Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

The queue for passport control with kids at Heathrow arrivals. 2 hours wait in a boiling hot immigration hall on Friday just gone. Only a couple of family counters open despite lots of staff milling around doing nowt and a massive queue full of distressed small children. No concessions for my disabled dd who was made to stand for 2 hours with no assistance allowed. Meanwhile adults without kids sail through the e-gates.

I've no clue why they don't let kids use the e gates (ok, really small ones can't, but plenty could manage it) or why they don't just bloody open more counters. It's a disgrace.

Oh come off it, nobody wants to sit next to the fat person on a plane. People who cannot fit into an airline seat should not be denied the option of travelling, but they should expect to book and pay for two seats.

Yeah fat people shouldn't be allowed a holiday and we all know they get paid so much money that they can afford two seats.

Have a little compassion for god sake. I'd rather sit next to the fattest person on the plane than someone who thinks like you.

There was a woman in the paper a couple of days ago, who was enormously fat and needed two seats and an extender seatbelt. If you were next to her, you really would be squashed. A lot of people are overweight, but nobody really needs to be that size.

Airlines charge per seat, so if people need two, they should pay, as far as I see it. I was stuck on a flight for 4 hours, next to a bloke who must have weighed over 30 stone and it was bloody awful, as his arm and flab were on me, forcing me into the bulkhead, I was pushed over at an angle and ended up with back strain.

Fluffypuppy1 · 18/04/2023 08:48

Urgh!!! I read the link, and the dad gleefully posts that the airline are “dealing with the flight attendant”. What an arsehole. Sadly out of the comments, quite a few agreed that his wife shouldn’t have had to clean up after their kids. ☹️

It's not really a big deal. If you cannot fit into the seat provided, you pay for two seats and factor it into the cost of the holiday, just as you would any other special requirement. No judgement, just practicalities. And holidays abroad, whilst lovely to have, are not exactly a basic human right.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 17/04/2023 17:43

You're not allowed to do this. Security will tell you your electronics and liquids must be in a separate tray from your bag and also your coat.

I think what @FrangipaniBlue meant is that you amalgamate all your trays once through security and sort yourself out in a booth. This is much better than blocking the conveyer while you try to put everything away

NoDecorIdea · 18/04/2023 10:01

"Flight attendants aren't allowed to help you pt bags overhead. They're not paid until the plane doors closed - so if they're injured before that the airline isn't liable and they're left without injury pay."

That's not strictly true of all airlines, in as much as some of us are paid long before the doors close. However, we are told not to lift bags and we are not insured to do so. If we injure ourselves lifting a passenger bag the company will just say we shouldn't have done it. That said, if it's a little old lady with a bag no heavier than mine I'll do it. If it's a little old lady with a bag that weighs a tonne ill usually do it with a colleague. On the other hand, if it's a youngish, fit and healthy customer, in any cabin, nope - you pack it, you stack it!

AffIt · 18/04/2023 10:04

I travel a lot for work and used to get very wound up at airports, but I'm trying to be a bit more zen these days.

However, the one thing that will never fail to rile me is when people don't return their trays to the droppy-down thing after security and either leave them lying around (grrr) or still on the belt (double grrr).

I suspect they are also the sort of people who don't return shopping trollies in supermarkets and tip badly in restaurants.

I think they should have dealt with it by black listing the family and not telling the bastards.

I hate that, too and they're often the people a PP mentioned, who don't move down the roller bit, so that other people can get their stuff out. I had a couple doing that a while ago and I asked them to move down. The woman said,

"Just wait your turn." I explained that it was holding other people up and then shoved their trays along, they got angry and the security told them to move to the end. Twats.

Thought of another couple:

That there is no check on what carry on people are taking onboard. People arrive with a wheelie bag, hand bag and rucksack (or similar variations) and shove it all in the over head lockers and I end up with no legroom because my rucksack has to go under the seat. If checks were done to stop the CFs taking the kitchen sink into the cabin, there would be enough space for everyone. Ditto those who sit there ignoring the repeated announcements to not put their coats in the overhead bins.

The snobby fuckers who think because you're dressed in baggy trousers and a t shirt you can't possibly be travelling in business. We collect Avios and book as far ahead in advance as possible so we often get business class flights for some avios and up to £100. But the last of those flights we went on, we were waiting to board in the priorty queue and someone came toward us, dressed for a flight on the 1950s, at speed actually bellowing to get out of their way because they were group 1. I told them so were we and turned my back. But seriously.

Clearly never flown Ryanair. They are extremely strict on the overhead luggage...

@CalpolDependant

You only have one lap baby.

When you have a child too and a husband that needs to work you end up with iPads, laptops, nappies, wipes, food, snacks, bottles, gro bags, blankets etc.

Oh whatever. I have 3 children. That’s one more than you, “second time mama” so by your own standards, I win.

What if they have to travel regularly for work?

Nobody needs to be a judgemental dick either but it happens just like some people are fat and some people are thin.

What if they have to travel regularly for work?

Then their work should pay for two seats. Not wanting to share your airline seat with someone else doesn’t make you a judgmental dick - otoh, expecting the person next to you to put up with your overhanging obese flesh makes you a selfish, inconsiderate dick.

Not wearing a mask.

The vast majority of travelers don't wear masks anymore as it's not mandatory. Are you going to continue wearing one in public for the rest of your life and expect the same from others??

What if they have to travel regularly for work?

Then their employer should pay for two seats or a wider seat in business class.

CordyLines · 19/04/2023 09:39

Regarding masks, I will wear one on a long flight so I can sleep/snooze without everyone seeing my tonsils and dribbling. 😂

lovelypidgeon · 19/04/2023 10:24

I quite regularly go on holiday with a relative who I can only conclude is playing some sort of secret 'irritating behaviour in the airport/flight' bingo. She will usually:

  • Get to the baggage check in desk and then decide that she's put something in her suitcase that she wants in her hand luggage (or vice-versa) and spend ages repacking both
  • Keep her passport etc at the bottom of her bag and refuse to stand to one side to get it out at security etc so everyone else has to wait
  • Insist that she definitely does not have any liquids in her bag and does not need a plastic bag. Then 'remembers' at when she gets to the end of the queue that she has perfume/hand cream etc
  • Queues to be one of the first on the plane, then when she gets to her seat (usually in one of the front rows) stands in the aisle whilst she very slowly organises her snacks/book/handbag/neck pillow etc. She seems oblivious to the fact that the rest if the passengers are queueing behind her huffing
  • Either a) does not bring any food with her and complains for the entire duration of the flight that the in-flight food is expensive and they don't have what she wanted or b) brings vast amounts of messy, smelly food with her (tuna sandwiches anyone?)
  • Always asks for a window seat then gets up to go to the toilet about every half an hour- usually including just as the other people in her row have just got hot drinks
  • Wants to chat non stop through the whole flight, even if it is a night flight and others are trying to sleep. Her chatter usually includes several stories of her friends' bad flying experiences
  • Stands up and so that she can have shouted conversations with other friends and family sitting elsewhere in the plane and asks other passengers to pass along food etc from her bag to them (see above re smelly food
In other aspects of life she is quite a nice person and we have tried to encourage her not to do some of this but it doesn't work. Travelling with with her really makes me cringe and I am very surprised that she has never been told to F off by someone. If any of you think you have encountered her please accept my apologies.
xogossipgirlxo · 19/04/2023 10:38

People blocking queues. They can get ready while waiting for security checks, but noooo, they start taking everything out while staff is waiting doing nothing and people queuing behind them are getting pissed off. The only exception for me are families with babies or very small children they need to carry. Same with passport control when people start looking for passport in front of staff. Could have been done before while 20 other people were queuing in front of you.

rookiemere · 19/04/2023 10:59

@lovelypidgeon that is one irritating relative!
I know that I go to the loo a lot, so always get an aisle seat unless it's an overnight flight and I plan to try to sleep.

SirChenjins · 19/04/2023 11:24

Oh yy to the endless toilet goers who drink the flight away. I’d limit them to one drink and one toilet visit for the entire flight as punishment.

There was no judgement in the post you quoted. It was fact and someone’s personal experience.

The fact that it involved someone who doesn’t fit comfortably in one plane seat doesn’t make it judgemental.
