I can understand people saying they aren’t a fan of places, but surely moaning that Las Vegas is tacky is just nonsense. What on earth were you expecting when you booked it? Surely that’s like saying ‘I went to the North Pole and didn’t like it. Too cold’.

I didn’t have a great time in Vienna, although I made the most of it and did a lot of nice stuff. I was travelling by myself as a young woman in my mid 20s and I found the atmosphere REALLY hostile and unfriendly. I wasn’t expecting them to welcome me with open arms or anything but it wouldn’t have killed them to crack a smile occasionally and yet no one did, at all! I got almost CHASED out of a restaurant because I ordered a glass of champagne and didn’t want any food. Tossers.

Oh yes, I found Vienna very unwelcoming. I think they just don't need tourists the way some places do and they let it show. The Freud museum is good.

I have two Naples recommendations for you.

Go to the palace of Caserta (by train). You will likely have the gardens and the palace largely to yourself. They are similar to Versailles, not quite so grand, but very interesting (more heavy Neoclassical/Empire than Versailles).

Try to also go by train to Pozzuoli. It is harder to arrange, but loads to see there. There is a vulcanic site, a lake created by an earthquake which is said to be the entrance of the underworld, the shrine of the Cuman sybil...

But Caserta is worth it, believe me.

Thanks for this! I am not sure we will have time this trip. We will be on Ischia for a week and Naples for 3 nights. I already booked Herculaneum one day and the Galleria Borbonica and an evening fee walking tour. And Friday 2nd is a BH so expecting everywhere to be busy and transport affected etc. Will bear in mind for the future certainly.

Malta! Crazy drivers, beaches not as great as other Mediterranean islands, food really blah, not much to do other than sightseeing and the beach. Though we loved Gozo.

oh and Hong Kong! What an overcrowded, dirty nightmare of a place full of rude people and rubbish strewn everywhere! Much prefer Singapore.

I loved Venice and thought it was magical 😍

I love it too. Especially out of season when there are few tourists and there's a slightly gloomy, sinister vibe. In a good way!

I recently worked with a young woman from Vienna and she said she loves living in Britain because everyone is so friendly and helpful! She said she loves how people thank bus drivers because it would never occur to anyone to do that in Austria. It would be considered strange. So seems it's not just tourists who get rude treatment there.

America except New Orleans , San Francisco ( I’m 50/50 )
Visited the following
New York, San Fran, Chicago, New Orleans, Texas, Oklahoma, San Diego, Cincinnati, Salem, Seattle, Dallas, etc
Etc
Really underwhelming.
Bars and stuff have a novelty factor in the south with penny beer and two stepping and the stomp dancing in Oklahoma was amazing but too sad the way the indigenous American Indians are treated.

Art Galleries and Architecture not amazing. Driving in a straight line over long distances Thelma and Louise style was fun but wears thin quickly.

Prefer a country with more culture.

Fair about Vegas! I went for the kids and because we wanted to see the Grand Canyon. Which was worth it.

WimbyAce · 21/05/2023 20:14

Florida, Disney world, just didn't find it magical at all. I was very underwhelmed.

Appledrop · 21/05/2023 20:15

Oh my, those of you who mention Bali can you tell me where in Bali did you visit and did not like? We were looking to book for Ubud.....some posts cause me to wonder whether to bother 😂

Well said! There are people moaning about places because of the weather (and, if they are from the UK, isn't that a bit ironic?). I've never been to most of these places, and yet I imagine I would have a better idea of what to expect than many on this thread. Nebraska is flat and dull - what did you expect it to be?? So many of you seem to think the people who live in these places should be spending their time entertaining you - what do you do for anyone visiting your home town? Go travelling with an open mind, find things to do, don't just go somewhere and expect to be dazzled, soak up the atmosphere.

Really, reading through these threads tells me that travel is wasted on Brits.

Wowjustwow99 · 21/05/2023 20:29

Rome

Inastatus · 21/05/2023 20:32

We loved Bali but travelled there with my nephew who knew the country well. Majorca is one of the only places we have returned to multiple times, it’s a beautiful island, especially the north coast. The only place I can think of that I didn’t like is the Black Forest - I found it dark and gloomy and it gave me a weird feeling but I was an angst ridden teen at the time so that might have had something to do with it!

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 21/05/2023 20:33

New York, expensive, everything closed early and full of mentally ill homeless people, if that's how the Americans care for their sick, it does not say good things about their society. Ibiza was pretty crap, terrible, overheated clubs with a lot of predatory guys, and too many drunk Brits.

storminamooncup · 21/05/2023 20:33

Paris - just stick the eiffel tower in the middle of glasgow govan and you get the idea.

Barcelona - not much to see.

Greece - really dirty and smelly and the toilet paper in the bin thing - boak.

Dubrovnik - meh

I love Italy though

CharlotteRumpling · 21/05/2023 20:35

Am surprised by dirty and smelly Greece. Its my favourite country in the world.

Majorca

Hideous
& rained in August
total waste of money

Yep me too. The beach wasn't good and the sea rough as well as bad weather. Its put me off Spain completely.

midsomermurderess · 21/05/2023 20:38

Re Bali, I didn't like Ubud. It's a rather dank place with a staggering number of t-shirt shops, lots of yoga 'dollies', and that horrible bit with all the grabby monkeys. I found it a bit depressing. I quite liked east Bali, stayed in Candidasa.

Lollygaggle · 21/05/2023 20:38

I am one of those who loathed Las Vegas. Before we went we thought we would do as we have at eg casino in Monte Carlo etc and change a nominal amount of money just to say we had gambled there.
However once we got there the sight of people who obviously did not have a lot of money obsessively pulling the arms of the machines, not even stopping to see if they had won and seemingly getting no enjoyment was so dispiriting we just wanted to get out of the casino.
Add to that the grotesque consumption of food at all you can eat buffets (don't get me wrong I like to get my snout in the trough as much as anyone) which , honestly just made you want to have a salad with no dressing.
The average American spent $2000 gambling a visit , the average Brit $200. More than anywhere else I've ever been I felt the sadness and emptiness of the experience.

Bondi Beach. Looked like Eastbourne or Skegness 😳

I saw it on TV recently and it was not how I expected it to be at all. I thought it would have been like paradise but it was so urban and soulless. Like a man made beach with builder’s sand.

Appledrop · 21/05/2023 20:49

Yes i've heard about the monkey sanctuary, well read about it including the reviews, seems like a lot of visitors get bitten and end up having to have three rabies injections over a three week or so period. Hubby and I had already agreed that place wouldn't be on the list of to-do's. We were planning on spending a week there and then another week in Nusa Dua?

Hedjwitch · 21/05/2023 20:50

Margaret Island in Budapest is lovely.

TrustPenguins · 21/05/2023 20:50

Center Parcs (Sherwood Forest)

HamstersAreMyLife · 21/05/2023 20:50

I'm being unfair to majorca perhaps, I also disliked Barcelona a lot but loved Seville and Cadiz as well as Ibiza so it hasnt really put me off.

Also hated Tunisia and wouldn't go back there. Didn't feel unsafe at all just not nice.
