I miss mooching round Debenhams

Needmorelego · 27/04/2023 09:17

@ssd but did you actually buy stuff from Debenhams or just mooch 😂
They went bust because they weren't selling enough.

blobby10 · 27/04/2023 09:20

I miss the Fenwicks in my home town - it was a true 'old' store with lots of little areas on each floor with a different brand or product in and wooden bannisters on the carpeted stairs and a rickety old lift to take you up to haberdashery and the restaurant on the top floor!! We also had a Rackhams with a similar layout and building style! They both had liveried doormen too in the 70s !!

Also miss Debenhams - its was my go-to for everything whether it was a suit for work or an evening dress or casual clothes. you could always find something in the concessions and the Debenhams own brands were fab.

More recently I'm really going to miss M&Co.

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 09:21

for christmas presents.

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 09:22

i never mooched, never went clothes shopping just for fun,
only a purpose.
not guilty

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 27/04/2023 09:28

All mentioned before but, Clockhouse at C&A. I got a beautiful embroidered blouse there which I wore to death. Our Price, Saxone and Etams (always headed straight for the sale rail)

Oh I'd forgotten Rackhams! The one I knew of was Brown Muffs before it was bought out by the House of Fraser group

Crunchingleaf · 27/04/2023 09:38

Oasis
Topshop
Warehouse
Debenhams

I don’t like shopping online. I don’t remember to return the stuff that does not suit or is very poor quality. I like being able to feel the fabric and see the quality of the items.
If I am buying tricky items like jeans or a dress. I prefer grabbing a few options and buying the one that fits and suits me the best.

Not a store but in Worthing there was a fabulous second hand book shop we called the house of books. It was a big old terraced house with books crammed into every room and even up the stairs.

This sounds like heaven.

Bookist · 27/04/2023 09:52

Next when it used to sell good quality clothing and the shops were fitted out with wooden shelving, rugs on the floors and subdued lighting.

The Reject Shop.

Vickerstaff's. A chain of quirky stationery shops which sold rainbow coloured writing paper and matching envelopes.

Batalax · 27/04/2023 09:55

I miss Debenhams the most.

Soozikinzii · 27/04/2023 09:57

Lewis's in Liverpool with the cafe up at the top . Owen owens , Blacklers Tyrers in St Helens all the big departments stores. So exciting at Christmas time with the grottos !

yes I agree with this about the body shop being rubbish now. I have a teen dd and we recently went in the body shop and i couldnt believe how rubbish its gone. I was telling dd how great it was when I was her age early 90s. what's happened to the animal and fruit shaped little soaps and the little bottles of tangerine bubble bath. And not forgetting the dewberry or white musk body sprays.
Teenagers no longer shop at body shop like we did body shop need to bring all this stuff back.

Definitely. I'm pretty sure in the late 90s or so for their anniversary they brought out some discontinued items. They need to do it again.

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 10:15

body shop is not appealing at all now.

Needmorelego · 27/04/2023 10:15

@theblackradiator I find teens buy a lot of their cheap cosmetics/toiletries from places like Savers, B+M or Primark these days.

ChocChipHandbag · 27/04/2023 19:27

@SephrinaX

What Every Woman Wantss*

It was maybe more Central Belt. Commonly known as "Whateverys" and seen as a bit cheapo.

Turns out nit at all connected to Razzle Dazzle though!

ChocChipHandbag · 27/04/2023 19:29

Link but working but if you put in Whate Every Woman Wants (retail chain) the Wikipedia page will come up.

Daisychainsandglitter · 27/04/2023 20:44

For those of you that liked Past Times the Museum Collection sells very similar items. It's online but worth taking a look.

I just Googled that - I think it's called Museum Selection? Some beautiful things there, thank you for the suggestion 🙂

Daisychainsandglitter · 28/04/2023 03:10

Yes that's the one- sorry was typing in a rush earlier.

ODFOx · 28/04/2023 08:54

Not a store but I loved made.com and was very disappointed when they folded.
The website sells next snd argos stuff now I think. Not the same.

SOMumm · 28/04/2023 08:59

AprillaCourt · 27/04/2023 08:48

@SOMumm That's why I was asking about Cripps earlier in the thread, having read about the Liverpool Bold Street time slip I didn't know if it was a stand alone store in Liverpool or whether it had been a chain historically 🙂

Yes, a standalone store, old fashioned even in the mid sixties, at the bottom of Bold Street, the Bond Street of the NorthWest.
(I have my own time slip tale.)

Deathraystare · 28/04/2023 09:05

Debenhams, Littlewoods, BHS, C&A (though the stuff was normally rubbish quality), Pier 1 Imports, Laura Ashley, Richards, Van Allen.

Deathraystare · 28/04/2023 09:06

Oh! And of course Woolworths!!

MaryBoggintonTrotterSmyke · 28/04/2023 09:59

@blackpearwhitelilies ooh great idea, thank you!
