Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Kucinghitam · 20/04/2023 20:05

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I've just come off a thread (the one about BACP) where I got thoroughly bruised. I foolishly put a comment on gleaned from a contact in Metanoia suggesting that there was more to the Esses essay than his side of the story, and have now obviously been declared persona non grata. However, I can't go into detail I don't have, and don't want to out the person who I asked about it, so I shouldn't have said anything at all.

MouseMinge · 30/05/2023 22:09

That house may be incredibly spacious and roomy but who could tell! I have a bit too much stuff, they have too much stuff and then decided to get too much more stuff to turn their home into something bordering on hoarding. Lovely dogs though. If I lived near there I'd go for a look around just to get in some quality dog bothering.

The wedding this weekend was really lovely. The legal wedding took place on Friday at Chelsea town hall. On Saturday we had a not-hen do, hen do which involved prosecco and making buttonholes with fresh flowers. The ceremony was beautiful and I cried. The house we were staying in - I've stayed there before - is so bloody lovely and the owners are so welcoming and friendly. They make their own apple juice which is made up of a variety of apples, not just one type and is so damned good that all other apple juice is ruined for me. It's sweet but with a real tang to it. They make 200 bottles a year and if I lived there that amount would last no more than a couple of months. The weather was beautiful, I loved what I was wearing and all in all it was a wonderful weekend.

Oh! and I was seated at the "top table" next to the bride (round table). It was mostly because they saw me as my friend Snoop's plus one even though I was invited in my own right but also because "Barbies". I've never been at a top table before. That almost made me cry too.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 30/05/2023 22:26

That sounds lovely, Mouse.

In very tangentially related (big old house) news, I've just watched an episode of the US version of Ghosts. Oh dear.

CyanCrystalViolet · 30/05/2023 23:37

That sounds fab @MouseMinge. And I love proper apple juice.

MouseMinge · 31/05/2023 02:06

I can't imagine a good American version. They're not so good at gentle comedy and that's the USP of Ghosts. I only started watching the most recent series after stumbling across the Christmas special and it's so gentle. Cave man is my favourite ghost.

MavisMcMinty · 31/05/2023 02:25

There is NOTHING quite like proper apple juice from proper apples, the weak tasteless stuff you buy in supermarkets is nothing like the real thing. Sooooo intense and appley! Hard bloody work though. My Dad bought us a small apple press years ago and it’s a lot of effort to get just a couple of hundred mls.

Oh dear! I haven't seen the thread, but it is practically a rite of passage on MN to have your arse thoroughly handed to you for some reason or another.

The really brutal topics are hygiene or food. Those, no matter what your position is, it will be Very Very Very Very Wrong.

@MouseMinge That sounds like a wonderful wedding!

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn There's a Ghosts thread in the TV topic although it is currently quiet. We're utterly Ghosts-obsessed in our house - we even went on the location tour dressed in self-designed T-shirts. Highly recommend the tour, by the way, if you're ever in Surrey.

What I would (cautiously) say about US Ghosts is that it improves after the first few episodes, when it stops copying (badly) the originals and starts striking out on its own new path.

The thing we all found utterly annoying was the way Everything. Is. Really. Really. Explained. In. Words. Of. One. Syllable. For. Dummies. Who. Can't. Take. Hints. Or. Clues. (e.g. the ghosts all repeatedly explain in detail how and when they died, every character is like a Supersize-turned-up-to-11-so-you-can't-miss-what-they're-meant-to-be version of themselves, each episode ends with a lovely emotional scene which is heralded with a crescendo of lovely emotional background music to make sure you know this is the lovely emotional scene).

That house, wow. I like a bit of hippy clutter but that place is rammed with it. Nice dogs, though.

@MouseMinge we were at a three day wedding too and all went very well, though I no longer cope easily with three late nights, two parties and hoards of noisy people all in one weekend. The ceremony was held outside in a hotel garden, with the happy couple in a rustic open-sided shack and the guests sitting outside. It dragged on a bit and my mind started wandering. I looked at the huge lawn, the surrounding trees, considered the warmth and stillness of the day and then thought 'This is perfect bee swarm weather'. I could see it all so clearly - the long train of approaching bees flying at rooftop height over the surrounding trees and long lawn, the increasingly loud buzzing as they neared. A truly spectacular sight, which I've been lucky enough to see a couple of times. Would they fly over or land? The shade and protection offered by the roof of the open hut where the B&G were playing out their ritual would be the perfect stopping-off point for them. The chaotic, noisy swirling mass would send bride, groom, registrars and guests into an arm-flailing, screaming panic and they'd all rush inside, while me and Mr T would stay outside to watch the bees settle. After that the scenario wasn't clear, whether the ceremony would continue at a distance or they'd have to reschedule, but it was an entertaining reverie, which I'm just slightly disappointed didn't play out for real.

And* *to get in all that exposition theyallhavetospeakreallyfastandnotleaveanypausesatall which really doesn't help the performances, or let the lines fall naturally. MrBint also pointed out that the UK living characters play it pretty straight (actually, I think many of the ghosts do too) whereas in the US version they are all Performing A Sitcom. All the time.

Very wearing.

I'll give it a couple more episodes, but I'm not hopeful.

CyanCrystalViolet · 31/05/2023 12:35

That’s a lot of house!

I don’t have the ££ to buy anything other than shared ownership, at least not in the SE. I’d love to move out of the area entirely but I wouldn’t know anyone and worry about feeling isolated. Unfortunately most shared ownership properties are characterless new builds, although this means you’re less likely to have to replace the roof/kitchen/bathroom which is important as despite only owning x share, you’re liable for 100% of the costs. It’s a rubbish scheme really but the only way a lot of people can buy.

CyanCrystalViolet · 31/05/2023 12:44

And don’t even get me started on the service charge 😳 service charge on a flat can easily exceed £250 per month.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 31/05/2023 12:47

That Mayo house does look good value. And lots of garden.

artant · 31/05/2023 13:14

That Mayo house could be gorgeous with a bit of money spent on it.

Britinme · 31/05/2023 13:30

Re "Ghosts" - I haven't seen the British version but have seen a few episodes of the American one, which is mildly amusing. I find very few American comedies as funny as British ones, and American TV totally sucks at mixing comedy and drama the way British TV can. We only watch stuff on streaming except for PBS, which we can see live, but we have BritBox and Acorn. I also have UK Entertainment, which only has a few channels of interest now BBC has backed out of it, and has the disadvantage of only being on live so the times rarely suit us. We can get YouTube on the TV though, and we get our fix of Have I Got News For You on that.

duc748 · 31/05/2023 13:50

Westport is lovely.

Kucinghitam · 31/05/2023 14:08

Lovely house @DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry, with a bit of sympathetic updating it would be fabulous!

I highly recommend UK Ghosts if you can find a way to watch it @Britinme - everything about it is just... <chef's kiss>. Also it is another source of silly quotes ChezKuc.

@Kucinghitam - I can fire up the VPN and watch it on iPlayer or one of the other channel websites. Which channel is it on?

Kucinghitam · 31/05/2023 14:26

@Britinme It'll hopefully still be on iPlayer. I never quite understand the schedule by which the BBC add or delete non-current programmes from iPlayer.

Four series on iPlayer. We've never watched it, must give it a go.

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/05/2023 14:35

Yes! It's brilliant. Just really gentle, silly and warmhearted.

artant · 31/05/2023 15:11

Ghosts has passed me by completely. I must give it a go!

lucicle · 31/05/2023 17:29

I rather like the hippy house. The photo selection is baffling, though!
