Woolies
BHS at Christmas
I know it's still going but the body shop in the late 80s and early 90s were the best. It's rubbish now 😞

PenelopeTitsDrop3121 · 26/04/2023 14:38

Our price and Athena

AprillaCourt · 26/04/2023 15:07

@Timeforachangeisitnot I moved from Aberdeen before John Lewis went but I used to love a wander round there. Bought the best knee high Italian leather boots ever made there in 2004! It was always a bright & clear store, a nice shopping experience.

mondaytosunday · 26/04/2023 15:39

Gymboree for the colourful kids clothes!

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 26/04/2023 10:51

@summerfinn 99% of my wardrobe was from Awear. I still feel sad when I walk past where ours was on the Main Street

Mine too. There really isn't one shop anymore that you can go into a be guaranteed to find something nice. I can't believe it's gone since 2015. Some great memories of my nanny taking me as a teenager to buy me clothes.

I had a lippy called Coppernob, bought it from Miss Selfridge. I first had it in 1980 (yikes), it stayed on literally all night and my then BF would try to rub it off before kissing me 😂

Copperknockers ! I had that and Doris Karlof !

FlibbertyGibbitt · 26/04/2023 16:34

Tidsleytiddy · 26/04/2023 14:01

Anyone remember the Miss Selfridge shortie dressing gown, white with pink lips all over it circa early 80s?

I had that , have seen one on EBay was almost tempted to purchase. Mine fell to bits ☹️

An ancient independent department store in Aberdeen called Esslemont & Macintosh. It sold beautiful leather gloves & hats & similar. It always felt a bit like Grace Brothers! Apparently they'd had the same chap manually operating the lifts for nearly 40 years. It was completely out of its time, closing in 2007, but I have fond memories of it.

My mum had a Saturday job in E&Ms operating the lift. This would have been in the late 1940s

AprillaCourt · 26/04/2023 18:04

@fairtrauchled Ah that's brilliant! I Googled to try & find old photos of the place today. I left Aberdeen in 2009 but have never forgotten it. Still got the long length leather gloves I bought there 🙂

Londre · 26/04/2023 18:17

None. They went bust for a reason.

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/04/2023 18:32

Ah Blockbusters! Choosing a video, then went on to DVDs. The popcorn and ice cream. It was three movies for £10 was it? Loved those days! Be kind, rewind!

I miss Woolworths tat at Christmas.

Athena definitely missed!

BHS and Debenhams

C & A even though it was shit 😊

Carpenters home stores

Oh I'm feeling all nostalgic now.

summerfinn · 26/04/2023 00:07

Awear.... for all you fellow Irish women. Please tell me I'm not the only one that missses this shop? The sizing was accurate and the clothes were good quality and nice. Miss it so much 😭

I remember when it was called Gaywear. At some point they changed the name to AWear. Would you believe, I bought two tops there for a holiday about 20 years ago (same top in two different colours. I haven't worn them in years and did a big clear out during Covid and consigned them to a charity shop bag. DD took a shine to them and removed them from the bag. She wears them all the time. I was amused until she told me that they're considered vintage clothes Blush.

Loub55 · 26/04/2023 20:43

We had an Outfit store that stocked warehouse, dotty p, miss selfridge, I miss that!

And miss our local John Lewis and Debenhams 😔

I'd forgotten about Bay Trading, loved that in my teens!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/04/2023 23:40

You still get Netto in Germany - I just went to one. They had lovely apples.

I miss one called what everyone wants which was in Glasgow.
I think it maybe changed to Razzle Dazzle.

I already miss m and co because i had one close by and ds2 could tolerate going there because it was quiet. In retrospect that should have been a hint it wasn't going to last.

Razzle Dazzle became "Internacionale"

Which have all gone now as well.

Conductpolicy · 26/04/2023 21:04

Top shop.
Woolworths

Nitgel · 26/04/2023 21:09

Reject shop

threesheets · 26/04/2023 21:16

Lewis's in Glasgow (not to be confused with John Lewis). Cracking toy department.

blackpearwhitelilies · 26/04/2023 21:17

Past Times

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/04/2023 21:30

We still have a hmv. DD bought her first poster from there the other week 😊

theblackradiator · 26/04/2023 21:36

C&A and Ethel Austins
I also miss a good market they've all gone now in my area which is a shame. much preferred to buy my fruit&veg off the market stalls it was much fresher than supermarket rubbish that needs throwing away the day after buying as its going rotten. and the pet stalls were great. miss how shopping used to be.

theblackradiator · 26/04/2023 21:37

we also had an ex catalogue shop called Hitchens. had some bargains out of there bloody miss that shop.

PiddleOfPuppies · 26/04/2023 21:39

I miss the Pier and Cargo Homestores. My first flat was in Surbiton and I used to love looking at what I couldn't afford in the Pier and then buying wine glasses and picture frames in Cargo.

Neverknowinglysensible · 26/04/2023 21:40

mejon · 26/04/2023 13:24

Racing Green
The Pier - I still use pasta bowls that must be a good 25 years old if not older.
Eddie Bauer - they're still in the US but there were branches here in the 90s.
Warehouse of the 80s/90s - I wish I'd kept some of the fabulous items bought there then.
House of Frazer as it used to be. Howells of Cardiff was THE posh shop when I was growing up. It's just closed and will no doubt be turned into flats and coffee shops.

Noooo! Howells can’t close. So many happy memories of sclepping around it as a poor student in the late 1980’s dreaming that, one day, I’d be able to afford to shop there. (I did buy a pair of RayBans from Howells years later and really thought I’d made it!)
I also miss the Pier, Richard Shops, BHS lighting department, Kookai (always the go to place for night-out dresses) and Desigual - they had stand-alone shops but the brand was also sold in Howells- I used to buy the most amazing coats from there!
