If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

I'm a lawyer. Never read the small print on anything before clicking agree.

Same! Appalling 😂. Although I would take my own advice not to enter into ridiculous disputes with my neighbours - why, just why?

I’m a payroll administrator and never ever check my payslips or tax code
i just accept whatever goes in my bank.
I see it like I cannot be bothered to look at pay in my own time as I do enough of that.

Yup we know a master mechanic for a high end sports car brand.
Yet his car is so shoddy and makes all sorts of squealing noises.
He says he cba looking at cars on his time off.

ThreeLeggedCat · 21/04/2023 19:28

Environmental health officer so do food hygiene inspections etc. I’m the worst for ignoring use by dates and picking the mould off stuff before I cook it. To be fair though I’m not going to sell what I cook to the general public.

RosesofAmsterdam · 21/04/2023 19:30

I'm a doctor... always bury my head in the sand about my own illness, hate visiting my GP and avoid at all costs. Terrible patient. But I do take all and any drugs offered and vaccines offered always (because, science).

I help people save for retirement and I invest 50% of my income pa. (I want to retire early!!)

Please could you tell us more about this?

Pinkflipflop85 · 21/04/2023 19:32

Teacher.

My child does not do homework.

I hate setting it for the kids in my class but I have to....

Thecomfortador · 21/04/2023 19:33

I work in a call centre for a social care service, telling people well done for picking up the phone etc. I'm really bad at making phone calls to ask for help. The anxiety is real. Also dp is a computer science specialist and spends his life faffing about with cables, chargers, trying to get stuff to work, buying cheap laptops that are in no way suitable for his needs. He asked me once whether the light on the caps lock meant the caps lock was on.

LittleFreakJezebel · 21/04/2023 19:36

@alwaysmovingforwards my DP is the same, builds race cars for a living but drives an 07 plate fiesta that is now rust and mud coloured rather than black as 'it gets him from A to B'.

LongTimeinPharmacy · 21/04/2023 19:38

I tell people how to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce alcohol consumption and tell them we can’t sell steroid cream for the face. I smoke, could do with losing a few pounds, drink more than is good for me and buy steroid cream to smear on my face when needed.

I can’t confirm or deny my compliance to my own medications for a chronic illness but the patients are advised compliance is essential.

I need to take my own advice really…

FKATondelayo · 21/04/2023 19:39

Not me but DH. He's a creative director. When we got married he said not to bother getting wedding prints as he would do the scanning, printing and framing. That was over 20 years ago. Still waiting.

He is, as you would expect, an artist and art fan but all our many pictures and paintings are sitting in the attic waiting for him to decide where to hang them up. And even though he's art directed shoots with A listers, he has probably taken about 3 photos of me in our entire relationship.

NellyTimes · 21/04/2023 19:39

I work in dentistry and every practice I've ever worked has always had biscuits, cake and chocolate on the go in the staff room and the dentists are always necking energy drinks.

Jellykat · 21/04/2023 19:53

I'm a cleaner, my house is an absolute tip (i kid you not)
I'm also a seamstress, never make my own clothes and a lot of my clothes have holes in..
if you're doing it all day, why would you want to do it in the evenings too? thats my logic

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/04/2023 19:57

I'm a florist and I absolutely never have flowers or plants at home and my garden is a tip. I also actively hate having to talk about weddings.

stargirl1701 · 21/04/2023 20:00

I'm a teacher. My DC don't do any homework

FiftyNotNifty · 21/04/2023 20:01

I'm a teacher and my children are average students who don't do homework. DH is a painter and you should see the fecking state of our house.

IHateLegDay · 21/04/2023 20:01

DH is a dentist and spends his life telling patients to reduce their sugar intake.
He himself can happily inhale a packet of chocolate digestives in one sitting 😂
He says it's fine because he knows how to brush properly 😂🙈

Easterfunbun · 21/04/2023 20:03

@IHateLegDay

He probably does have a point. I’ve ate copious amounts of sugar over my lifetime and never one filling due to always cleaning my teeth thoroughly.

HeadacheEarthquake · 21/04/2023 20:06

Musician here. Tell my students the perfect way to practise and wonderful advice on context and interpretation, self marketing and vocal health.

Do I do any of it? Do I fuck.

This used to be my job….don’t do as I do, do as I say….😂

Frances24 · 21/04/2023 20:08

I work in wealth management for high net worth clients (think £500K + in investments not including property) and unfortunately I am not rich 🤣

Alighttouchonthetiller · 21/04/2023 20:09

Long-serving secondary school teacher. Absolutely no discipline problems at school. Students hang.on my every word etc yet can't get my dog to sit on command and no-one in my house listens to anything I say.

PotBelliesGiveGoodLoving · 21/04/2023 20:20

I spend every day buggering around with 4G and 5G networks and have no idea how to use my phone.

ghlily · 21/04/2023 20:25

I’m a doctor and when I’m ill, I ignore my symptoms until they eventually go away. I also don’t drink enough water, don’t get enough sleep and am only able to work because of the amount of coffee I drink.

TheBirdintheCave · 21/04/2023 20:25

My husband is a photographer. Yes we have beautiful family photos BUT they never make it off his laptop 😂 Our son is two and we've only just had photos of him printed and framed.

I'm a graphic designer and... I can't think of how I'd use that for myself. I made my own wedding invitations and stationary? 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
