Is there anyone in the UK remotely excited about the coronation?

It was vaguely on my radar as DF is taking DS to watch a football match on the extra bank holiday. But I’ve just realised it’s only a couple of weeks away and I’ve not had a single ‘doing anything special?’ conversation. There are a few token flags about, but no real sense of impending excitement that something special is happening.

We aren’t big royalists but live in an area of the country that probably has more royal family fans than most. It wouldn’t normally be an event we would get excited about but previously, local town and villages have had lots of events to mark jubilees, royal weddings etc.

Anyone else noticed how low key the coronation seems to be? Has the shine worn off the royal family with the demise of the Queen? Has the cost of living situation taken the joy out of folk? Or maybe I just don’t go to the right places to share in the royalist excitement?

Our street is having a few little things on the afternoon on the field behind the houses- a bake-off competition where everyone eats the cakes afterwards, a dressing up competition for the children, egg and spoon races and a picnic.

Not sure if we are going or not yet.

Also the whole sourness of Harry and M.

People are sick of them. Probably spilling over to the whole royal family

This and Charles announcing the slavery review and his tendency to fail to keep out of politics unlike his excellent mother.
I used to be a bit anti when younger but now see no reason to think an elected politician would be any better. The smooth way he took over as soon as she died was quite impressive but he needs to learn to keep out of politics.

Other than the day off (which will cost the country) will not give it any thought. The whole concept of Royalty, born into riches and leeching off the population for their obscene lifestyles is morally bereft.

Until a royal is physically working, grafting for long hours, for years, there’s no such thing as a ‘hard working royal’. Cutting ribbons and asking trite questions for 20 minutes isn’t fucking work, driven or flown there and back in luxury with idiots fawning over you. I’d have a modicum more tolerance if they funded ALL of it themselves, but they won’t. Any of it.

My Mum is excited !

She watched the last coronation on a TV bought for the occasion - in a room of neighbours. (It was an official celebration-there were shippams paste sandwiches.)

She is especially looking forward to hearing the music this time.

I’ve made the decision to be abroad on coronation day. I couldn’t give a rats arse about KC and QC.

My decision has nothing at all to do with Harry and Meghan.

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/04/2023 21:21

Not sure anyone is ‘excited’.
it’s not been that long since the Queen died - it’s seems a bit off to ‘celebrate’
and Charles and Camilla were adulterers (Diana was too but people conveniently forget that). Which a lot of people haven’t forgotten about.
he’s also upset the churchy folks as he wants to be the ‘defender of all faiths’- all good and noble except he’s now the head of the c of e - he’s about to vow to be the defender of THE faith They are not happy with him
plus Andrew and H+M and that circus
and then the money they’re spending while ordinary people are seriously struggling financially seems rather crass

What’s contributing to the overall feeling of ‘meh’? Cost of living? Charles being a bit of a dud? People too busy? Post-covid ennui?

I am older. Feel like I have seen it all before. Not an actual coronation though! But all the pagentry, people waving, catching glimpses of various royals, etc.

ssd · 23/04/2023 22:10

I think its the state of the nhs and almost everything else in this country just now. Why are we spending so much on this thing when people are missing out on decent care and decent lives. And decent pay.

Its depressing and demoralising all at once.

pilates · 23/04/2023 22:13

I’m looking forward to watching it on tv with family and a nice spread. I love all the pomp and pageantry - we do it so well. 🇬🇧

Farmerama1 · 23/04/2023 23:04

They don’t give a fuck that people are unable to heat their homes or afford good food. Don’t care if the plebs have a ruined NHS. The royals are laughing at us.

Lateliein · 24/04/2023 00:26

No
Fucking disgrace the amount that will be wasted on this big eared waste of space

Isoqueen · 24/04/2023 02:01

I don’t care about the royals but we will stay up late and watch the pageantry. You British do that so well, and it will be the last coronation in our lifetime, barring accidents,so we are getting together with a couple of family members, ordering pizzas, and gazing at the box. It starts around 8 pm here. Hope it’s a big one and they splash out!

EconomyClassRockstar · 24/04/2023 02:10

Viva la revolution! I admired the Queen a lot. Her eldest son, absolutely not. Or indeed, any of her sons. Charles has spent pretty much his entire time as PofW NOT behaving regally. It seems like a natural time for a country as a whole to at least have a conversation.

Nat6999 · 24/04/2023 03:46

Not one bit & I'm fed up of seeing all the coronation crap on shopping sites. Will be glad when it's all over.

charabang · 24/04/2023 04:43

I'm looking forward to watching a bit of pomp and pageantry. At the ripe old age of 56 it"s not likely I'll see William crowned. Thinking I might even put up a bit of bunting even if I am the only one that appreciates it.

DeadButDelicious · 24/04/2023 05:45

We're going out for the day to avoid it. In times gone by I was interested in the royals in a 'weddings and funerals' sort of way but over the years I've become more and more republican in my views and now I think we should get rid of the bloody lot of them.

We have people cold and starving in this country, an NHS on its knees, a government who don't know their arse from their elbow and we're expected to all clap like seals for some guy with a shiny hat? Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

CeriB82 · 24/04/2023 05:47

Im not excited about it, but ill watch it and make afternoon tea and enjoy the pageantry! I wont put up any flags though

TransparentVision · 24/04/2023 05:54

Not remotely interested in it at all. Couldn't give a damn. Such a waste of money when you have got the NHS on it's knees and many people in poverty struggling to survive. The money they waste on it could be much better used.

The French are obsessed with UK royalty! I live in France and had condolence emails for the deaths of both Phil and Liz. The neighbours watched the funerals, I didn't 😳

Err, no we are not!

darisdet · 07/05/2023 23:13

Not interested. Didn't watch.

HappyMe6 · 08/05/2023 17:41

Zero interest

TruthsAndALie · 08/05/2023 23:16

You don’t have to like it or even watch it but given the shit show that are most elected officials in this country, I’ll take my chance with the Royals. As Stephen Fry wisely said, an elected official wouldn’t represent the whole nation anyway in the same way the King doesn’t.
