This is out of time because it happened this morning, but one super thing was Antonio Pappano conducting while Pretty Yende sang, in that long time when people were drifting in.

I hope Harry felt comfortable out of the limelight and between Jack Brooksbank and Princess Alexandra.

I wouldn't mind a TV programme about the Royal School of Needlework, and a close look at Queen Camilla's dress. (No, I don't think they're lackeys who are forced to make clothes for the RF at the tax-payers' expense.)

I must look out for the Patrick Grant programme about Coronation tailoring mentioned a few times this morning. In the mean time, you reminded me of this cartoon which I saw years ago and have just found again thanks to the wonder of Google.

Why do people keep going on about Camilla being a fag ash Lil? I thought she gave up years ago.

To be fair, my DD is 16 and the most she knows about Camilla is watching The Windsors.

Sir Trevor Mcdonald looking and sounding great at the grand age of 83!

Who is the very beautiful Asian BBC presenter in the mustard outfit?

Yes she’s lovely. Would be a great replacement for Naga Munchetty who is a right misery guts.

Anyone else wish it was Princess Anne getting crowned?

Nope

Agreed. Like a tattle tale head girl type.

I quite like Naga because she's a right misery guts.

Fair enough, the drama around her is quite entertaining 😂

Obscure campanology fact: there were eight bells rung at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, today there were ten. The extra two were restored In the 1970s.

SoTedious · 06/05/2023 14:57

What name do you use for the Eiffel Tower, France,Spain etc?

If I was an organisation funded by the people of Spain and they decided they wanted Spain to be known as Espana, I would call it Espana, especially if there were political and cultural sensitivities about the historical relationship and balance of power.

Sudeko · 06/05/2023 14:57

Off for some party food and a Tampon Hunt in the palace gardens, I expect!

KrasiTime · 06/05/2023 14:57

Thank you everyone!

I cracked open the 🍾- well any excuse. Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for me & dh. Well I had the 🍾 as I reminded himself he’s on antibiotics. Think I’ll sleep for rest of the day!

It's a ridiculous thing to get annoyed about.

I'm not annoyed about Clare Balding getting it wrong (although it's pretty poor of the BBC given that they have several hundred people working at BBC Cymru Wales who could have told her how to say it, not to mention Huw Edwards).

I did find it a bit annoying when a PP dismissed it - there is obviously a political/cultural implication of not bothering to use the preferred Welsh name. Not a great look for the national broadcaster covering a national event.

Another possibility is that the notes to accompany the procession etc were in preparation a while ago, before the name change, and with everything else going on, no-one thought to go back to page 265 of the notes to update them.

No

Yes definitely!

DH asked if he was ill when he saw it fleetingly on the tv. DH has little interest in the RF and barely recognised him even though a great big crown was being plonked on his head!

Agree. I think it is correct that it's official name has been changed to reflect the country it is in, however it does not mean those that do not speak the language are compelled to use it much like we don't expect the French to refer to us as England.

SoTedious · 06/05/2023 15:02

Yes I'm sure this is what happened (no one at the BBC would deliberately get something like that wrong). My previous post was in response to a PP's idea that it's fine for English speakers to use the English name. Of course that's fine, but in BBC terms it was a mistake.

Think Kirsty Young should have her colours done, I don't think that green does her any favours though I like the dress.

Im reading Black and British at the moment, v interesting.

She looks like she hasn't a lick of makeup on either, so the hair colour makes her look really washed out...

Why not just call it espana now given that’s how the Spanish pronounce it?

I imagine you say España, Italia, Polska etc. you should probably advise the Spanish, Italian and Polish not to call England Inglaterra, Inghilterra, Anglia etc.

Hoping you call Hungary Magyarország then? I thought not. And how are you saying Budapest? (Clue - it’s not Bewdapest).

SoTedious · 06/05/2023 15:07

Hopefully you can see the difference between whether I call Spain Espana when the Spanish have not expressed such a preference, and the BBC broadcasting the English version of a name that has been officially changed to Welsh. (Given that the political sensitivities of the relationship between England and Wales are a bit different to the relationship between me and Spain.)

watcherintherye · 06/05/2023 15:08

That was aimed at spottybug btw!

Thanks for the lovely thread and your company this morning everyone.
Shame there are always a few who can't 'read the room' and try to derail lovely threads rather than going off and starting their own, but lovely (3) thread(s) on the whole. Cheers Wine

AutumnCrow · 06/05/2023 15:12

And Greta Thunberg isn't pronounced 'Gretta Tun-berg'.

And that's her actual name going down the pronunciation plughole of doom.
