If you're a cleaner, is your house clean? If you're a doctor, do you take your own advice? (Lighthearted...sort of!)

Was watching a programme about
hoarding recently and the woman who was struggling was a psychologist who specialised in addiction recovery but though she had papers and clothes up to the ceiling, she admitted she wasn't able to follow her own advice.

I work in health comms and recently found myself enthusiastically writing up a report with a load of advice in it - a lot of which I don't follow myself. I really should though!

Got me thinking about other professions too. If you're in a field where you help other people or give advice, do you follow your own advice/guidelines? Do cleaners have sparkly clean loos? Do GPs watch their salt intake and take their blood pressure? Do parents tell their kids not to do things they kinda do themselves? I'm guilty. 🥵

I'm an accountant/tax advisor I'm good with money but plenty of my colleagues aren't!!

Season0fTheWitch · 21/04/2023 18:29

My best friend used to be a nutritionist, but she ate like crap and somehow got away with it- she felt and looked amazing, great medical results etc. Lives on diet coke and cake though!

I am related to a specific type of doctor who doesn't follow his own advice and often asks colleagues for treatment for something he could prevent.

My MIL is a cleaner and her house is disgusting

My next door neighbour when I was younger was a headteacher and taught her children to not throw books out the window by throwing books out the window...

Dh is a building surveyor/project manager and crazy picky with any of his jobs to the point he will be upset if screw heads are not north/south on plug sockets and when he inspects goes round with a pad of post it notes and picks out minute things. Our house job list as long as your arm, paint peeling off the house etc

Just catching up now but oh my...I'm just glad that I'm not the only hypocrite around these parts.

I'm a teacher and although I give my children the time, space and equipment to do their homework, I don't force them to do so. If they don't do it, they're the ones who have to go to detention, not me. My children are reasonably bright but one has ADHD and struggles with the concept of having to do school work at home. Lockdown was a nightmare!

I'm a cleaner. My house is usually tidy but it's only really clean for about an hour on a Saturday.

In the hour that it IS clean, I sit down with a cup of coffee and enjoy it until my family come home and I see my hard work being undone in minutes.

YetAnotherUser · 21/04/2023 18:51

IT professional, my home computers are all fucking amazing and my WiFi, internet and LAN are all blazingly fast.

Apart from one laptop I use regularly which still runs Windows XP for a specific bit of software I absolutely cannot live without.

imapterodactyl · 21/04/2023 18:52

My OH is a tradie and the state of our house is embarrassing. It's clean and tidy thanks to me but painting is unfinished, unworking things in various rooms etc. I 'joke' that I'm going to hire a handyman to get everything done which he gets offended by. One day I'm going to actually do it. It seems he can only get things done to a good standard if he's being paid for it.

I’m an accountant and my DH will likely lose his personal allowance this tax year through poor planning.

shivawn · 21/04/2023 18:54

I'm a cardiology nurse and eat far far too much salt.

My husband is a pretty successful accountant but absolutely useless when it comes to personal finance.

But of a dark turn, but I knew a social worker who abused her own child and the child was taken off her and her H

I'm a vegetarian who worked in a slaughter house. I didn't know if was coming or going.

Doobydoo · 21/04/2023 19:03

Brilliant reassuring thread😀I am an ex nurse and now work on Support Line for people with a terminal illness. I still don't have a will or life insurance. Not good really.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/04/2023 19:08

I’m married to a very senior techie whose advice to me is usually “Restart it” or “I think we should get you a Mac.”

I run a food bank and bend over backwards to adhere to BB and UB dates at work. At home it’s very much sniff it / hope for the best / sure it’s fine / scrape the mould off the jam type.

PetitPorpoise · 21/04/2023 19:09

I'm a teacher and I do take my children's education very seriously but I don't really 'teach' them things, or do flashcards or anything like that.

Though I am a parent, I do not parent myself. I stay up too late on screens, eat too much junk and don't get enough fresh air.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/04/2023 19:16

I’m a Probation Officer and I don’t commit crimes, so I suppose I do follow my own advice 😂.

If I ever ask for tech help he usually tells me it's a PICNIC error.

I'm a cleaner.

I hate cleaning when anyone else is at home so only do the essentials (dishes/laundry) some days. I LOVE and actually look forward to having the house to myself, getting up first thing and straight into a full house deep clean. Come Friday-Monday when everyone is at home for the weekend... It's like a tornado has hit.
Catch me on a Tuesday afternoon though and you'd think my house was always pristine, I'd pass a white glove test almost anywhere (until the kids come home!)

fancyfrogs · 21/04/2023 19:20

Nurse and definitely don't take my own advice. Helpful when it comes to kids/dh etc, but never do anything myself that I know I should!

OnMyWayToSenility · 21/04/2023 19:22

I run my own business and the things I make do not appear in my home, but if they do they are falling apart and look shit... even though what I make look and get glowing reviews ( for ref I make them better for my clients than I do for me)

Paulisexcluded · 21/04/2023 19:23

Physics technician who gave herself an electric shock at home at least twice.

I’m an accountant and my husband does my tax return to avoid the fines.
