I'm Borough too. Weird, isn't it!?

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 16:25

Dover is Nathalie Elphicke. Such a shame.

Professor Sir John Curtice on

The BBC is projecting that if all of Britain had the chance to vote in local elections today - and had behaved in the same way as those who did - the share of the vote for each party would be as follows:

  • Conservative - 26%
  • Labour - 35%
  • Liberal Democrats - 20%
  • Others - 19%
The nine-point lead that Labour is projected to have over the Conservatives is the largest lead that the Labour Party have recorded on our measure since losing power in 2010. Although Labour have met the minimum threshold they set themselves, the party will be disappointed that it has not been any more successful this year than last.

As I understand things a nine point lead in the way the BBC do these things, if it were a general election would be a really quite substantial Labour majority.

@Piggywaspushed hi fellow Bedfordian. I keep refreshing to see if there are any declarations. We used to have a really good independent Councillor but he retired a couple of elections ago. He had a personal following based entirely on being ethical and competent. Sadly our ward has reverted to Tory and I wouldn't say either description applies to his replacement. Not bothering to acknowledge queries from his constituents didn't stop him being re-elected last time.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2023 16:37

Yes , that's the BBC's take

Sir John Curtice explained that the Projected National Share is good.
•Biggest Labour lead since 2010 (actually since 2001)
•Labour share same as last year
•Tories "not far-off rock bottom" of Major years
•LibDem share highest since 2010

Did Reform have any candidates? If they haven’t then that’s a section of the Tory vote that will go in a general election I would have thought. I’d be surprised if their voters were voting Lib/lab/green in a local election. Weirder things have happened though.

I read they did but gained no seats.

Labour has won Dover from the Cons, guess 'stop the boats' wasn't a priority there after all

That's exactly what I thought. Gaining Dover sends a very clear message to the Tory party.

The trouble is for the Tories, now that they have successfully stopped the boats no one is very much interested it anymore.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2023 16:43

They are planning to replace the small boats with bigger prison boats, but maybe only in non Tory controlled councils

Should be much easier to find those now, perhaps that was the plan?

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 16:45

So that’s why they are making it easier to find non Tory councils.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2023 16:47

Grin as if they are that cunning

Yeah if they tried it they’d probably end up with a landslide.

sleepsforwimps1 · 05/05/2023 16:53

That's, at the very least, the Tory majority gone for East Yorkshire! Been Tory for as long as I can remember!

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2023 16:54

Our ward has stayed with Lib Dem and Residents and kept the Cons out (no other parties)

Word of the day, again, is ‘stiffrump’ (18th century): one who sticks obstinately to the same path despite clear evidence it’s the wrong one.

Minimal seat losses for Tories here. Big gains for Lib Dems but that’s mostly come from independents.

They're currently down 546 seats overall. Still plenty of time to lose more.

No seat losses for the Tories here, which they probably will be claiming as a triumph.
The absence of elections may though be a factor.

😂

Lost 3 here which probably looks like a victory.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/05/2023 17:09

687 now and they’ve only declared 2 more councils.

SerendipityJane · 05/05/2023 17:11

Be curious if the Tories did worse in areas where the MP was a headbanger Brexiteer, rather than a more restrained remainer ?
