Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Liverpool52 · 16/04/2023 12:35

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

Your fattist comments make me hope she lifted her "flabby" leg and farted in your face tbf.

Oh come off it, nobody wants to sit next to the fat person on a plane. People who cannot fit into an airline seat should not be denied the option of travelling, but they should expect to book and pay for two seats.

Basically, everything annoys me about Manchester airport, it's an absolute hell hole from start to finish. I try to avoid it as much as possible even though it's my closest! Other airports are so much nicer, friendlier, easier, etc. It really is the bottom of my list - I far prefer Liverpool, Leeds/Bradford or even Glasgow. I used to love Blackpool, despite the very limited range of flights - it was a travesty when they closed it. Even nearly all foreign airports are more pleasurable than Manchester. There's just something nasty about it - nasty security staff, nasty parking attendants, nasty passport control - it seems like a place where all the joy has been sucked out of it.

I've never been to a worse airport than Manchester. The disorganisation was off the scale. The checkin desk had the wrong destination above it, when we got there the thoroughly rude woman was like "this isn't for your destination." Me - OK so why it labelled as such? Woman - "take it up with someone else. I can't check you in here." Me - so...please could you tell me where I check in? Why are you sitting here if you're not checking in people to this destination when it says it above your head? Woman - stares at me in silence Me... where do I check in? Woman: shrug Then every single fucking bag was flagged going through, turns out the scanners were picking up lip balms as liquids.

The x-ray at security (Manchester) pulled out my young son's rucksack. After an eternity, a vile/nasty security guy finally picked it up and called us over (after having a lengthy chit-chat with a couple of others). He searched the bag and eventually decided it was a pork pie in my son's lunch box that the x-ray picked up as liquid (presumably the jelly in it). Then he went onto a rant about it, telling us we should have removed it from his lunchbox and put it in the tray separately, in a really nasty/snide manner. It really upset my son. Just completely unnecessary to be so vile for something so trivial.

People who seem surprised by the liquids rule, or food rules.....people who need to rush to get on a plane that ain't leaving until everyone at the gate is on anyway. People who can't share an armrest and see it as their personal property to passive aggressively defend until the end.........there's so many 😂

Food rules? What food rules??

Blueberrycreampie · 17/04/2023 12:30

We both checked in sizeable cases on a recent holiday. It would have been lovely just to wander around with a handbag but a) not leaving expensive electronics, jewellery, toiletries etc in a suitcase, and b) as we were joining a cruise we needed change of clothes, shoes etc as you don't see your cases again for several hours sometimes, so therefore had to take a hold-all as well. Luckily the plane had very roomy overhead lockers which could accommodate all the luggage.

Why do airports even sell alcohol
Its a bit daft when it causes so many issues to even serve alcohol if you don't want drunk people.

twilighteaser · 17/04/2023 13:12

Some Manchester Airport security staff are rude & aggressive. Treat everyone as if they are a criminal. Never experienced it in any other airport and I fly a lot, but I dread Manchester every time. We don't live in the UK and have no desire to, we have well paid jobs and a nice home in our EU country, which we have no intention of ever leaving! But they are convinced we want to stay forever everytime we set foot in there. I am British but I choose not to live there, they question my DH so much it's ridiculous. I swear they judge him on how he dresses (rocker).

Seeing people dressed like it's the middle of summer when flying to my EU country in Europe in December, where it's absolutely not hot one bit in December!

Groups early morning drinking and dreading they'll be on my flight.

People in flip flops. They are for the beach only, aren't they?

Farting on planes. Gross.

C0LO · 17/04/2023 13:16

Mine! Checking I've still got all the paperwork every 3.5 minutes for 2 hours gets very boring!

Because at many airports alcohol really doesn't cause "many issues".

Well, you probably should have put the lunch box through separately from your suitcase, as for all liquids, gels, and pastes.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2023 13:48

Once the 100ml rule for liquids etc is lifted I honestly believe things might start to make it all a bit less fraught ( maybe a little bit , anyway )
I live in hope , but many will be cheering and the airport staff can take home that big tube of confiscated goods and at least give the suntan lotion to homeless charities or do something with it worthwhile! ( not that I know what happens to the liquids etc they have taken off people for the last decade or whatever!)

ShakeYourFeathers · 17/04/2023 13:57

I was at Heathrow a few weeks ago. And I stupidly left my phone in my bag at security . Anyway the guy properly went through my bag. Fine don't have an issue with that. What I was a bit Blush was I was on my AF and I had enough towels for the long haul journey. Well the security guy thought they were nappies and asked if I had children and where were they whilst he was searching me bag... I just went no I don't have children

NorthernSoul55 · 17/04/2023 14:18

My partner, every time.
He's a nervous traveller and hates queueing anywhere, for anything. His finest hour was bursting into the ladies at Malaga airport to shout at me because the flight had just appeared on the departure board. I shouted back in front of several bemused women that I would never fly anywhere with him ever again.

JudgeRudy · 17/04/2023 14:31

Makewayforsummer · 17/04/2023 07:53

Then organise them before you leave the house. I have young children and I think it’s even more important to be organised so I don’t have to worry about trying to sort my bag and stop a toddler wandering off at the same time.

Well I guess it depends how long they're taking. Rummaging through 4 different bags is one thing. Opening up one bag/zip and removing say phone then a separate suitcase is organised to me. I don't think it's reasonable to have to have them (and your passport or boarding passes) out and ready to go.. There's a middle ground.

Just back from long haul flight in economy. Walked through premium economy to disembark, and couldn’t believe the mess the passengers had left. Seriously , it was a dump, whereas economy was really clean. You’ve paid extra for your seat , it doesn’t entitle you to be a messy pita and make life hard for the flight crew.

Me to, I've come from Australia via Dubai and at Newcastle, the business class was a fucking disgraceful dump.

I've flown business and 1st class a few times and am amazed at the lazy, arrogant shits, who throw absolutely everything on the cabin floor.

purplecorkheart · 17/04/2023 15:07

People who arrive late and want to skip the line at security who look at you and tell you importantly that they have a flight to catch.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 17/04/2023 15:27

People who remove your suitcase from the carousel thinking it’s theirs and then don’t bother to put it back on but just leave it on the floor. Which means me standing at the carousel while the cases get fewer and fewer and getting a sinking feeling that my luggage has been lost. Only to find it dumped over at the other side of the baggage hall. Inconsiderate selfish bastards.

On a recent flight I had a small backpack, tiny handbag, laptop, iPad, winter coat and boots (removed). It took up three trays. Sometimes there’s no option but to stand there scrabbling around for your stuff.

Nope. You quickly tip/pile all your stuff into 1 tray they carry that tray to the booth.

You're not allowed to do this. Security will tell you your electronics and liquids must be in a separate tray from your bag and also your coat.

I was annoyed just hearing about my elderly DPs flight within the UK to visit relatives a few years ago.

I recommended that they book something in the middle of the day to avoid security queues- they booked for the morning because it was slightly cheaper ( they have significant savings and good pensions).

Also told them to book a checked in bag to avoid having to lug it round the airport- again did not take my advice and booked a cabin bag only to save money, then complained that the air hostess wasn't very helpful about putting it in the overhead lockers Hmm.

They also complained at security that the attendants took them to one side because of DFs diabetes needles and DM seemed to think that the staff should be experts in diabetic requirements.

Oh and then on the way back, rather than leaving the car at ours so I could pick them up ( we live 10 miles from the airport) they got two buses to a park and ride where they had left the car half way ( because it was free) turning an hour's journey into a three hour one.

Mind you not as bad as my aunt ( again loaded with excellent pension) who took a flight via Heathrow rather than flying directly because it was £50 cheaper.

Flight attendants aren't allowed to help you pt bags overhead. They're not paid until the plane doors closed - so if they're injured before that the airline isn't liable and they're left without injury pay.

I didn't have to do that in Darwin and Perth, yesterday. I did in Newcastle, on the way out.

Flip flops are commonly worn footwear in many warm places, not just for the beach.

When I moved from South Africa (flip flop central) to Germany in the summer many years ago, I remember a hotel receptionist almost faint away at the sight of my flip flop shod feet on a sunny day.

Haven’t ever worn flip flops on a plane but think they would be easy to deal with through security and can’t see how they could offend anyone.

Ha ha, good one! Many years ago, I had my bag searched (not at an airport but going into a building, abroard). The guys on security had obviously never seen tampons before and looked very puzzled, they were looking at each other like "WTF is this?" I just stood and stared at them till they were done. Luckily they didn't ask, as my language skills for that country didn't include "tampon", and if they'd never heard of them anyway, well, I certainly wouldn't be explaining!

I think we are on the same page. Just out all the electronics inside on bag until you get through security.
