Is there anyone in the UK remotely excited about the coronation?

It was vaguely on my radar as DF is taking DS to watch a football match on the extra bank holiday. But I’ve just realised it’s only a couple of weeks away and I’ve not had a single ‘doing anything special?’ conversation. There are a few token flags about, but no real sense of impending excitement that something special is happening.

We aren’t big royalists but live in an area of the country that probably has more royal family fans than most. It wouldn’t normally be an event we would get excited about but previously, local town and villages have had lots of events to mark jubilees, royal weddings etc.

Anyone else noticed how low key the coronation seems to be? Has the shine worn off the royal family with the demise of the Queen? Has the cost of living situation taken the joy out of folk? Or maybe I just don’t go to the right places to share in the royalist excitement?

Looking forward to the extra bank holiday. Not interested in the royals generally or the coronation

Hbh17 · 21/04/2023 16:30

I'm really looking forward to watching the Coronation on TV. So important to mark the continuation of 1000 years of history, too.

Berlinlover · 21/04/2023 16:31

I live in Ireland and have booked the day off work to watch it.

I’m looking forward to a nice long bike ride. Our street is having a street party but I think they are struggling to get anyone to help organise it. I’m not a royalist, though I had some respect for the queen, but I think Charles is a bit of a pompous dick and have no interest in seeing him sitting on a golden chair and getting a big golden hat.

Weepingwillows12 · 21/04/2023 16:38

I am pretty ambivalent about the royals. Don't hate them or love them. I think it will be interesting to watch the coronation but I am not doing anything special for it .

MyMachineAndMe · 21/04/2023 16:38

I'm looking forward to going out in the lash with my sisters and their adult children on the extra bank holiday.
On the preceding few days in looking forward to taking some photos of local events.
I'm looking forward to hopefully getting the chance to do some coronation related activities with any of the schools I may work in.
I'm looking forward to an excuse for a party. I love a good party. And cake. And booze.

GP75 · 21/04/2023 16:39

Am going on holiday 👍

greyhairnomore · 21/04/2023 16:56

Nope. I'll be away thankfully.

sashagabadon · 21/04/2023 16:57

I’m not “ excited” but I am looking forward to it and will go up to London to see it ( or whatever I can)

It just feels so crass and outdated to spend money on a party for a rich man, to make him ruler of a country by divine right.
There are children starving and freezing.

Divine Right was abolished in the Glorious Revolution of 1688

The Coronation has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with that defunct concept

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 21/04/2023 17:11

I wish I was away; I can’t summon up any enthusiasm although maybe I will half watch it for the outfits and pageantry?
To me it’s an obscene amount of money being indulged upon the richest people in the country.

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/04/2023 17:16

No. The whole thing would be anachronistic even in "normal" times but whilst a record number of families are on the breadline and the NHS and the education system are on their knees I really don't think it's the right time for an ostentatious celebration.

Frith2013 · 21/04/2023 17:20

I don't even know what day it's on

So you don't even know there's going to be a Bank Holiday?

I mean, there's not really caring (fair enough) but missing info on things which have an impact is unfortunate

Yes, I knew there was a BH.

I just don't know when. I'm a lone parent to a disabled child so it makes no odds to me. And obviously the RF should be abolished.

UsingChangeofName · 21/04/2023 17:28

Not sure 'excited' is the word I would use, but yes, I am looking forward to it.

I love a bit of pageantry and I love the history and the details of things you learn when watching these big events.
I think it is a big moment in history for most British and Commonwealth countries, and of course, all the millions of people around the world who are interested in our Royal Family and the traditions and pageantry.

I also know of lots of parties / events / celebrations that are happening. There are 4 that I have been invited to, and I have seen others on local FB groups and actually on paper notices in supermarkets, inviting people to join in. I live in a big, multicultural city and there is lots going on.
Absolutely fine if you aren't interested, but I think you'll find lots and lots of people are. I do find that threads on MN don't generally reflect the Community spirit that is alive and kicking in so many ways, in my world.

Joystir59 · 21/04/2023 17:30

Couldn't care less about Charles and Camilla, specifically, being crowned, but I love a ceremonial royal event and am throwing a small viewing party

CosyFanTucci · 21/04/2023 17:35

The whole notion of a random special family is ridiculous. How about giving someone else a turn? Or a Border collie of above-average intelligence. But I accept that it's probably a better bet than electing a president at the moment.
I've no idea when the bank holiday is.

getafringenotbotox · 21/04/2023 17:39

No interest except to see who attends and who wears what.

HouseofHolbein · 21/04/2023 17:40

I'm working all weekend. Tend to have to work bank holidays.

CluelessHamster · 21/04/2023 17:44

I'm definitely planning on watching it on the telly but out of interest rather than any great excitement! Definitely won't be attending any events but I'm a boring old introverted fart anyway so nothing out of the ordinary for me!

My mum has had a go at the quiche 😁

MrsSweatyBetty · 21/04/2023 17:48

I think it's bizarre that most people seem to blithely accept that we live under the control of a monarchy & yet we lecture other countries about democracy.

The death of Queen Elizabeth was a good opportunity to scrap the whole thing

I will avoiding it.

Interestingly, where I live (urban, middle class, south) there appears to have been a backlash against the Jubilee 'parties' which appears to mean that no-one dares organize anything for the coronation, so some progress at least.

Hawkins003 · 21/04/2023 17:49

katmarie · 21/04/2023 15:10

I'm not excited about it. I think it's an obscene waste of money which could be put to better use, and I doubt Charles being king will have any substantial positive impact on my life or the life of my children. I struggle to see the benefit to the country as a whole to be honest. That sounds very negative I suppose, but there we are.

It's a small investment vs long term gain via tourism etc

moonspiral · 21/04/2023 17:49

I'll probably watch it and maybe have a trifle or something

Username917778 · 21/04/2023 17:53

Looking forward to a day off with my kids and that is it.
