Is there anyone in the UK remotely excited about the coronation?

It was vaguely on my radar as DF is taking DS to watch a football match on the extra bank holiday. But I’ve just realised it’s only a couple of weeks away and I’ve not had a single ‘doing anything special?’ conversation. There are a few token flags about, but no real sense of impending excitement that something special is happening.

We aren’t big royalists but live in an area of the country that probably has more royal family fans than most. It wouldn’t normally be an event we would get excited about but previously, local town and villages have had lots of events to mark jubilees, royal weddings etc.

Anyone else noticed how low key the coronation seems to be? Has the shine worn off the royal family with the demise of the Queen? Has the cost of living situation taken the joy out of folk? Or maybe I just don’t go to the right places to share in the royalist excitement?

Can't even pretend to care.

LawksaMercyMissus · 21/04/2023 20:29

What coronation?

The French had the right idea…

The French are obsessed with UK royalty! I live in France and had condolence emails for the deaths of both Phil and Liz. The neighbours watched the funerals, I didn't 😳

What am I supposed to be excited about? Staying at home and watching it on the telly? It’s not like I’m invited. All it means is I have to do an extra day of childcare because the schools are closed on the Monday. And DH will be off work so I’ll have to put up with him too.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 21/04/2023 20:41

I run my own business and will be working as a normal Monday. If that bloke wants to play dressing up in a shiny hat that's fine, it doesn't need me to waste time watching it. I'm meeting a friend for a nice day out.

I don't know anyone who is interested and haven't noticed anything in the shops.

Fucking hell no we are not we think it is bonkers

LawksaMercyMissus · 21/04/2023 20:48

@AuxArmesCitoyens just my neighbours then!

There’s been a lot of big royal events recently - the platinum jubilee, the Queen’s funeral and now the coronation in the space of less than a year. I can’t get enough of this sort of stuff for some reason (despite thinking they are overprivileged and out of touch) but can appreciate that for anyone sane, interest must have waned some time ago.

CosyFanTucci · 21/04/2023 20:52

Bread and circuses isn’t it? Interesting reading this week in the Guardian about all the gifts to the state that have been squirrelled away by the family. It’s a racket but the simpletons seem to enjoy all the shiny stuff.

LadyLolaRuben · 21/04/2023 20:53

No. Im done with them. Charles is in post end of. No need to have all this stupid ceremony palaver.

The royal pr team people who keep starting enthusiastic RF threads will be excited. Probably not those who remember a 30-odd year old man marrying an acquaintance he'd met a dozen times who was two weeks out of her teens. Or those who recall tampongate Confused

What is it about personal calls being hacked and then the contents released to the general public that puts you off the coronation rather than feeling empathy with the victim?

Like a PP I’m mildly interested in the frocks and rocks but not really the people wearing them. The petulant whining from Harry about how terrible they all seem to find their over privileged lives has taken the shine off a bit.

DaisyDaisyDooo · 21/04/2023 21:12

I'm going to be there.
I'm a socialist republican.
But I work for a Royal charity so we have seats.
I can't say I'd watch it otherwise.
But am interested to see it from a historical perspective I guess. And looking forward to a few glasses of fizz!

Gosh reading that back I sound terribly confused! 🤣

SwapTheYforaD · 21/04/2023 14:40

Also the whole sourness of Harry and M.

People are sick of them. Probably spilling over to the whole royal family

Agreed.

Their behaviour {and Andrew's} has cheapened the entire thing.

Tawdry and low~rent.

Obscene/ridiculous to have a King in 2023, let alone the grotesque expense when people are struggling to feed themselves. I don’t wish him ill - he seems a nice enough guy - but it all just feels wrong.

LabradorsByTheSea · 21/04/2023 14:38

What’s contributing to the overall feeling of ‘meh’? Cost of living? Charles being a bit of a dud? People too busy? Post-covid ennui?

All of those possibly plus I'd rather the money spent on the coronation be donated to food banks instead. It's rather obscene to spend so much money on this activity whether or not you like the royals or totally indifferent. 🌹

newjobnewstartihope · 21/04/2023 22:28

I'm going to London with a friend. I realise it will be chaos and we prob won't see anything but we could then pop into the shops while the chaos is happening outside
Just an excuse for a trip out really

JupiterFortified · 21/04/2023 22:31

I’m looking forward to watching it :) love all the pomp and pageantry

TurquoiseDress · 21/04/2023 22:39

I am excited about the extra bank holiday- thank you your Majesty!

Cocochai · 21/04/2023 23:04

Not interested but plenty of people will flock to London to line the streets / tune in on the tv despite what the polls indicate.

It might have been better received by the public if the Royals footed the bill themselves when many ordinary people are experiencing degrees of hardship.

NickEccles · 21/04/2023 23:29

Zero interest here I'm afraid? Wtf do we need a king for anyway? Obscene amounts of public money frittered away on those parasites! Poor old Charlie Boy looks & seems so old already & he seems barely interested in playing the royal game! I've thought the lot of them should've been disbanded years ago!! A complete farce when there are folk desperate & worried about the current situation 😡 😡 😡

SarahAndQuack · 21/04/2023 23:51

Nope. I don't think I will get the days off, which is fine with me. It's boring and it's been said, but I just don't think it is right to spend so much money when so many people are struggling. Imagine if Charles had said, ok, it'll be a quiet event and we'll donate the costs. He'd have been adored. Instead, it seems he's entirely unaware.

SophiaSW1 · 21/04/2023 23:58

My children are really excited about it. I'm not sure why but I've been going along with it and buying lots of decorations and stuff!

Jason118 · 22/04/2023 00:04

I just hate it when my money gets wasted.

TennisWithDeborah · 22/04/2023 00:13

The extravagance is very distasteful.
