Just put it on to see protesters being dragged off the track. Feel bad for the horses in the ring, it looks warm and there's so many people about.

What "change"? Banning horse racing? Never going to happen.

It probably will but it will take time. The tide is already turning massively against dog racing as the truth becomes exposed. People used to think dog fighting / bear baiting were acceptable. Opinions change.

Of all the animals killed in this country, what percentage are racehorses?

What you should brle asking is how many racehorses are killed at race tracks every week in UK eg average is 220 per year with obviously some years being a lot higher. Please justify as that being acceptable?

Radi0noise · 15/04/2023 17:50

So I suppose the protesters spend the other 364 days of the year protesting outside abattoirs, butchers shops, fish and chip shops, McDonalds and the like? They don't just protest the Grand National because it's high profile and gets them lots of twitter likes?

It doesn't get any publicity, but yes they do

Why hate on people who care about stuff.

It's like the wanky middle aged men hating on Greta

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:50

Silly bored little protesters....good point, where are they the rest of the year?

Glued to the M25?

I'm not a big fan of the grand national but those so called animal loving protestors did more harm than good holding up the race like that. Horses are very temperamental animals and it is not good to keep them parading like that. They would have just been getting more and more het up by the delays. They will no doubt be patting themselves on the backs on how they exposed how dangerous the grand national is when actually, their stupid actions worked to make the race even more dangerous.

If you want to protest the grand national fine, but do it in a way that isn't harmful to animals otherwise you are defeating the objective.

It provides enjoyment for millions of people and employment for thousands of people.

'Lots of sport is dangerous' said the commentator. Yes but people can choose to do it knowing it's dangerous

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:54

Why did these people whom mumsnetters claim 'care', cause harm to the horses today intentionally??

They don't care one jot about horses. They just do it for attention, to feed their egos, to try to give their pathetic lives some meaning.

CremeEggThief · 15/04/2023 17:55

Exactly, RadiOnoise. I don't understand the contempt towards protestors on here or in the mainstream media in general.
They're passionate about a cause and they're doing what they feel is right, when most of the rest of us can't be bothered!

I don't support the Grand National, nor do I support the way protesters protest.
I am boycotting a local Grand National event because I don't agree with it.

And it isn't hot in Liverpool today.

PinkLemonadee · 15/04/2023 17:56

Gondala · 15/04/2023 17:41

Why? You said the grand national is fine.

I said racing is fine. I can think that and still be nervous about the loose horses.

I wasn’t aware they were the ones riding the horses - I must have missed that.

Bluebells1970 · 15/04/2023 17:57

I used to love watching racing until my Dad took my sister and I to a race meet. 4 horses were destroyed in 2 hours due to the going and I've never forgotten how distressing it was. We had a small stud farm at the time and ate/slept/breathed horses.

All those twats drinking, cheering and betting for a day out should be made to run that course and whipped as they're doing it... see how they like it.

Horses are magnificent creatures and look what man does to them Sad

ZeroPlastic · 15/04/2023 17:57

I’m a horsey person, grew up with horses and used to love racing. I’m starting to feel it’s not right and that I don’t want to have any involvement any more. Had a bet today but felt a bit sick actually watching the race. My last time, I think.

That’s not to say that racing would be the first thing I’d choose to ban- factory farming, say, is much crueller. But that’s not an argument to keep supporting racing.

Tinktravels · 15/04/2023 17:57

I wish the weather was like this for ladies day yesterday we got soaked 🤣!

They probably said that about bear baiting.

Did you see how much whipping went in towards the end 😞 oh but they love it

CremeEggThief - Because they don't actually achieve anything. All the M25 protesters did was disrupt the public trying to get to work or hospital. One lady died because her son couldn't get her to hospital on time.

All the protesters have done today is stressed the horses out even more by delaying the race. Just idiots the lot of them.

Prescottdanni123 · 15/04/2023 18:01

@WomanFromTheNorth

So the horses that fell because of the stress from the delays and any horses that might have been distressed and possibly injured/killed if anyone had managed to run out in front of them are collateral damage then?

I work in conservation. I campaign a lot for animal rights. I hate the grand national and any sort of jump races but there are plenty of ways to campaign and raise awareness that don't involve putting animals at risk. I

CremeEggThief · 15/04/2023 18:04

That's not true that protests don't achieve anything, 3dogsandarabbit. It can be a VERY slow process, admittedly, but nothing in society would have ever changed, if everyone had stayed home instead of taking to the streets when they're angry!

Prescottdanni123 · 15/04/2023 18:04

@CremeEggThief

Who can't be bothered to do anything? I do loads for the environment and animals. I just don't do so in a way that puts people or animals lives in danger. Not putting people or animals in danger is actually pretty important if you want people to take you seriously.
