Just put it on to see protesters being dragged off the track. Feel bad for the horses in the ring, it looks warm and there's so many people about.

For those who care about this, and all other ill-treatment of any and all other life on Earth, I implore you to watch "Earthlings".

I scrolled through the photographs (not all of them)

Anyone who defends their right to eat meat should also be aware of how it arrives from field to fork , there are some inhumane practices that because they happen behind closed doors , most people are unaware .

I had no idea about the genital surgery that TB mares go through to allow them to foal but avoiding ongoing bacterial UTI

And though its not the mainpoint of this thread which is about the GN and the horses .
All this supermarket cheap meat that people rave about . Something (or someone) is paying the real price

Now the scumbags have attacked the Snooker, releasing dangerous orange powder onto one of the snooker tables. What are they protesting about now??

The mistreatment of wild snookers?

VincentVaguer · 17/04/2023 20:10

Oil apparently. It looked rather impressive actually. More exciting than actual snooker anyway.

Florenz · 17/04/2023 20:30

Stuff like this really doesn't help the protesters cause. One of my work colleagues went to the snooker today. I'm not sure if he went to the afternoon or evening session but it was something he was looking forward to for ages.

You aren’t retired?! Assumed you were at least 65.

Florenz · 17/04/2023 21:03

I'm 46.

Darker · 17/04/2023 22:24

Just Stop Oil are at the snooker. Completely different group.

TheDuck2018 · 17/04/2023 22:25

A lot of pony and trap racing going on the A413 at the moment which is happening every weekend , no protesters about those poor ponies being hammered up and down the road week week or even police !

And which community of people, well known for how they treat their animals, are responsible for this, I wonder....

I personally can’t wait for the aliens to come down and start racing humans. The smallest of the aliens will ride the humans over the fences, sometimes some humans necks will snap but the aliens will humanely put a laser beam in the human’s head. These racing humans will live in paradise compared with other humans tied up to fence poles next to the launchpads, with just a bucket of water to drink.

Yes, this is a good analogy.

😆l agree with you there!

shockthemonkey · 18/04/2023 07:25

I used to work for the ILPH (now clumsily renamed World Horse Welfare). They were racing mad and few came to the office during Cheltenham. Had a TV on so those who did come to work could watch live.

Their main problem, besides loving horse sports that I feel are inhumane (including Endurance) was that some of their richest donors are racehorse owners and they weren’t going to ruffle those feathers, were they?

They changed directors since those days and I expect they are better now because the directors an equine vet himself - and most equine vets I know deplore racing even if they have to sometimes hide it.

Darker · 18/04/2023 07:35

Charities often get into this kind of pickle with funding… money isn’t easy to come by and it’s not easy or necessarily the right thing to refuse financial support because of a different opinion. Alternative sources of money are often equally problematic, such as gambling (lotteries).

I think there is more scrutiny now and more attention to social licence. And attitudes to equestrian sport are changing… I used to be fine with it, but am more critical now.

but it doesnt hurt? so why cant I hit your child to make her run faster?

Utterly ridiculous. Nobody is going to let you eat their child either, or force it to shit in the street. Animals and children are normally treated differently.

shockthemonkey · 18/04/2023 08:03

Yes, Darker. My issue wasn't that they accepted the money really, it was that, as a result of where the support was coming from, they couldn't speak out against racing.

Not, as I say, that they would have wanted to anyway, what with their own evident love for the sport.

They were more focused on the terrible conditions for working equines in South America and West Africa, and also the transportation of slaughter horses across Europe. They weren't against slaughtering horses per se, finding it slightly preferable to being abandoned in a field... they just campaigned against the unecessarily long journeys. "On the hook, not on the hoof" was one of their mottos back in the day.

Darker · 18/04/2023 08:08

Yes… charities should not be curtailed by their funders and supporters but the reality is that this can be delicate territory.

We are talking about the whips not hurting, not about Tesco lasagne

Yes, I understand. But no one is sat thinking they'd allow what happens to an animal happen to a child, so why are you even asking?

because the poster was claiming that the whips didnt hurt, and I disagreed with them, if they dont hurt, then why not whip your child?

Did you see how much whipping went in towards the end 😞 oh but they love it
Strict whip rules. Horses aren’t “thrashed” and the whips are foam padded, I’ve been hit with one, they don’t hurt. You often see jockeys waving whips and to the untrained eye it might look like horses are being hit, they aren’t.

They either hurt or they dont - @TheFireflies said they dont, so thats why I asked if it was ok to whip their child.

I'm not sure how much clearer I need to make this for you?

Rosula · 18/04/2023 14:23

TheFireflies · 17/04/2023 16:15

Well no, because there are no circumstances where it’s necessary to hit a child.

Whips, when used for steering, can be necessary for safety with large running animals, not just in racing. They should never be used as punishment.

How come horses seem to need more steering when in the final straight, especially if there is another horse close behind them?

Well quite!
