If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

I'm a primary school Teacher

I advise parents on behaviour etc all the time but my darling DC are not always the best behaved!

givingupchocolatemonday · 21/04/2023 22:08

I'm an accountant

Always telling people to file their returns on time to avoid penalties and how to control their bank accounts etc. currently in so much debt and fines coming out of my ears

kierrashouse54 · 21/04/2023 22:13

I'm a photographer. My daughter is almost 2 and I'm only half way through editing her newborn photos 😅

Nurse here. I tell patients the importance of self care, getting good rest, having a good diet/keeping hydrated, exercise (as appropriate of course!), etc. I make sure my staff take their rest breaks and are fed/have enough to drink, and I'll cover those breaks etc.

I don't often take breaks - well if I do, I am catching up on notes, doing audits/whatever. I do have a water bottle with me, but it's more often a case of necking a coffee and then getting back into working. Once I get home, I'm making sure house is sorted, kids sorted and I keep up with my studies. I should take better care of myself and get more sleep (I'm slowly practising what I preach!!!). On plus side, I can walk 15-20K steps a day on a shift, I don't smoke, I rarely drink and I do have a healthy diet.

Lead a citizens office yo help thousands of people keep their paperwork in order.

My personal life admin is a disaster.

My OH is a tradie and the state of our house is embarrassing. It's clean and tidy thanks to me but painting is unfinished, unworking things in various rooms etc. I 'joke' that I'm going to hire a handyman to get everything done which he gets offended by. One day I'm going to actually do it. It seems he can only get things done to a good standard if he's being paid for it.

This!

My DH has his own electrical company, I have 2 sockets that don't work in my home 😂 (not done by him I might add)

Midwife here. Never wanted to have children myself. And I have been due for my cervical smear for about 3 years.

Heatherjayne1972 · 22/04/2023 06:07

I know many dentists who don’t floss

Driving instructor: Always drive perfectly, never break a speed limit, always courteous to others on the road and never get impatient with those less skilled or experienced than myself.

Also an inveterate liar in my spare time...

Support Worker.

Constantly making the guys I support healthy salads, helping them dress I nice clothing, suggesting nice walks and engaging activities.

At home I eat Krave out of the box while wearing pyjamas and think walking to the local Tesco is a trek.

I need my own support worker.

😂

@Easterfunbun ·
Most people working in mental health have their own issues. Some, extensively so. They’re only disadvantaged if they go in to heal themselves because other than that lived experience is an advantage. I’ve never met a normal mental health nurse mind 😜. Light hearted.

More than a touch of the truth here! But I am a receptionist so hopefully this does not apply to me! One Dr I know was in denial as to his sexuality. Bleeding obvious to everyone else though! He was as camp as a row of tents! "Came out" to a receptionist who said "Yeah John of course we know!" He was totally mystified!! Some of them are also total fruit bats!!

Deathraystare · 22/04/2023 07:46

Oh! Forgot to say! I watched an episode of Big Brother and a woman on there cleaned houses. She was nagging everyone in the house (youngsters who believe that magic pixies clean the house) to clean up after themselves. There was an interview in her own home between her daughters (I don't think they lived there) and it was a shit tip!!!

Woodywoodpeckerharrison · 22/04/2023 07:49

Technology here. Still like good old pen and paper to write notes down on. Prefer to turn my own light switches on when I know technology could do it for me. Have a very out of date phone and not much technology around the house.

WhyTheHeadache · 22/04/2023 08:04

I teach pilates. I've attended about 10 pilates classes as a participant, disliked them all and would never do a pilates workout out of choice.

AveAtqueVale · 22/04/2023 08:09

Doctor here.

Fat and T2 diabetic. Eat too much chocolate and avoid my own GP like the plague. When ill generally try every herbal remedy/ old wives tale going before admitting I might need actual medicine.

HappyStripper · 22/04/2023 08:45

I'm a stripper (now primarily OnlyFans model) - actual real life sex is still at the back of my mind and more of an "oh yeah, we should probably do that sometime" with my husband.

Similarly had a customer who paid me more than he made for 3-4 months - he was a financial advisor.

Whyishewearingasombero · 22/04/2023 09:08

I was quite friendly with my dentist outside the surgery. Her DH was also a dentist and she admitted the whole family occasionally had toffees for lunch. Cheered me enormously.

ImpossibleDrear · 22/04/2023 09:10

Loving this thread so much.

I'm a lawyer. I don't have a will and never read my own leases back when I rented.

Same. Also manage to frequently miss deadlines in my personal life which would literally NEVER happen to me at work. So weird.

Needhelp101 · 22/04/2023 09:28

I'm an author and I'm afraid I do read loads and loads of books.

Having said that, in desperation I did once ask Chat GPT to finish a chapter for me (had to discard the absolute shite it came up with).

Unbridezilla · 22/04/2023 09:34

Project manager here. Super organised and on top of deadlines, finances, risk registers. I love it and thrive.

My wedding is a disorganised heap of chaos. In fact, my "plan" for the past 10 weekends has been to plan out what needs to be done, add invoice deadlines to my calendar etc. Still not happened!

alwaysstressed · 22/04/2023 09:36

Im a dog groomer and my dogs a hairy mess im thinking about outsourcing his groom coz i cant be arsed doing it

Ihaveated · 22/04/2023 09:37

I'm a midwife and I delivered my own baby.
Had a home waterbirth so guarded my perineum and brought him to the surface.

Tried to examine myself in labour but couldn't get my hand the right way round my bump and was really difficult with contractions!
