If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

No, I'm a nurse and constantly telling my patients how important it is to stay hydrated by drinking water and I wake up most mornings with kidney pain from me not drinking water for days, but loads of coffee!

Doctors in the family

All crap patients when ill. And all head-in-the-sand about the possibility of being ill.

But if they ever do admit there's something up. Then they'll nuke it with the maximum treatment they can get their hands on and soldier on.

I'm a primary school teacher.

I rarely listened to my children read and just asked them which pages they'd read, filled in their reading diaries and signed them.

eurochick · 21/04/2023 17:45

I'm a lawyer. I don't have a will and never read my own leases back when I rented.

countvoncount · 21/04/2023 17:47

30+ years in Dentistry.... I don't floss.

I know several Drs, they drink rather a lot and eat a lot of cakes and biscuits, ignore their ailments until they are really bad and swap medication from their home medicine cabinets amongst themselves.
2 obese Diabetic nurses who spent their day telling diabetic patients they need to reduce weight and watch their diets.
Another HCP who advises people on reducing alcohol but who drinks minimum of a bottle of wine each night followed by a couple of chasers at the weekend.
I also know a chef from a venue that has rave food reviews that eats pot noodles and supermarket triffles.

Support Worker.

Constantly making the guys I support healthy salads, helping them dress I nice clothing, suggesting nice walks and engaging activities.

At home I eat Krave out of the box while wearing pyjamas and think walking to the local Tesco is a trek.

I need my own support worker.

psychiatric nurse and absolutely not. I care more about others than myself and often feel like a fraud.

I like the answers so far.

I love this thread

LemonBall · 21/04/2023 18:08

I'm a lawyer. Never read the small print on anything before clicking agree.

ThePinkQualityStreet · 21/04/2023 18:08

I’m a payroll administrator and never ever check my payslips or tax code
i just accept whatever goes in my bank.
I see it like I cannot be bothered to look at pay in my own time as I do enough of that.

Easterfunbun · 21/04/2023 18:09

Most people working in mental health have their own issues. Some, extensively so. They’re only disadvantaged if they go in to heal themselves because other than that lived experience is an advantage. I’ve never met a normal mental health nurse mind 😜. Light hearted.

sashagabadon · 21/04/2023 18:11

I walk past a house on my way to work each day and it has vans outside that state specialist cleaning services, deep cleaning, any cleaning issue, viruses, bacteria etc and yet it is the most filthy looking house, garden a tip, dogs barking, window cracked. It boggles my mind

MattBerrysHair · 21/04/2023 18:12

I'm a gardener and my own garden is a neglected wilderness. I'm actually quite embarrassed about it.

nevereverhaveieverfeltsobad · 21/04/2023 18:12

Counsellor.

Talk a lot about self-care and (mostly) take my own advice.

But boy do I love a bottle of wine to forget about the day.

MayhemMostly · 21/04/2023 18:12

Met a concept /home /kitchen designer in her actual home over the Easter holiday as we were staying in a holiday park 30mins away from where she lives, and her home was actually amazing. She makes lovely coffee too.
(she's often mentioned on here in the kitchen questions)

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 21/04/2023 18:15

Great thread!

JudeGarret · 21/04/2023 18:18

I'm a beautician and hand on heart I follow my
own skin care advice - after all I'm the best advert for my business.
Never go to bed without taking my make up off
Double cleanse
Exfoliate x3 week
Layer skin care
ALWAYS WEAR SPF- this is the number one thing your future self will thank you for!

I'm crap at following other advice though, exercise and diet need a lot of work

coodawoodashooda · 21/04/2023 18:18

This thread has cheered me up a lot.

LouLou198 · 21/04/2023 18:23

I am a cleaner, my house is very clean Smile

macshoto · 21/04/2023 18:23

Accountants are renown for not being the best at managing their own money (possibly too busy dealing with others...)

Guardiansofthegalaxi · 21/04/2023 18:24

When I was a tax adviser, I would submit my tax return on 31 January, despite having all figures available on 6 April.

PermanentTemporary · 21/04/2023 18:25

I used to be a voice therapist advising people to give up caffeine and alcohol, hydrate, and treat reflux. My own voice is trashed because I live on coffee, drink wine late at night and my urine is dark yellow most of the time.

Wtafis · 21/04/2023 18:26

I’m a good technologist.

I do not follow the same hygiene practices as at work in my own kitchen.

I decide best before dates, at home I exceed them by months.
