMum · 20/05/2023 15:53

I hated Paris after a couple of visits but then last year dh took me there again for a specific concert and we absolutely loved it. We stayed in a cute boutique hotel off liberty square and walked miles enjoying coffee shops etc and architecture. No idea what was so different but previous times I’d felt very unsafe.

we were disappointed with Vancouver. It didn’t feel very Canadian. It’s quite multicultural but we found people rude and very un child friendly. Actually saw very few dc. I went for a run along the sea front one evening and it just stunk of weed from all the groups laying on the grass and beach as they’ve legalised cannabis. We drove through the Rockies to Calgary and were much happier. I’m glad we went but won’t go back.

thing47 · 20/05/2023 15:54

LA and Vegas for me.

That may sound like a theme but I enjoy driving up and down the West Coast, just don't stop in LA any more.

I'm a sucker for waterfalls so I love Niagara, but all the tourist stuff around it is tacky. I go there, stare at the water for a couple of hours, climb down behind the Falls, then leave. Don't go to bars or restaurants there, and definitely don't go shopping!

Samphiredragonfly · 20/05/2023 15:54

Cefalonia. Felt too big, longer distances to travel, not as green or picturesque as we expected. Fiskardo lovely but driving there was a nightmare.
We visited Zante a year earlier, dirt cheap last minute. Loved it. Hired a moped, bikes, really got out there and saw the island beyond the tourists. Also did 1 day and night in Athens. Weird because we had such low expectations.

The Grand Canyon - just boring big orange hole.

Me and DH stopped at the edge got out. Stared for a moment. Looked at each other and got back in the car. We weren't sure how long we were supposed to just, stare...

I found the long distances in the USA mindnumbing. Hours of driving past samey same, to get where you're going. Vegas was a spring break dump full of drunk fratters and the casinos were tired and grubby. Rude woman shouting at everyone at the Vegas sign photo stop. Los Angeles was grim. New York was London minus the good stuff and people were noticeably more miserable than west coast. Houston was bland. New Orleans had horrendous, visible poverty that people were just walking and partying all over.

We did enjoy Alcatraz. Quite liked Monument Valley too. Forgot about that. And the seals and Monterey.

The Pyramids of Giza. Just ruined by all the touts. Also right next to the suburbs of Cairo so area surrounding them is pretty built up, was not expecting that!

Comments about NYC been underwhelming! Personally loved NYC!

Were you a tourist there? 😁

Phos · 20/05/2023 15:56

Cape Town

I don’t get why people rave about it, it’s one of the ugliest cities I’ve ever been to and the beaches are crap.

willWillSmithsmith · 20/05/2023 15:56

Sorry @orangebadger wrong post

dinmin · 20/05/2023 15:57

Cuba. Wanted to go forever, then when I did it just felt exhaustingly scammy.

Yes, also didn't enjoy Cuba. The towns were blah, I and travel companion got horrendous food poisoning and the coastal resorts were full of obnoxious spring breakers.

Didn't care for it at all.

luckylavender · 20/05/2023 16:01

So many of these places I love. NY, Vegas, SF, Paris, Turkey, Egypt. Gibraltar was rubbish though & I was bored in Fuerteventura.

Barold · 20/05/2023 16:02

Costa Rica. Didn’t live up to the hype in any regard.

Hedjwitch · 20/05/2023 16:03

Travelling dd hated San Francisco and was shocked by the violence and drug problems.

For me,I didnt warm to Berlin at all.

BillyNoM8s · 20/05/2023 16:04

Where did people hate in Turkey? I really enjoyed Istanbul and want to return for Cappadoccia and Ephesus. No interest in beach resorts.

MummyJ12 · 20/05/2023 16:05

Bali is definitely off my to visit list after reading these posts!
@catshreddedthesofa Oh no! I’m going to Mauritius this week, I hope I like it more than you did….. but to be honest I’m that much in need of a holiday I don’t think I’ll care about the scenery being underwhelming. The photos of the beach where we’re staying look beautiful too. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Bubbles254 · 20/05/2023 16:07

Marrakesh - felt very unwelcoming and nit particularly interesting

Madeira - rubbish food, very little to see

egowise · 20/05/2023 16:07

No idea if I'm just easily pleased, but I've always been really happy everywhere I've been!

Guess I'm just like an excited puppy haha and I've been to many of those mentioned!

Lottapianos · 20/05/2023 16:08

'New York was London minus the good stuff'

I agree! I'm a Londoner though (for the past 20 years) so may well be biased. It was thrilling seeing the Manhattan skyline as we flew in but other than that, I was a bit underwhelmed

RememberNancyDrew · 20/05/2023 16:08

Disney World.

I was going to say the Grand Canyon, but maybe you, like me, looked at it in the worst way.

I stayed on the rim, looked in, and thought it was boring.

In retrospect, if I'd taken a helicopter ride over it, or hiked down to the Colorado River, I think it would have been a vastly different experience.

Spring78Mermaid · 20/05/2023 16:09

I’m laughing there’s several on here I’d agree but never said in real life
Bali - hated it stuck for longest 10d with awful food poisoning
Las Vegas - 4hrs was enough just remeber noise and “ding ding ding” from machines!
Lourdes - yep just tacky luckily we were waiting for a travel connection

the funniest one was taking public bus from Houston to NASA didn’t know when to get off so ended up at the last stop for “employees” so just wandered about scared I’d get picked up and eventually found a walking tour group & joined the back of it getting free entry back into the visitor centre.

I definitely prefer more low key quiet places just took me a few years to work that out.

Spring78Mermaid · 20/05/2023 16:10

Centre parcs we hated it couldn’t wait to leave

dandeliondandy · 20/05/2023 16:11

Dubai - Disneyland in the desert. Much prefer Oman.

silverfullmoon · 20/05/2023 16:12

Where did people hate in Turkey? I really enjoyed Istanbul and want to return

I went to Mamaris and even though the scenery was lovely, the men wouldnt stop hassling us. It was relentless and horrible.
