OP posts:

Marrakesh - The souk specifically. It's a dire tourist trap.

Venice. John Cleese was right all those years ago…. more fucking gondolas.

I have never met anyone else who saw that short film "fucking gondolas!". I said it all the time in Venice, but nobody knew what i was on about.

Loved Venice. Went round looking for the places featured in The Thief Lord.

Really interesting read here!
It's often difficult to reconcile the fact that when you're on holiday in a foreign place with high expectations, the locals there are often living in poverty and you are their only source of income. Hence: Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt etc.
If you don't understand that Africa is a third world country and all that entails, go somewhere else!

I don't think you're giving people enough credit. Africa is also a continent, not a country. To say the entire continent is a third world country is staggering. I think most people do understand that they are likely to be seen as rich tourists and a source of income - in many places you may visit in the world. I certainly did. But that doesn't mean that I enjoy being grabbed, shouted at and generally made to feel unsafe.

I guess that's one of the themes of this thread - you can expect and acknowledge cultural differences wherever you go, but some things can really put you off returning to a place. For example, I've been to other countries with high levels of poverty and was never made to feel like I did in Tunisia.

SweetcornFritter · 20/05/2023 18:10

I love this thread - I had been feeling hard done by as I haven’t been on a holiday since before the pandemic but having read all your comments I don’t think I’ll bother now. Everywhere is shit. Good to know!

Tangled123 · 20/05/2023 18:10

I think some posters are confusing ‘overrated’ for ‘boring’. Auckland, for example, isn’t overrated because everyone who has ever been will tell you how crap it is. The South Island is amazing overall but I personally found Milford Sound a bit overrated.

Would also agree with Rome and Dublin.

silverfullmoon · 20/05/2023 18:10

In Japan, there is a recognised psychological condition called "Paris syndrome" which is: "a psychological condition experienced almost exclusively by Japanese tourists who are disappointed when the city of lights does not live up to their romantic expectations". Apparently, they have designated therapy for it 😆

Whatisityoucantface · 20/05/2023 18:11

Dubai - seems to only exist for good social media photos
Naples - v atmospheric but feels dangerous. Roughest train station I’ve been to
Brisbane - small and boring and Cairns is even worse. There are beautiful spots in Queensland but the towns and cities have nothing going on!

I love NYC. I am definitely a city girl though.

Sorryyoufeelthatwayy · 20/05/2023 18:11

Amsterdam, racist dump with the rudest customer service people ever.

JamSandle · 20/05/2023 18:11

Also LA, Paris and San Francisco.

Added to list: Marrakech.

Sorryyoufeelthatwayy · 20/05/2023 18:12

Palmero filthy, stinking and sketchy. Worst place in Sicily.

Lachimolala · 20/05/2023 18:14

Barcelona, the place itself was lovely. I’ve been twice for long weekends. The people however were just horrific, refused to serve my then parter (not white) generally very racist, rude and aggressive.

Turkey surprised me, I thought I’d hate it but it was wonderful. I would definitely go back.

Einszwei · 20/05/2023 18:16

Tokyo. I really don't understand why it is the dream destination for so many (the food was the only thing I enjoyed.

Ocresocks · 20/05/2023 18:17

Oooh I'm just here to add that Auckland was the most racist place I had ever been. 😞

puttingontheritz · 20/05/2023 18:17

Marrakesh. I hated it. Totally boring, nothing to do and what made it all worse I felt like we were hassled all the time and I had made a real effort to dress respectably and I speak fluent French.

Hedjwitch · 20/05/2023 18:18

Edinburgh used to be a beautiful place ( I live near by) but has become run down, potholed and dirty. Its such a shame. Dont go during the Festival; city cant cope with the numbers so everywhere crowded, bins overflowing, prices hiked to insane levels.

Glasgow is a dreary dump.

Places we have liked are Krakow( favourite),Barcelona, Sitges and Budapest.

Mooshamoo · 20/05/2023 18:18

LA. Bali. New York.

WitheringTights000 · 20/05/2023 18:18

@DemonicCaveMaggot - what is LA like in July weather wise? Is it stiflingly warm? I am meant to go in either July or October, I have been told july is about 30 Celsius but I think I was told that not to put me off ( i hate extreme heat) ....what's weather like in October?

I feel like online weather app always gets it wrong.

Thanks in advance lol

Tiddlywinkly · 20/05/2023 18:20

What's wrong with Manchester?

Naples. It was grey, ugly and felt unsafe. However, a must if you want to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum which are well worth it.

TheaBrandt · 20/05/2023 18:21

So baffled by people saying Paris! It’s so beautiful and fun we’ve just got back from 4th trip as a family at teens request. What are you doing there that makes you dislike it?

Venice is stunning we went summer 2020 and it was practically empty. Unforgettable.

Utterly agree about Cairo and the Pyramids though. Utter shithole.

puttingontheritz · 20/05/2023 18:21

Also, Liverpool. It's not as great as it thinks it is, by a long stretch.

SpangleSparkle · 20/05/2023 18:22

St Lucia was awful.

Goshdarnitgoofy · 20/05/2023 18:22

gogohmm · 20/05/2023 16:36

I like Ibiza but Hawaii, vegas, Orlando- all overrated. Don't know why ordinary people are scrimping and saving for years to go to Disney in Florida, it's ok but so busy, so humid, and so very very expensive, you barely get on any rides due to queues and even the signing the autograph book which was simple 20 years ago is now hours long queues

Am in WDW as I write this and haven’t waited hours in any queues for characters and most rides are 10-20 mins. You just have to be strategic about the large ones.

WDW is about so much more than rides!

Elphame · 20/05/2023 18:23

Toss up between Prague and San Francisco. Actually I think San Francisco was the worse of the two.

Budikka · 20/05/2023 18:24

I agree with most of the posters on here, so I am a bit sad about NYC, as I have always wanted to visit! I am not into SATC, but I always read about the 1970s punk scene, Andy Warhol, films like "Smithereens". I have always thought I would love to see the places I have heard about in songs, like Queens, Rockaway Beach, Coney Island, the skyscrapers, etc. Is it all gone?

Mirabai · 20/05/2023 18:30

My aunt always used to say: “There’s always someone moaning about the pyramids.”
