Miss selfridge has closed?!? Whaaaaaatttt

i mean the last and only thing I got from there was 2015 but still it’s closed???

Well technically it was bought by ASOS, but to all intents and purposes it’s gone.

EustaceTheMonk · 26/04/2023 00:52

Turtles in Croydon. The best tool and hobby shop in history.

luluposs · 26/04/2023 00:53

Omg now I feel really old. Left England in 2002 and only came back to live 4 years ago - a bunch of these you're all mentioning I hadn't realized didn't exist anymore!! Confused

Kookai, Warehouse, Miss Selfridge, Shelley's shoes was fab!

The west end department stores in London which my Mum took me to as a kid and I ended up working at as a student like Dickens & Jones, Debenhams, Simpson's in the Strand, Edgar and something? I can't believe now Fenwicks on Bond St is closing too! So many memories... :(

FrostieBoabby · 26/04/2023 00:55

I loved Woolworths, buying new stationery in the summer holidays for the next school year.

Also the big Debenhams stores, Dorothy Perkins, Internationale, Thorntons, BHS and their cafe with almost free lunch if you had freebie vouchers. Oh, and my local craft shop....

Can I also add banks, as a Power of Attorney for a relative everything banking related is pretty much impossible without an in person local bank.

BillyNoM8s · 26/04/2023 01:00

Oh, and Athena! Flipping through all the posters.

Stressybetty · 26/04/2023 01:01

I liked having a nose round Tie Rack and stroking the pashmina shawls 😂

louderthan · 26/04/2023 01:02

@Saschka Tizz's!!!!! Omg. A Lewes institution. My friends and I used to make the trip from Brighton especially.

Loub55 · 26/04/2023 01:07

I used to like the Big W store near me although it wasnt around long.

Dorothy Perkins and warehouse
Barratts shoes

My town had a Hallmark cards years ago that was a nice shop!

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/04/2023 01:10

Loved The Pier. Used to get such unique things in there.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/04/2023 01:14

All those stores in the West End. Dickins & Jones, Swan & Edgar, Marshall & Snelgrove. And many years ago when fur was a thing, Swears & Wells at Oxford Circus. Would never wear it now though. Biba in Kensington High Street.

TheWordOfBagheera · 26/04/2023 01:29

Past Times - Christmas catalogue or physical shop were equally enchanting. Don't think I ever had the money to buy anything, but loved it nonetheless!

There was a chain called BAY 20-25 years ago. It was dirt cheap but some of the clothes were really lovely and well made, especially some summery bias cut skirts and dresses. Washed really well too.

Ah Bay Trading! I got all my super shiny clothes there in the late 90s/early 00s.

lavenderlou · 26/04/2023 02:07

I also used to like River Island when it was in its early 90s American paddlesteamer incarnation with all the dark wood. They had lovely arty carrier bags which were obligatory to use as your PE bag at my secondary school.

Catsmere · 26/04/2023 02:13

Michael’s Corner Store (six floors of fabric in Melbourne).

Bagpuss2022 · 26/04/2023 02:48

Ahh Bay trading I forgot about that I had about 6 of those fake shiny plastic jackets in garish colours

dramalynn · 26/04/2023 02:59

I loved Kookai. I remember when the logo bags were fashionable. I had one and was told it was pretentious.

I bought so many clothes from there.

evtheria · 26/04/2023 03:08

Borders - went to one in Singapore that was just THE BEST! It had so many places to sit and read, really warm ambience, the music area where you could listen to CDs via headphones, and being a big chain the range of books was amazing... it was just perfect 😭

Topseyt123 · 26/04/2023 03:35

A couple of these do still exist and it was the UK operation that closed.

Woolworths still exists in countries like Australia, and I think in the US too.

There is still C & A in Europe. It never closed down there I was in one in a large Spanish shopping centre a few weeks ago.

I do miss both from UK High Streets though. Those that have filled the holes they left just aren't the same.

ChocolatGateaux · 26/04/2023 05:51

Woolworths - pic n mix, record section. I've got a recurring dream where I'm in Woolies and can't find what I'm looking for... very odd, for Woolies! Love the dream
though, mooching through a lovely shop.
C&A - I used to go in there every week and spend my Saturday job wages!
and BHS - loved their sales after Christmas and homewards section.
Fairheads in Ilford because they still used the vacuum tins the staff sent off to the cash office for change when I worked there mid-1980s. Gloriously old fashioned shop.

IHeartGeneHunt · 26/04/2023 06:06

La Senza
Jane Norman
Tammy Girl
And there used to be a bakery in my dad's parents town, Don Miller's, they made the world's best jam doughnuts.

Rant46892 · 26/04/2023 06:20

So many of these- online doesn’t feel the same.
Maine and Mantaray from Debenhams
Athena

PsychoHotSauce · 26/04/2023 06:30

I discovered Jane Norman shortly before it went downhill. Everything was fitted, flattering, and true to size. I basically never left without finding stuff I liked.

Then something happened and it all went to shite Sad I miss that brief period in my life when I was able to go shopping and find clothes that suited me consistently!

Alighttouchonthetiller · 26/04/2023 06:30

I miss my local John Lewis. Nearest one now requires a major day out to visit. I'm so cross they closed it. The fuckers.

ThePoshUns · 26/04/2023 06:39
