Budapest. Virtually no outside space and full of backpackers and bars catering to them.

there is a large park, the riverside walks, how much outside space do you want in a city?

More than a dog-strewn bit of grass. ONE park in a city that size is rubbish. Even people who love it say it is not a green city.

I have travelled the world and honestly the most awful place so far is marrakech.
everything…
from the over official stuff at the airport like demanding to see your boarding pass…that’s all that is a boarding pass for your flight at originating airport and not a requirement to enter a country. Lots of people didn’t have it as binned on plane etc.
then you leave the airport and there’s beggars and randoms offering help with luggage and following you etc.
You then have to arrange a taxi deal. No meters or air con (40 degree heat) the cars are old no seatbelts ramshackle.
the airport itself is lovely a new but seemingly a sweat box with no air con and no where to get a cold drink or ice cans all warm etc
the ride to hotel was awful
Roads full of bikes with whole families on, women holding babies no helmets etc
we saw sheep being held over bikes, dead sheep died of shock on side of road, five in a kangoo, three in a fiat uno etc
horses for cart rides looked thin tired old and unkempt, heat exhausted etc.
outside of the walled city it’s utter poverty.
shanty towns and people living behind curtains etc.
the hotel was lovely enough but was a five star all inclusive and clean but restaurant full of flies and bad drainage smells.
No where to walk from hotel as poverty rife and nothing to see etc
Go into the city walled area and nagged by people to buy plastic tatt and fake things.
the souk was mainly fake bags and thin fake football shirts as was the famous market area. People selling the odd rotten fruits on a blanket and more tatt. Scooters and tuk tuks pushing through the supposed pedestrian souk without much care and stall holders leading you the wrong way to get out etc but come look at my genuine LV bags lol
Again restaurants and cafes filled with flies.
A shopping mall billed as big and excellent had only a few shops and one or two cafes
literally cheered as we took off.
it’s cheap for a reason and god knows how it why it’s famous or amazing. It’s a toilet!!
I know it’s in Africa as I’ve had pointed out BUT it’s billed and advertised as so much more, of exotic etc but nope it really is like a dusty shanty town.
However the roads were fantastic…perfectly smooth and that is the only good thing we felt.

Hawaii particularly Waikiki Beach, although Pearl Harbour Memorial was very moving and sobering experience.

adriftabroad · 21/05/2023 19:35

Rio, NYC, Florida, Montreal.

Laalaalaa · 21/05/2023 19:36

Agree with Tunisia
Moscow
Honduras - felt unsafe everywhere we went. We travelled around Central and South America and never felt as on edge as in Honduras

adriftabroad · 21/05/2023 19:37

Loved Marrakech, but you have to speak the language, cover up and be prepared for a "traveller Experience"

LeverageLevel · 21/05/2023 19:38

@battgirlatheart gosh, that sounds grim. And I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco (not Marrakesh necessarily).

I’m finding this thread vaguely addictive!

custardcreme77 · 21/05/2023 19:38

Oh - Malta not my cup of tea! Really disliked it. I couldn’t make my mind up if it was half demolished or half built. The weather didn’t help either. Heavy rain on several days. One of the worst meals at the hotel was Lampuki. It looked like moby dick hanging over the edge of the plate. Shudder.

Cherrysoup · 21/05/2023 19:46

Nebraska. Just so flat and dull. We literally sped through it, bar stopping at K-Mart for a Cornhuskers t-shirt which I love.

newtoallthisshizzle · 21/05/2023 19:46

Venice. All the price signs were in roubles and dollars and if you looked even a bit scruffy staff ignored you in favour of versace-wearing real housewife types. The best bit was taking a boat to burano island and eating a picnic on the dock there. Alone.

Sparkles21 · 21/05/2023 19:49

Capri.. dirty untidy streets and dog crap everywhere!

Capri.. dirty untidy streets and dog crap everywhere!

The best bits of Capri are away from the towns eg the chairlift up the mountain.

Jaxhog · 21/05/2023 19:53

Anywhere where the other people on your trip are Australians. I went to Japan with them and they did nothing but moan about everything, but especially the food - which was absolutely fabulous. Our courier bowed to the majority and we had our last 3 nights (of a 10 days of an all inclusive holiday) in grotty, substandard 'english' restaurants. Totally ruined the holiday

Gloriousgardener11 · 21/05/2023 19:54

Dublin

JaffavsCookie · 21/05/2023 19:54

Venice, smelly, very crowded, very expensive
Centre Parks, butlins for folk who think they are too fancy to go to Butlins

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/05/2023 19:55

NY & LA no.
Morrocco
Tunisia
Bali
Bulgaria
Paris
Albania, beautiful parts,but weird,scary vibe.
Pisa

Love Venice though, especially the islands, just beautiful.

Blondey2023 · 20/05/2023 14:11

Venice for sure. It was really smelly, like sewage water everywhere. I wonder if anyone else has ever thought this 🤔

I loved it and it wasn't smelly when I was there but the mosquitoes loved me and I was covered in angry red lumps. I arrived at night so my first view was the canals all lit up. Magical.

Mirandawrongs · 21/05/2023 19:56

Vegas. A much less classy Blackpool

New York

I'm going to Naples next week - know it's a bit marmite so unsure what to expect. Will report back,
I always fancied Sorrento and Amalfi coast. I joined a FB group and I no longer want to go there 😂

I have two Naples recommendations for you.

Go to the palace of Caserta (by train). You will likely have the gardens and the palace largely to yourself. They are similar to Versailles, not quite so grand, but very interesting (more heavy Neoclassical/Empire than Versailles).

Try to also go by train to Pozzuoli. It is harder to arrange, but loads to see there. There is a vulcanic site, a lake created by an earthquake which is said to be the entrance of the underworld, the shrine of the Cuman sybil...

But Caserta is worth it, believe me.

Fedupofdiets · 20/05/2023 14:38

Lisbon. Pavements were full of dog shit, drug dealers and broken open bin bags - I thought it was. aright dump.

Yep. I hated Lisbon for all of these reasons.

Marrakesh - horrible hassly men, and found it very underwhelming.

Labourlady · 21/05/2023 19:59

Been to Barcelona and Lisbon both out of season and loved the time we had in both places.

Spanielsarepainless · 21/05/2023 19:59

Not very exotic but Land's End. Grotty buildings that don't enhance the landscape at all. Luckily we walked along the coastal path there, as apparently parking is expensive. Coffee was crap. And all in some of the the most beautiful scenery in England.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/05/2023 20:00

Hedjwitch · 21/05/2023 19:28

Sitges is just a train ride away from Barcelona and gorgeous. Stay there and just do a day trip to Barca.

That's what we did, which made me wonder if I had missed the best of Barcelona as I had only spent a day there . I liked Sitges very much .

Motorcycleemptyness · 21/05/2023 20:00

I can understand people saying they aren’t a fan of places, but surely moaning that Las Vegas is tacky is just nonsense. What on earth were you expecting when you booked it? Surely that’s like saying ‘I went to the North Pole and didn’t like it. Too cold’.

I didn’t have a great time in Vienna, although I made the most of it and did a lot of nice stuff. I was travelling by myself as a young woman in my mid 20s and I found the atmosphere REALLY hostile and unfriendly. I wasn’t expecting them to welcome me with open arms or anything but it wouldn’t have killed them to crack a smile occasionally and yet no one did, at all! I got almost CHASED out of a restaurant because I ordered a glass of champagne and didn’t want any food. Tossers.

More than a dog-strewn bit of grass. ONE park in a city that size is rubbish. Even people who love it say it is not a green city.

That's sad, I went in Iron Curtain days and it was lovely. Lots of little parks and playgrounds in residential areas, loved sitting in city park and Margaret Island is wonderful. Well it was, I hope it hasn't all gone.
