Just put it on to see protesters being dragged off the track. Feel bad for the horses in the ring, it looks warm and there's so many people about.

Racing whips are incredibly padded now. They're not the sticks of old!

So you wouldn't mind being thrashed with a padded whip then?

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:43

Activists achieved nothing I assume?

Already a pile up. It’s not cruel honest 🙄 I’m another who rode horses aa a child. Lovely creatures, but they are also pack animals and will naturally follow each other.

Yes, racing horses hard on the hottest day of the year so far, and watch the morons try to blame the protesters for any injuries and fatalities.

Crocodilekneecaps · 15/04/2023 17:44

Activists on the M57 too.

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 17:44

And if you’re the sort of twat that thinks an acceptable way to protest against animal cruelty is to jump around causing a scene in front of said animals, therefore causing them distress then crack on being an ignorant bastard.
I’m all for having a cause, but at least try and engage your brain and fight for it in an intelligent way.

Great - we agree each other are twats

Backtobed · 15/04/2023 17:44

There seems to be a very common theme of hypocrisy amongst modern protesters.

Meandfour · 15/04/2023 17:44

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:43

Activists achieved nothing I assume?

Absolutely fuck all. Would never have guessed 🙄

Snaaaaacks · 15/04/2023 17:44

We always have a flutter, always have from being a child, think we got second and third, mine fell grr! It's tame compared to how it used to be, the fences were lowered years ago.

Activists achieved nothing I assume?

All they managed to do was stress out a load of horses

What do you suggest they do then? The first thing that needs to happen is a raising of awareness surely? Making the horses wait to race is not ideal but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of their shitty lives.

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:42

Congratulations to everyone that took part. It was a magnificent race.

You're happy that a horse died? Fuck me, that's horrific.

Notanothernewname · 15/04/2023 17:45

I do wonder how long horse racing would last if the same amount of riders died as horses.

twistyizzy · 15/04/2023 17:45

PinkLemonadee · 15/04/2023 17:28

The same could be said about all competition horses. I do agree that they're started far too young though.

The yard i worked for turned them out, as do a lot of yards now.

Depends on the discipline but racing is the worst culprit for starting horses way too young and keeping them in unnatural management regimes. There is then the issue of the thousands of unwanted ex-racers every year and what happens to them. Only a tiny % are re-trained and re-homed so what happens to the rest? Shipped off to the continent as live exports 😡😡😡
Racing needs to have a long hard look at itself but it won't while ££ is king.

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:45

Of all the animals killed in this country, what percentage are racehorses?

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 17:45

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:43

Activists achieved nothing I assume?

Not at all - they are part of a growing momentum. The ban on fox hunting and other ‘sports’ involving animal cruelty came after many, many years of activism remember. Hopefully the same thing will happen in time here too.

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/04/2023 17:46

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/04/2023 17:44

They are raising awareness. The first necessary step before any kind of change.

SwedishEdith · 15/04/2023 17:46

Enfys1982 · 15/04/2023 17:35

Oh look a dead horse at that fence. It’s not fucking cruel is it?

Hope not but just said the green screens were for the jockey.

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:46

What "change"? Banning horse racing? Never going to happen.

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/04/2023 17:47

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:45

Why does that matter? Just because other things are cruel, doesn't mean you can't care about this too.

Darker · 15/04/2023 17:48

SunshineGeorgie · 15/04/2023 17:43

Activists achieved nothing I assume?

Raising awareness to millions of racing fans that there is an issue.

Lots of people will disagree with them but they will know it’s controversial. Some will decide that it’s no longer something they want to support.

If a sport or activity risks losing social licence it is more likely to take a look at itself and make changes. This has already happened in racing with safer course design, stricter rules about whips etc.

Radi0noise · 15/04/2023 17:48

Did you see how much whipping went in towards the end 😞 oh but they love it

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 17:48

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:46

What "change"? Banning horse racing? Never going to happen.

The fox hunters thought that too - it generated too much money and was too much part of the rural way of life. Now look at it.

Radi0noise · 15/04/2023 17:49

Yes there is way more cruel things going on with animals. Farming is mostly cruel, especially pigs and chickens. But this is high profile, that's why they're there

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:49

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/04/2023 17:47

Why does that matter? Just because other things are cruel, doesn't mean you can't care about this too.

So I suppose the protesters spend the other 364 days of the year protesting outside abattoirs, butchers shops, fish and chip shops, McDonalds and the like? They don't just protest the Grand National because it's high profile and gets them lots of twitter likes?
