Just that really..

For those that said Vegas, out of interest, why did you hate it?

I’ve been three times and have loved it each time. Lots to do, and incredible weather has helped too I think.

I always recommend it to people and say you’d be surprised, it’s not what you think it’ll be like. But what are other’s experiences if they aren’t good?

lampformyfeet · 20/05/2023 18:34

Disneyland.
Even the children said it was “too plastic”.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 20/05/2023 18:35

I’ve been to most of the places mentioned above, and few underwhelmed me. I might not go back but I was rarely disappointed with a short visit to any of them. variety is the spice of life.

The one that disappointed me most was Australia. Sounds outrageously unfair but hear me out, I “liked” Melbourne and I “liked” Sydney in the same way I like Rome or Tuscany but the cost, time and effort to get there and back and the distance between every place worth visiting was simply not worth it. If Australia was as close as Europe, with its best parts as near to each other as Paris or Amsterdam is to the UK and each other I may have been more enthusiastic, but for me, it was just too hard work for too little reward.

That said, seeing real kangaroos in the wild was cute and a little bit exciting 🥰

New Orleans, the poverty outside the French Quarter was terrible and really put me off. It also felt quite dangerous.
I did like Louisiana though. There was still terrible poverty, shocking for such a wealthy country. But it was also beautiful.

Agree!

but also perplexing that people are surprised by something when they know exactly what it is before they go

a tower that leans - well yes - that’s what it is!

the Grand Canyon was just a “hole in the ground”…..again…… what part of that was surprising??

a little bit of research before you may save these people wasted time and money!

I agree! Brings to mind Basil Fawlty and the guest who complained about the view:
That's Torquay madam.
Well it's not good enough.
May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps?

No idea if I'm just easily pleased, but I've always been really happy everywhere I've been!

Guess I'm just like an excited puppy haha and I've been to many of those mentioned!

I am with you! I find it amazing that people can’t find anything to enjoy in cities like Paris, NY, Barcelona. Also Bali, Majorca, Ibiza - there are parts that are terribly touristy but other areas are stunningly beautiful with wonderful beaches, restaurants, coffee shops. I think if you look for beauty you find it everywhere but if you look for ugliness you also find that everywhere

I just can’t understand the hatred for Pisa; the Campo Santo is one of the most beautiful and interesting collections of sacred buildings in Italy . It has some world class museums and art, and a good food market.

oh well…..

Seeingadistance · 20/05/2023 18:39

Saltcoats.
Naples.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 20/05/2023 18:40

JT12 Its not that I disliked New York it was just over-hyped imo.

I don't agree with all the hatred for Los Angeles. I would have happily lived there permanently (especially Sierra Madre) but lots of people didn't find it to their taste.

Lovely botanical gardens too.

DappledThings · 20/05/2023 18:41

Seville has surprised me on here. I thought it was wonderful. We only had 3 days and could have stayed a week. So many beautiful gardens and buildings. And some amazing food in some really nice bars.

Rightnowstraightaway · 20/05/2023 18:42

I really enjoyed some of these places! I love New York and Paris for example, and had a great time at the Pyramids.

I hated Dubai. Nothing but hotels, malls and building sites to me. But I expected that, so I suppose I can't say it was overrated even though I don't understand why people like it.

Lands End was disappointing as a pp mentioned.

I found Disney Paris overrated tbh. But in general I'd say places met my expectations, whether good or bad.

LunaNorth · 20/05/2023 18:42

Sorrento. The old town was ok, but the rest of it was dirty, traffic-choked, and the ‘beach’ was pretty inaccessible.

Babytwodue · 20/05/2023 18:43

San Francisco - scruffy in my opinion and couldn’t see the bloody bridge for the fog 🙄

frockhopper · 20/05/2023 18:44

Miami Beach. Dirty, crowded, impossible to find parking (and even if you did, it was $$$) and if you wanted a seat and parasol, even more $$$. So many more interesting things to see in and around Miami and much better beaches almost everywhere.

TheCrystalPalace · 20/05/2023 18:45

Agree with others about New York.

Cantstandbullshitanymore · 20/05/2023 18:46

Hollywood was a shocker to me. Very dangerous - there was even an armed guard at Burger King.

Paris - dirty, over priced and the locals were miserable.

Disneyland Paris - really, really run down in the early 2000's.

TGI's and Hardrock Cafe's all seem to look a bit run down these days.

Chicago Airport - bizarrely small Terminal for International flights. Only ONE proper restaurant where you could get a beer and a burger, and it was tiny, hence the enormous queue to get in. If you didn't eat there, you were stuck with fast food. Only a handful of shops as well. It's probably the worst airport I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot!

What terminal did you fly out of? Ohare is a very big airport top 5 busiest in the world in terms of passenger numbers and there’s a ton of restaurants around.

In comparison theres 33 restaurants across all Heathrow terminals

Las Vegas, absolute shite sorry.

Agree with others about New York.

I think its easy to feel underwhelmed by NY and LA because so much of film and TV is based there that it builds up quite a grand image in your mind that it can't really live up to.

Emptiedout · 20/05/2023 18:50

powerrangers · 20/05/2023 14:31

They don't have a Four Seasons or Oberoi in magaluf I don't think....
Bali like many places, it depends where.

This. I was REALLY nervous about going to Bali (booked on a whim 🙄) as I hate very touristy areas but then researched tons, and went to areas well away from the Magaluf. We loved it. It really does depend where you go. Some parts were quiet and stunning.

Movinghouseatlast · 20/05/2023 18:52

New York. Dirty, noisy, smelt of chicken. Of everything there The Highline was absolutely the most overrated thing.

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 20/05/2023 18:55

HadleyVaughn · 20/05/2023 18:07

Marrakesh - The souk specifically. It's a dire tourist trap.

I found it really OTT that you can be dressed respecting the culture, with a husband to your side and a baby in your arms and the bloody sellers are touching you all over in a disrespectful way… and I say that as someone from a very hug/touch expressive culture.

Never again.

Emptiedout · 20/05/2023 18:56

Morocco was not great. Loved Marrakesh and Essaouira but got totally ripped off on trip to desert and it really soured it for us. First holiday for DH and I...and the worst

RippleEffects · 20/05/2023 18:57

Butlins Minehead (albeit was nearly a decade ago so may have changed, but the thought of it still gives me chills). Felt like a prison camp. The deluxe lodge or what ever it was called, came with broken window in childrens room, broken bed, light not working, general grime. The better food package came with a restaurant that had broken unwiped high chairs (with no towels or cleaning spray for customers to do it them selves, food served slopped on top of each other because of a vomiting outbreak could self serve and they didn't have good serving utencils. Had to go off site to buy food because standard was so poor and autistic eldest couldn't cope with the sloppy piles they served no matter how nicely I asked to keep bits seperate. Even thought we'd paid a lot, just about everything cost extra. You could only swim in the lovely pools for a very short window or they were used for pay extra activities.

Aw I loved the pyramids when we went! It was Ramadan and just after the revolution so noone could really be bothered trying to sell us anything. The lights in the pyramid were broken apparently but we were allowed in anyway and it was so atmospheric turning our torches off in the main chamber and being in total darkness.

Bit niche but Cameron Highlands. Just traffic, traffic and more traffic interspersed with sad tourist attractions.

Oh, the top of Snowdon. The walk up and down was lovely but the summit itself was such a dump. You couldn't even get any water from the vending machines!

I loved the Cameron Highlands - probably my fave bit of Malaysia - although it was 25 years ago - loved eating in the tiny cafes up really high - it was a spectacular place!
