If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

I am a language teacher. I use Google translate a lot, not because I don't know, just because I can't be arsed.

I sort of work in finance. I actively avoid considering how to invest my own savings and have made horrible choices in the past.

This thread should go in Classics 🙂

I worked for a debt advice charity. I lived on my overdraft and dreaded opening my credit card bill.

Trained bra fitter. I go on all day about wearing the correct size for the support you get from the underband.

I wear the wrong size cos its comfiest

These responses are so incredibly reassuring. Love it! 😂

Support Worker.

Constantly making the guys I support healthy salads, helping them dress I nice clothing, suggesting nice walks and engaging activities.

At home I eat Krave out of the box while wearing pyjamas and think walking to the local Tesco is a trek.

I need my own support worker.

I like the sound of you 😀

There is a bit of knowledge in not bothering to read the small print as a lawyer 1. If its a standard terms contract you have no hope of changing the terms anyway and 2. If the terms are unfair they are unenforceable.

Only exception - i always read insurance exclusions!

Please could you tell us more about this?

@RosesofAmsterdam

I follow the simple rule of paying myself first.

I salary sacrifice just over 30% into workplace pension and optimise employer matching (free money!)

c20% goes into ISA as I need to fund gap when not working between 50 and 58 ( can’t access my pension until then)

Note same rules apply to annual bonus too, not just my salary.

All investments well diversified in ready made funds. I’m not an investment or stock expert! I leave that to the fund managers.

Do not overpay mortgage as fixed term with decent interest rate so I’m better off investing this (overpaying mortgage tends to be human emotional need for security - but my savings pot gives me this)

I don’t live frugally but I don’t spend money on a lot of material things - my dogs and kids probably cost me the most! I’m probably a bit of a minimalist so only spend on things that really bring me joy.

Money left over from salary covers living costs and fun.

Another lawyer who rarely reads anything contractual which is non work related.

my will needed updating at least 5 years ago, and I didn’t do one at all until I had my 4th child. My accountant and financial adviser despair of me

I work in marketing and do pretty well but I could never market myself. I've only been able to get jobs in marketing if it involved presentation of their products but when it comes to selling myself during a interview despite having a good education and experience, I just freeze. I just cannot for the life of me just sell myself.

ViciousChicken · 30/04/2023 09:50

I’m a physio with horrendous posture, long term back pain and a shoulder injury that isn’t healing because I can’t be arsed to do my exercises.
My advice to friends and family who come to me with a problem is usually ‘keep it moving and it’ll get better’. Most things do in time. 🤷‍♀️

I’m a cleaner and my house is always messy!

crimsonpeak · 01/05/2023 07:43

Also guilty of supporting others and doling out advice whilst my fridge is bare and my washing threatens to engulf the entire utility room.
