House of Fraser when it was properly high-end, before Mike Ashley took over & ruined it.
Borders.
Dickins & Jones in Regent Street.

Don't understand the live for Debenhams - always tatty and full of rubbish, so I don't really know why they lasted as long as they did.

Needmorelego · 26/04/2023 08:25

@Willmafrockfit some of the products Wilkos sells are literally the same as what Woolies used to sell. When Woolworths went bust a lot of their 'own brand' products were just repackaged at the manufacturers to be sold in places like Wilkos.

Chelsea Girl - thought it was so grown up when I was a pre-teen in the mid 1980s (River Island not the same 😀) I still have a white camisole with the very 1980's 'Chelsea Girl' label!

Tammy Girl - early teen years late 1980s, it was the place to shop

Miss Selfridge - later teen & student years. Used to love the one on Oxford St. It always had that edge over Topshop

I remember going into Past Times & I didn't really get it, other than a beautiful Deco jewellery box that my best friend bought me which people still admire 25+ years later. But Past Times is now one of my regular searches on eBay, they made some lovely stuff that occasionally turns up pre-owned.

Some great blasts from the past here - Clockhouse at C&A, had forgotten that one!

Don't think I've seen Coppernob mentioned.

I've reached an age where I wish there was a BHS lighting department still going!

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 26/04/2023 10:51

@summerfinn 99% of my wardrobe was from Awear. I still feel sad when I walk past where ours was on the Main Street

Principles
Richards

Yes when Principles was the original - none of this cheap crap that Debenhams produces under this label now!
I used to buy my work clothes from both of these shops in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

mejon · 26/04/2023 13:24

Racing Green
The Pier - I still use pasta bowls that must be a good 25 years old if not older.
Eddie Bauer - they're still in the US but there were branches here in the 90s.
Warehouse of the 80s/90s - I wish I'd kept some of the fabulous items bought there then.
House of Frazer as it used to be. Howells of Cardiff was THE posh shop when I was growing up. It's just closed and will no doubt be turned into flats and coffee shops.

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/04/2023 13:33

Steamer Trading, although I believe there are still some around.
The Pier
Bay Trading
Republic

fairtrauchled · 26/04/2023 13:36

Jenners(part of House of Fraser)
Borders books(had a great cafe)

Oasis was my absolute favourite clothes shop.
Also miss Warehouse and Top Shop.

It was mine too!

inhabitantoffrance · 26/04/2023 13:43

Borders... I loved the smell!!
Debenhams - not so much the clothes but my local one was Browns of Chester so I enjoyed going in just to admire the ceiling.

An ancient independent department store in Aberdeen called Esslemont & Macintosh. It sold beautiful leather gloves & hats & similar. It always felt a bit like Grace Brothers! Apparently they'd had the same chap manually operating the lifts for nearly 40 years. It was completely out of its time, closing in 2007, but I have fond memories of it.

SamoyedOfDoom · 26/04/2023 13:55

BHS is the one I miss the most when I'm looking for basic t shirts. Theirs were short enough for me and great quality.

I had a lippy called Coppernob, bought it from Miss Selfridge. I first had it in 1980 (yikes), it stayed on literally all night and my then BF would try to rub it off before kissing me 😂

Tidsleytiddy · 26/04/2023 14:01

Anyone remember the Miss Selfridge shortie dressing gown, white with pink lips all over it circa early 80s?

Yes! The lipstick case mentioned above had the same design on it. I think they sold a mule tyoe slipper as well

SamoyedOfDoom · 26/04/2023 14:02

type 🙄

Tidsleytiddy · 26/04/2023 14:02

Loved it 💋

Tidsleytiddy · 26/04/2023 14:03

Miss Selfridge box jackets around 1978. Sort of tweedy wool x

Straightlineruler · 26/04/2023 14:07

Correcting myself, the liostick was called COPPER KNOCKERS, not Coppernob!

Aw, lovely store, with the best scones and those individual filter coffees ( Rombouts?)
I know it still exists online, and in other cities, but John Lewis was generally worth the trip to Aberdeen. Their online service and delivery is just crap.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/04/2023 14:14

I used to like those little independent department stores that many towns had. Wests in Ilford and Bulloughs in Carlisle both sadly gone. Love Jarrolds in Norwich and hope and pray it never closes down.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 26/04/2023 14:18

Kew - Jigsaw’s cheaper sibling. Lovely clothes in natural fibres.

Shelley’s shoes.

Topshop, obvs.
