Inspired why the what is really going. On in our schools, well Laura …. Thread

why has there not been an uprising against the story government?

the things going on in schools, the level of SEND needs and teachers leaving in droves.

the state of the NHS - staff overwhelmed and completely demoralised. It’s on its knees.

strikes across many public sector services for decent pay due to inflation and cost of living.

their Austerity policy has destroyed public services.

I work in social services and I see it every day. And several u turns on policy for social care - the cap on care costs, the reversal of the NI increase which was meant to provide funding for NHS and social care.

lied to about their behaviour during covid.

it just goes on

surely the whole of the UK needs a wake up call and needs to do something…

I think Labour are going to have to do a lot better than they are doing so far. Those posters were crap and the Diane Abbott shit show just confirms people's worst fears.

I think the Tories are going to have to do a lot better than the are doing so far. The following shit shows are just a few examples.....
Pandemic response
Cost of living crisis
Matt Hancock snogging his mistress in the office

Liz Truss budge
Boris Johnson Party Gate

PPE disaster and money down drain
£240 million Green Deal failure
Failure to build starter homes
Northern Powerhouse Rail failure
HS2 debacle
Grenfell cladding targets missed
Failure to pass Kept Animals bill.....ear docking, puppy smuggling and live export of animals continues today because of this.
Sewage in our rivers
Library closures
Swimming pool closures
Failure to build new hospitals

I could go on......

Sadly all that will be forgotten with an injection of cash into people's pockets, inevitable a few.minths before election. And Labour just are not getting into people's hearts and minds enough to overlook that

GremlinBlinds · 24/04/2023 11:19

The government are threatening legal action against the RCN nurses union in regards to the planned strike this weekend and threatening the nurses with disciplinary action which could effect their nursing registration.

Plus whipping up public anger against nurses.

That kind of thing is probably an example in regards to your question.

And to be brutally frank, not many of the things you've listed affect people directly.

Yes of course it all points to a rubbish grasp of both economics and politics, but apart from the liz truss debacle and the rivers of poo I don't hear many people talking about the other things (middle.class south east)

VincentVaguer · 24/04/2023 11:23

Should say 'affect MANY people directly'

Of course everyone of them affect SOME people directly, but not enough.

All the things listed tell a story about the intentions, ethos and behaviour of the party. Importantly they all describe how tax payers money is spent/wasted.

Many of them affect us all directly e.g. cost of living, hospitals, covid, housing.

I understand your comments about Diane Abbot and the posters but put these against the hard evidence of 13 years of Tory government.

SmartHome · 24/04/2023 11:39

I think it's because there's no credible opposition. I would never and have never voted conservative but I can't vote labour now either.

Blossomtoes · 24/04/2023 12:03

You need someone to be honest and say the reality of how much it would cost to fix everything to the level people want and then be honest about what can be done to fix it.

Which is precisely what the Labour Party is doing. Their manifesto will be fully costed.

ejbaxa · 24/04/2023 12:05

It's pretty obvious why no uprising - do you actually remember the person who was head of the opposition at the last election?! I don't trust any of the parties. If there was a proper alternative, then yes there might be an uprising. But I just think that the alternative is equally shit.

I don't think anyone on the ground will have any idea if those costs are feasible or not.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 24/04/2023 12:10

Exhausted with it all, going from one car crash to the next

no viable alternative. Starmer, kahn and abbot have their critics.

we like to follow the rules and protests rarely change anything, but may cause you employment issues.

I’m happy that they won’t be plucked out of thin air. Rachel Reeves is a former Bank of England economist, I’ll believe her over whichever of the PM’s mates is serving as chancellor at the next election.

No agree, I think a lot of the promises conservatives made to Lib Dem’s got broken and I think Lib Dem’s got blamed for a lot of conservatives policies at the next election

It isn’t racist to want controlled immigration. I’m frankly bloody worried about the fact we have no idea who is coming to these shores in amongst genuine refugees. And again on this issue that is another reason I am going (legally and via a very expensive visa system)!”

Why is it ok for you to emigrate? Presumably you’re not an asylum seeker? You’re leaving just because you don’t want to live here anymore? Yet you’re criticising other people for wanting to do the same and come to the UK?

What’s the difference between you and them?

The difference surely is that one adheres to the laws of the destination country (applies for visa through the appropriate route and meets the criteria for settlement or accepts rejection if necessary), and one does not.

Icedlatteplease · 24/04/2023 13:14

I'm poor, intelligent work in a school and have extensive dealings with the NHS/ SEN services through caring for DS. I should be a labour voter. I'm still not sure I can vote Labour.

Last time Labour were in they bankrupted the country. Maybe it wouldn't happen if there hadn't been an economic crisis, but they bailed out their banker buddies then failed to hold them to account. I'm worse off now because really we haven't sorted out that fundamental problem. Is that Conservatives fault for failing to sort it or Labour's fault for causing it, I'm still not sure.

Also there I'd absolutely no point in bringing in minimum wage if we then import everything from countries that don't have minimum wage.

I'm absolutely fucking appalled by the hypocrisy of the teaching and nursing strikes.

Children can't go on holiday with their family in school time and those that cant attend through medical/sen difficulties are punished through attendance awards, but teachers can go on strike and its OK? I will be in next strike day helping Year 11s prepare for their core subject GCSEs.....

Nurses were heroes because we care, but not when we are going on strike because striking is more important than the people who will die as a result of the strikes. And the problem is some nurses are heroes but if you've ever been in a ward with nurses who would rather sit and talk about how hard worked they are whilst ignoring someone's buzzer or failing to give pain killing medication, you develop a little cynicism. NHS simply shouldn't be allowed to strike.

The strikes make me even less likely to vote Labour.

There's a hell of a lot of waste in all the public services especially CAMHS, but no party is dealing with that. A significant proportion of the country simply can't afford higher taxes to fund the NHS, schools etc because housing costs are too high. We absolutely need to be manufacturing our own stuff, but for that to work with minimum wage etc we need to scrap cheap imports.

When Labour announces a protectionist economy, newly built council homes and NHS reforms that keep it free at the point of need, then I will be voting Labour. In fact I will vote in any party that announces those policies.

As it is the leader of the Labour Party is a lawyer who changes his values with the wind (and yes can't be trusted with women's rights) with a shadow cabinet that really don't inspire confidence.

I'm probably spoiling my ballot again.

I can't understand why you were even asked that question to be honest.

I'm at a loss as to how anyone thinks migrating legally and illegally are the same thing.

Icedlatteplease · 24/04/2023 13:30

Oh and the most effective movement that achieved its political ends was not an uprising.

it was a grass roots political party that almost bought down the Conservative party, did bring down one PM and rendered several governments unable to rule. It also crossed traditional party boundaries and people who traditionally were on both ends of the spectrum with a common goal

Whatever you think of Brexit, you have to admire the throughly calculated and ruthless manner UKIP peacefully achieved its goals

Blossomtoes · 24/04/2023 13:30

That’s a complete misrepresentation of what happened. The banks were bailed out to prevent financial Armageddon. Remember the queues of people withdrawing their money from Northern Rock? If that had been replicated across all the financial institutions the whole system would have collapsed.

Presumably you’ve forgotten how well the country was run in the first decade of this century. Public services worked properly and were left in excellent health in 2010. The current shitshow has Tory fingerprints all over it.

These two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other. No idea why you think they do.

"Nurses were heroes because we care, but not when we are going on strike because striking is more important than the people who will die as a result of the strikes. And the problem is some nurses are heroes but if you've ever been in a ward with nurses who would rather sit and talk about how hard worked they are whilst ignoring someone's buzzer or failing to give pain killing medication, you develop a little cynicism. NHS simply shouldn't be allowed to strike."

Again, what are you thinking is happening? Nurses are striking because it is now such a shit prospect for a career that we have a huge deficit in nursing posts that the current workers are leaving because it is so dreadful. And the NHS can't recruit enough new nurses because it's a degree course where you get into debt and then that is not rewarded when you qualify because of poor pay and overwork which will never improve because of poor pay and overwork. Its not that nurses are greedy and lazy, if that was the case the government and YOU wouldn't care if they were striking because they wouldn't be missed. You're being extremely offensive and very, very unintelligent (you said you're intelligent which is why I mentioned it) to suggest that nurses think striking is more important than people dying 🙄

"I'm poor, intelligent work in a school and have extensive dealings with the NHS/ SEN services through caring for DS" then you go on to say "There's a hell of a lot of waste in all the public services especially CAMHS"

What waste do you think is happening? Particularly in CAMHS as you mentioned them?

Oh I'm not saying they shouldn't have bailed out the banks... just really the banking industry should have seen greater regulation and fiscal responsibility for the mess after. Greater regulation of the futures markets might have been a good start....

Hmmmmm...... tbh whilst I agree superficially regarding public services many of the subsequent problems were also ushered in by that same Labour government and some if the present NHS/Education difficulties are as much.

Labour/Tony Blair oversaw mass immigration which led to the rise in UKIP, lowering of wages and therefore ultimately Brexit. Labour's working tax credits led to the expectation that companies should able to pay a subsistence wage that the govenment will supplement.

At the same time neither the Conservative nor Labour government could predict the rise in SEN rates or mental health difficulties and the impact that would have on services. Whilst you can look at the crisis in the NHS as purely being down to underfunding I really don't think it is. The NHS was built in an age where people died of cancer, we simply couldnt keep many people s alive like we can now and we have ever increasing rates of dementia. Rates of SN in children are rising because frankly, genetics is a bitch. The NHS and care simply simply isn't designed to cope with the challenges it now faces.

I think many services don't work in an integrated way which increases long term costs in health, social care and education. Medical Interventions that should be normalised in education for all children (because all children benefit mildly from them but it may be the difference between a child with SN be in or out of school). Educationally psychologists and CAMHs should be in every school full time.

You can throw money at a problem (that many families can't actually afford) but if your throwing money at something that is too old fashioned to work for the challenges of modern medicine what's the point?
