If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

I'm a cleaner who when at work is a perfectionist... at home is a different matter. I just can't keep on top of it all!! It's not dirty just stuff everywhere I'm blaming the kids 😆

Deputy headteacher. My daughter’s reading record is a work of fiction. We rarely do homework.

greenwaterbottle12 · 21/04/2023 20:35

I'm a cleaner and yes I clean my loo daily so it is sparkling. Cleaning is my therapy!

No, I'm a nurse and constantly telling my patients how important it is to stay hydrated by drinking water and I wake up most mornings with kidney pain from me not drinking water for days, but loads of coffee!

I second this!

Amen!

I work with car mechanics and garages, I don't have a clue when it comes to my own car but I can tell you what's wrong with yours 😂

itsgettingweird · 21/04/2023 20:49

I work in behaviour support for SEND.

My ds has SEND.

I don't always have the headspace or time to follow my own advice.

But I think that's the reason I'm better at my job. Because I actually get it. I get where parents are coming from and get when they are struggling at home. I get that living it is very different to tag teaming a pupil for 6 hours a day.

And I know they appreciate it when I say "I do know it's easy for me to stand here and say what's best"

Support Worker.

Constantly making the guys I support healthy salads, helping them dress I nice clothing, suggesting nice walks and engaging activities.

At home I eat Krave out of the box while wearing pyjamas and think walking to the local Tesco is a trek.

I need my own support worker.

This is brilliantly written 🤣

Financial advisor here and I can never be arsed transferring my credit card to 0% and also forget to price around for car/home insurance. Also gave myself the worst advice two years ago to only fix my mortgage for two years and now look 🙈

PrezelwithMarmite · 21/04/2023 20:53

Dh mechanic, both our cars often go way past needing service, any knocks or noises ignored for months!.

runforyourdog · 21/04/2023 21:09

No! I work in finance / credit risk but I'm pretty slack with my own finances. Not that I would not pay debt or anything but I don't exactly shop around for the best deal and am not very organised with spends, repayments etc.

Vexar · 21/04/2023 21:20

On malfunctioning equipment: My techie sister seems to have one piece of advice for things that aren't working - Have you turned it off and on again/restarted? Most of the time this fixes everything. I could do her job. The rest of the time she says I'm surprised that hasn't worked.

FKATondelayo · 21/04/2023 21:25

As someone who works in digital marketing, I would say about 50% of my colleagues hardly ever post anything on social and 90% would never put our children on there. All use adblockers. I've won awards for Insta campaigns and have never made a single personal instagram post.

shelbaba · 21/04/2023 21:28

Accountant and I am bloody great with my money! I do know some though that are qualified accountants and really awful at managing their own finances. I just don't understand how. To me, it's part of me, comes naturally and just the way my brain functions.

Fairylights7 · 21/04/2023 21:30

I’m a lawyer and in my personal life never read the small print before I sign 🙈

honeylulu · 21/04/2023 21:31

Solicitor. Don't bother reading the small print. Husband is an accountant and shit with money. Oops.

IHeartGeneHunt · 21/04/2023 21:34

I'm a cleaner. (Care home, not private homes.)
My flat is like one of those photos from the 70s before they knocked down the last of the slums.

xsquared · 21/04/2023 21:38

I'm a maths teacher.

DS is revising for A Level maths, but I'm refusing to teach him things that he should have already learnt in year 1.

He will only think he can keep being spoon fed, if I taught him to the test.

Boredof2020 · 21/04/2023 21:38

I'm a cleaner, I confess my house isn't

tracylamont13 · 21/04/2023 21:42

Gardener who specialises in Lawns. I've designed my garden with no lawn as I spend quite enough time with them! Garden itself is ok though, but will get worse as the gardening season goes on and I have less time for it.

gawditswindy · 21/04/2023 21:43

As a teacher homework in my house is optional.

BUT I did spend some time the other day explaining the difference between rhyme and alliteration to my 4yo.

I'm a gardener and my own garden is a neglected wilderness. I'm actually quite embarrassed about it.

Years ago our next door neighbour was a landscape gardener (though more hard stuff than plants)
He did our small front garden for us - nothing fancy, just some paving, grass and a weeping cherry.
His own was very tatty and neglected, and more than once somebody looking for him & not knowing which house knocked on our door!
Eventually he felt shamed into doing his own 🤣

Beaverbridge · 21/04/2023 21:49

I was a cleaner for professional people. Big houses, on Fridays I cleaned 10 bathrooms. I practically had webbed feet climbing in and out of massive showers. Came home, didn't even have my coat off and the wine was being poured!.
My friends husband is a master joiner, their kitchen is falling to pieces.

Great thread

Shintyhappypeople · 21/04/2023 22:06

I'm a head housekeeper. I'm very quick at cleaning the house but probably don't do it as often as it needs.
