Finding laughter - where do you find it? Recommend something really funny please

I recently had some training, and it was mentioned that everyone should find laughter every day. It's important for our wellbeing and resilience.

I understand this, and remember watching comedy years ago and crying with laughter, but I just don't seem to any more.

I'm drawn to serious/thriller type reading and watching. Nothing cheery.

Can you recommend a funny/lighthearted/amusing/uplifting book, film, series, podcast....

Extraordinary was a great series for laugh out loud moments. If you need a quick pick me up, watch small clips of this is spinal tap on youtube. No need to watch the full film.

CurlewKate · 29/04/2023 13:04

Would I Lie To You is reliably funny. And, much to my surprise, because I'm on a completely different side of the political fence, Geoff Norcott make me laugh. Oh, and if you listen to podcasts, last week's Off Menu with Alex Jones was sooooo funny!

Do you have an iPhone or IPad? I got a free Apple TV subscription with mine for a year.

i have just spent the last hour guffawing at Gogglebox!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:10

Gavin and Stacey makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it.

re books - I loved the Diary of a Provincial Lady and Terry Pratchett is amazing

Taskmaster on All4.

This!! I was actually crying with laughter at the last episode and that doesn't happen very often! And there's a very funny podcast to go with it 😊

FlemCandango · 29/04/2023 13:33

I was watching Catastrophe last night on Netflix if you have that - it was really funny I laughed out loud a lot and after a tough week I needed that!

BigglyBee · 29/04/2023 13:40

I have ducks, precisely because they make me laugh out loud every day. The eggs are just a bonus, really. Runner ducks are especially comical. Having to go outside to feed them/clean out their house etc also really helps, since when my mental health is poor I can tend to just stay indoors and that makes it worse.

Second Colin from Accounts. First episode was funny and it just gets better. On BBC catch up

Vitriolinsanity · 29/04/2023 13:52

I came on to say please read Bill Bryson Down Under. I read it by a pool on holiday and had tears rolling down my face and whole body cracking up.

LauderSyme · 29/04/2023 13:52

I really enjoyed Ghosts on BBC iplayer. Plus 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Sarah Millican and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert clips on Youtube.

I upvote Mumsnet Classics!

I curated a board on Pinterest. For a while every time I found something online that made me laugh out loud, I pinned it. Now I can go to that board whenever I need a giggle and it has never failed me yet!

Monkey44 · 29/04/2023 13:53

If you have Audible, there are some good podcasts available. I've recently found the French & Saunders Titting about podcasts and also Alan Carr's Life's a beach. Both have me laughing out loud, so would be worth a listen of your type of thing.

LouLou198 · 29/04/2023 13:56

Anything with Peter Kay in it, especially car share. Also Friday night dinner and father Ted.

GoodChat · 29/04/2023 13:56

I'm watching a programme could Working Moms on Netflix at the moment which has some laugh out loud moments

PeppermintPatty10 · 29/04/2023 14:03

I second Bill Bryson to read, and Modern Family to watch! Both have made me cry laughing!

NurseCranesRolodex · 29/04/2023 14:03

Motherland rewatch on BBC iPlayer.

Inthebathagain · 29/04/2023 14:10

How has the thread got this far and no one has mentioned My Dad Wrote a Porno podcast?

It is the funniest thing I have experienced in years. I listen to it on my walks and there are times I have to stop walking, as I'm literally doubled up with laughter.

Free on Spotify.

Another vote too for Ted Lasso on a free trial. Also Barry on Sky/Now.

110APiccadilly · 29/04/2023 14:10

Any radio programme by John Finnemore. Some episodes of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme are up on BBC Sounds so you could try those for free and see whether you like him. My only caveat is that I wouldn't start with series 9.

Bbq1 · 29/04/2023 14:14

The Big Bang Theory, US Office and Parks and Rec - we cry laughing watching these over.

ChristmasFluff · 29/04/2023 14:18

I always recommend the Wimbledon Poisoner book by Nigel Williams as a real laugh out loud book.

And it has that same comforting feeling as Miranda and Father Ted - both great comedy series.

All of those have moments I recall sometimes and have me laughing even at the memory.

and another vote for Friday Night Dinner - the horrible grandma especially.

But the ultimate for me:

Monty Python - Four Yorkshiremen

The Four Yorkshiremen skit from Live at Hollywood BowlI do not own any of this material it's all courtesy of Monty Python at www.youtube.com/MontyPython .I o...

Inthebathagain · 29/04/2023 14:19

Oh, and Schitts Creek.

Brilliantly acted, hilarious writing and pant wettingly played out.

Bbq1 · 29/04/2023 14:23

Also WILTY and HIGNFY. So funny especially Bob M as others have said. I'd also recommend the first 2 or 3 series of Ghosts but it goes flat later on it feels like all the jokes have been exhausted . Very funny in the early days though.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 29/04/2023 14:34

I am very difficult to please when it comes to funny. However, agree with pps who said Taskmaster, consistently funny and often hilarious. I used to love Never mind the buzzcocks, but that was in the Mark Lamarr days and has become stupid rather than funny and I really do not like stupid.

vestanesta · 29/04/2023 14:45

Most have mine have been mentioned but Ted Lasso, Ghosts and Schitts Creek are both funny and lovely at the same time. I like things like The Thick of It a lot as well but there is an edge to them.

Our Flag means death is similar actually and very sweet.

I second John Finemore/Cabin Pressure. Cummerbins Treasure podcast is basically all of Cabin Pressure. My Dad Wrote a Porno literally made me laugh til I hurt but mostly at the start (got a bit repetitive towards the end).

Also instagram. The stupid animal accounts like ones about evil cats or insane dogs. I'm not much of a pet animal person but those kind of accounts which are like 20 seconds of silliness cheer me up. Dd sent me one of a hedgehog farting in the dark which sounds so deeply unfunny (am not a toilet humour person) but the timing is just bafflingly perfect.
