Finding laughter - where do you find it? Recommend something really funny please

I recently had some training, and it was mentioned that everyone should find laughter every day. It's important for our wellbeing and resilience.

I understand this, and remember watching comedy years ago and crying with laughter, but I just don't seem to any more.

I'm drawn to serious/thriller type reading and watching. Nothing cheery.

Can you recommend a funny/lighthearted/amusing/uplifting book, film, series, podcast....

TED LASSO. It's life changing i promise you. Piper Belly laughter and some very poignant moments.

DragonbornMum · 29/04/2023 10:01

It depends on your sense of humour, but I always found The IT Crowd to be the funniest sitcom I have ever encountered. Parks and Rec is also pretty good, but it takes a few seasons to get going. Arrested Development is in the same vein as these

PeskyRooks · 29/04/2023 10:11

You should take a look at some of the threads on Mumsnet Classics. The last one that had me doubled up crying with laughter was 'Things that are supposed to be romantic but bloody aren't'
Sorry don't know how to do the link thing!

Peter Kay and Micky Flanagan always make me laugh. Loads of clips on YouTube that I look at when I need a pick me up.

Also the out takes of comedy shows like Car Share, Derek, The Royle family. Actors unable to get their lines out for laughing is brilliant.

Hope you find something. I also want to watch Ted Lasso but can't afford anymore subscriptions at the moment.

BestIsWest · 29/04/2023 10:51

Ted Lasso is worth the Apple subscription even if you binge it and cancel.

Bill Bryson always makes me laugh - Down Under especially.

purpleme12 · 29/04/2023 10:52

Well for me it's still the oldies.
Vicar of Dibley
Scrubs.
Friends.
The IT Crowd.
Keeping Up Appearances

But like PP said up thread, everyone's sense of humour when it comes to these things is so vastly different

MeinKraft · 29/04/2023 10:54

Have I got news for you still makes me laugh out loud

catinthesunshine · 29/04/2023 10:55

Taskmaster on All4.

crumpet · 29/04/2023 10:58

Also look to find humour in every day life. I love our village WhatsApp group for example - whether it’s the chap who always likes to tell us it’s warm outside and not to forget suncream, or bust ups about whether we do/don’t need an awning for a village fete - I love the idiosyncrasies of human nature. Always cheers me up. As much as appreciating the efforts people go to to arrange nice events for the village.

CaveMum · 29/04/2023 10:59

Another vote for Taskmaster!

Podcast-wise Parenting Hell never fails to make me laugh, and if you do like Taskmaster there is an accompanying podcast that comes out once a week.

There are plenty of comedy shows on Radio 4/Radio 4 Extra, though it depends what floats your boat. I love Cabin Pressure, Old Harry’s Game, Revolting People, Now You’re Asking, Just A Minute, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, Evil Genius. The Infinite Monkey Cage isn’t a comedy per se but they usually have a comedian on which lends the laughs!

I also love old comedy shows too (I’m not old enough to have heard them first time round, my dad introduced me to them in the 90s), so stuff like The Goon Show, The Navy Lark, Round The Horne and I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again never fail to make me laugh.

FlamingoCroquet · 29/04/2023 11:06

If you want a proper laugh out loud, check out Modern Family. I don't usually enjoy sitcoms, but this one has the best one-liners and long-running jokes, as well as characters that you become really attached to. It's on various services, now free on All 4.

RightOnTheEdge · 29/04/2023 11:06

I also recommend Ted Lasso. I can't afford apple tv either but I got a free trial.
Maybe wait until this last season finishes and get a free trial and binge them all.

I also recommend trying The Stranger Times series of books by C.K McDonnell especially on audible because the narrator is excellent.
They were not my kind of books at all but I tried them because like you I was in need of a laugh so gave them a chance. I regularly have to turn a snort of laughter into a cough if I'm listening in public Grin

Puffalicious · 29/04/2023 11:08

MammyBanter on FB is fabulous, as are her books.

Classics for me are clips of Billy Comnolly, Kevin Bridges, Bill Bailey, Tim Minchin and Victoria Wood- but it depends who floats your boat.

Totally niche, but old TOTP (BBC2) are brilliant for nostalgia, singing along, laughing at the trends, watching the hilarious audience dancing/ fashions. Always makes both of us laugh so hard.

rainbowhairchalk · 29/04/2023 11:11

Not everyone's cup of tea but we were crying laughing at Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime if you've got it

littleburn · 29/04/2023 11:21

Catastrophe and Father Ted.

LindyHopathon · 29/04/2023 11:22

Mrs Brown's Boys.

Was about to suggest exactly the same

TooRightM8 · 29/04/2023 11:30

Would I lie to you is my go to programme for a gut laugh, particularly if Bob Mortimer is on

I agree

Absolute genius

tothesea · 29/04/2023 11:36

Seconding Modern Family and adding Brooklyn 99..both always make me hoot with laughter. Especially Captain Raymond Holt, the actor has an amazing sense of comic timing. ‘Velvet Thunderrrrrr’ 😂

Yes anything with Bob Mortimer is always worth a watch.

His series of Taskmaster was brilliant.
His 'Train Guy' is comedy genius.
Gone Fishing is also great, not really a comedy but a really smiley feel good show with some laughs.

SquirrelSoShiny · 29/04/2023 12:48

I like Brooklyn 99, Scrubs and New Girl type shows for a quick laughter hit. Short episodes with great cast and script. Also a fan of Modern Family.

Justathrowawaycomment · 29/04/2023 12:50

The US Office, seasons 1-4.

CurlewKate · 29/04/2023 12:59

James Acaster. Stewart Goldsmith. Catherine Bohart and Jen Brister are my current favourite comedians. BlackAdder and The Thick of it always make me laugh, however many times I rewatch.
