Is there anyone in the UK remotely excited about the coronation?

It was vaguely on my radar as DF is taking DS to watch a football match on the extra bank holiday. But I’ve just realised it’s only a couple of weeks away and I’ve not had a single ‘doing anything special?’ conversation. There are a few token flags about, but no real sense of impending excitement that something special is happening.

We aren’t big royalists but live in an area of the country that probably has more royal family fans than most. It wouldn’t normally be an event we would get excited about but previously, local town and villages have had lots of events to mark jubilees, royal weddings etc.

Anyone else noticed how low key the coronation seems to be? Has the shine worn off the royal family with the demise of the Queen? Has the cost of living situation taken the joy out of folk? Or maybe I just don’t go to the right places to share in the royalist excitement?

Not interested at all. Am pleased about the bank holiday though.

It feels a bit grotesque in the middle of a cost of living crisis with half the NHS striking

I’m not excited at all. But come to any small town in Norfolk and it seems everyone is excited (except me and my little family). Keep overheating lots of older people talking about parties / buying decorations for the coronation etc etc.

If there are any local community events for kids that weekend, I might take DD. But I have no interest in the coronation myself.

No, for me the Queen was the last of the Royals. I like a bit of pageantry and can't get excited about a spinach and broad bean quiche.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 21/04/2023 14:36

Yes. For the day off. HTH.

😆 I bet! My parents are in Norfolk and dad is under strict orders from mum to keep his opinions regarding the royal family to himself in all circumstances.

I'm quite looking forward to watching such an historic event with my kids but agree with pp about it seeming out of place with the rest of us struggling to make ends meet.

I think bunting etc will go up the week approaching

What’s contributing to the overall feeling of ‘meh’? Cost of living? Charles being a bit of a dud? People too busy? Post-covid ennui?

😆❤️ that did make me laugh. We are originally from London but we love Norfolk and are so glad we moved here. It’s very set in its ways!

SwapTheYforaD · 21/04/2023 14:40

Also the whole sourness of Harry and M.

People are sick of them. Probably spilling over to the whole royal family

I’m glad you love it. I love it too 🙂 Dad is also set in his ways. But they are quite different to everyone else’s in the village! He is keen to communicate the fact that North Norfolk was once a hotbed of socialist activity and the head of the NFU lived there. He blames ‘incoming boomers’ for the shift blue-wards. He’s also bern told to keep that opinion to himself!

I feel it’s time to phase out the Royal Family. Also, it feels crass to spend public money on such lavish celebrations during a cost of living crisis.

I’m not excited, but I am interested in it up to a certain point (the history of it all, first one I’ve been around for)

There are lots of street parties going on locally, our little close is having one - which we will go to, but more for a chance to have a bbq, a few drinks and a chat with my neighbours (we all get on reasonably well)

JamSandle · 21/04/2023 14:43

I am!

DiscoBeat · 21/04/2023 14:45

I think it Will be interesting to watch - like most I've not seen a coronation before. We went to see the Crown Jewels a year or so ago so it will be good to see them used.
But I didn't like Charles' treatment of Diana and I'm not a royalist either so I'm not majorly excited about it.

ehb102 · 21/04/2023 14:46

We're having tea and cake in our village. Tea and cake and bunting. Parish Council is paying, local charity is making the cakes, everyone is helping with the bunting. We are looking forward to having something positive happening.

maxelly · 21/04/2023 14:48

I don't know, I'm quite looking forward to it, in a mild sort of way. Not saying it's going to be the best day of my life or anything. It's a once every couple of decades at most thing, gentle fun to enjoy some pomp and ceremony whilst giggling at the silliness of it all, and it's nice that things like a royal wedding or coronation have an intergenerational appeal, can bring granny and kids together and all that. I don't think you need to be a full on flag waving royalist to gain some enjoyment from a parade with horses and fancy outfits and patriotic singing on the telly and a buffet tea/picnic after which is what we're planning. And there's an extra bank holiday which is always a win. We can all go back to thinking the monarchy is outdated and stupid the second the telly's off, no need for everything to be totally doom and gloom all the time.

-Dons hard hat

-Awaits flaming!

Cherryana · 21/04/2023 14:49

Not interested

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 21/04/2023 14:51

I’m afraid I’m underwhelmed by it all.

ButterflyBitch · 21/04/2023 14:53

I’m excited for the day off. That’s it really.

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 21/04/2023 14:54

No not at all, zero interest.
I do not follow the Royal Family in any way, shape or form.
I'm working thankfully on the day of the coronation.

Vinorosso74 · 21/04/2023 14:54

I'm certainly not. I would like to see an end to the royal family. Extra bank holiday is good though!
All the money being spent on it when the NHS, schools and various public services aren't properly funded isn't right.

TheFlis12345 · 21/04/2023 14:56

Loads of streets in our village have applied for road closures so they can hold street parties which will be fun. How many people actually care about the Coronation itself vs. It being an excuse for a party remains to be seen.

xogossipgirlxo · 21/04/2023 14:56

We will be out as Saturday is our only day off together. I won't be watching it, that's for sure, I will look at the pictures later on. I can't say I'm ignoring it, but won't be sitting in front of telly or celebrating in some way.

MrsApplepants · 21/04/2023 14:57

Happy for the day off. Couldn’t give a shit about the coronation though.
