Is there anyone in the UK remotely excited about the coronation?

It was vaguely on my radar as DF is taking DS to watch a football match on the extra bank holiday. But I’ve just realised it’s only a couple of weeks away and I’ve not had a single ‘doing anything special?’ conversation. There are a few token flags about, but no real sense of impending excitement that something special is happening.

We aren’t big royalists but live in an area of the country that probably has more royal family fans than most. It wouldn’t normally be an event we would get excited about but previously, local town and villages have had lots of events to mark jubilees, royal weddings etc.

Anyone else noticed how low key the coronation seems to be? Has the shine worn off the royal family with the demise of the Queen? Has the cost of living situation taken the joy out of folk? Or maybe I just don’t go to the right places to share in the royalist excitement?

It just feels so crass and outdated to spend money on a party for a rich man, to make him ruler of a country by divine right.
There are children starving and freezing.

megletthesecond · 21/04/2023 15:35

I am. I do like a bit of pomp.
I'll be doing parkrun as quick as I can then hogging the main TV for a couple of hours.
No street parties round here.

ifancyajamdonut · 21/04/2023 15:36

I'm anti royal and still got my 'Anarchy in the U.K' t.shirt. BUT having said that to all those who like the royals, the pomp and other related things, I hope you have a great day! 😊

I'm glad to be flying out on 6/5. It was booked before the queen died, but as a republican, it is fortuitous.

SweetSakura · 21/04/2023 14:30

Not interested at all. Am pleased about the bank holiday though.

It feels a bit grotesque in the middle of a cost of living crisis with half the NHS striking

This. Couldn’t give a shit and don’t know any one who could.

RainyReadingDay · 21/04/2023 15:37

We'll be watching it on tv and the day after there's a party in our local park, which we'll go to.

Always4Brenner · 21/04/2023 15:37

I’ll watch on tv for history aspect and I’m looking forward to the buffet we’re doing here.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/04/2023 15:38

I wouldn't say I was excited but I am quite looking forward to watching it. I love a bit of pomp. Then afterwards we are having a bit of a party in our street. It will be fun.

the80sweregreat · 21/04/2023 15:46

They don't do anything here as they cant close our road as it's a bus route , too long and nobody seems that interested.
For the jubilee in 1977 , the people over the back to me on my council estate had a big party , but they couldn't invite everyone and I wasn't allowed to go :( I've had a grudge against such things ever since. (Even though it was 46 years ago! )
The people over the back where I live now have a big street party , but I don't know them.
I'm destined to never go to any Royal things it seems!

slowquickstep · 21/04/2023 15:48

Yes i am excited. Full list of events planned. Flags and bunting have been ironed, champagne bought.

Coffeeandbourbons · 21/04/2023 15:50

No although I might tune in for ten minutes on TV just as a ‘moment in history’ thing. But honestly it’s so at odds with the mood of the country at the moment it feels quite odd

newrubylane · 21/04/2023 15:53

Cattenberg · 21/04/2023 14:43

I feel it’s time to phase out the Royal Family. Also, it feels crass to spend public money on such lavish celebrations during a cost of living crisis.

But a lot of money would also have been spent on Elizabeth's coronation in 1952. Seven years post-war and with rationing still in force.

Stillwearingskinnys · 21/04/2023 15:53

oh I am!!!!

We are having a huge street party 😄.

Taken the week off to organise and prepare. I have so many ideas for food and drinks to keep adults and kids happy.

Games are organised and everything!

The neighbours can’t wait, we are all so excited.

🙄, joking 😂. Couldn’t care less apart from dp gets a day off. Sadly it’s my day off anyway.

tbh I keep forgetting we have a king, I still think we have a queen somewhere inside me

Topseyt123 · 21/04/2023 15:54

I'll be interested to watch it on TV as I have never seen one before, and I will.

However, I can't actually say that I am really excited about it. It will be interesting at the time.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/04/2023 15:55

@Landndialamrhf , er, he’s not by any stretch of the imagination ‘ruler of the country’. Perhaps you were mistaking him for a previous Charles who thought he ruled by divine right and had his head chopped off.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/04/2023 15:57

I’m excited for the parade as my brother is in the army and is in it! But other than that I couldn’t give a crap!

CordyLines · 21/04/2023 15:57

Mildly interested (from a frock and jewel viewpoint) but not excited at all. That about sums it up for me.

TonTonMacoute · 21/04/2023 15:58

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm excited, but I am looking forward to watching it..

Frankly I'm so fucking bored of this country being so down on itself the whole time. Right back to all the botching and moaning about leading up to the 2012 Olympics - everyone saying it's going to be a disaster and the worst Olympics ever, and what a waste of money.

ExtremelyDetermined · 21/04/2023 16:00

I'm mildly looking forward to it, I like a bit of pomp and ceremony and watching historical
moments unfold. We don't have a street party planned yet but there probably will be a little one as there was for VE Day and the Platinum Jubilee (we don't need a road closure as we have a large grassy area to use). We'll put up our bunting too.

Divebar2021 · 21/04/2023 16:02

I’m working for it ( as are all my colleagues ) and for days beforehand so looking forward to my overtime payment for that. I know someone who’s just finished a 5 year stint working for HM and is going to the coronation as a guest so I’m looking forward to hearing about it. It’s a fairly monumental day and would watch it if I wasn’t working.

ShipSpace · 21/04/2023 16:05

We are having all the family round to watch the service on the big screen in our TV room, and then will have an afternoon tea at home (hopefully in the garden).

Big street party with food, music, and entertainers planned for the Sunday.

dessyh · 21/04/2023 16:13

The royal pr team people who keep starting enthusiastic RF threads will be excited. Probably not those who remember a 30-odd year old man marrying an acquaintance he'd met a dozen times who was two weeks out of her teens. Or those who recall tampongate Confused

EllandRd · 21/04/2023 16:15

No and no one I know gives a toss. Working anyways but they have not gaged public opinion very well have they?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 21/04/2023 16:16

I am so over the Royal Family. Don't want to watch, even for history purposes, but then I didn't watch the Queen's funeral! It's all so slow, pompous and I fundamentally disagree with it so to listen to the sycophantic commentators and people fawning over them is just too awful. Even the coverage of the Queen wasn't balanced (she was a great Queen in many ways but other things were not great about her reign, the Commonwealth). I feel embarrassed, like watching the Emperor's New Clothes or something, but obviously others don't feel the same way and I'm happy they are watching and having parties!

Always4Brenner · 21/04/2023 16:17

I won’t be watching the concert though I’ll find documentaries to watch
