Just put it on to see protesters being dragged off the track. Feel bad for the horses in the ring, it looks warm and there's so many people about.

Anyone saying that racehorses are well looked after, they may be but they aren't treated like horses!! 90% of racehorses have ulcers due to lack of turnout, too little forage etc.
Major skeletal issues (kissing spines etc) due to to being backed so young.
Nothing about racing is to the benefit of the horses, I say this as someone with 30 yrs of having ex-racers.
Yes they are loved by the lads and lasses looking after them but this doesn't make up for the highly unnatural way they are kept which can cause major physical and psychological issues.

Two horses have already died this week at Aintree. One only this afternoon. It’s fucking cruel and people need to wake up. The irony of worrying about the horses in the paddock but being forced over Beachers Brook is laughable.

Try forcing a horse over a 12 inch fence if it doesn’t want to jump it. Even over a pole on the ground.

Enfys1982 · 15/04/2023 17:24

How the fuck can you compare a footballer to a race horse @PinkLemonadee A bit like the idiot commentator on ITV just now comparing it to Formula One. Footballers and racing drivers have chosen to follow that career path. Horses haven’t.

Haven't they? The ones that don't want to do it don't stay in training.

The horses run the course on their own, even if the jockey falls off. They love running and jumping, it's in their blood.

Bollocks and this shows your complete ignorance. They continue to run because they are herd animals NOT because they love it. Educate yourself about horse behaviour and psychology before making such ill informed statements.

They keep running because they are herd animals and they feel panicked. They don't love running like this and being whipped and forced to jump fences. Not natural at all. But keep lying to yourself as most people do. They have horrible lives, being trawled all over the place; living in stables the size of a small bedroom, rarely going out other than to be raced; being thrashed by the jockeys. None of it is natural. And let's not talk about many of the ones who don't make it.

The protesters are there to draw attention to the cause because they care about animals and I think many people don't even realise how cruel horse racing is. Animals should not be used for human entertainment.

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:27

Why don't the people who hate horse racing just not watch it, attend it or bet on it?

The same could be said about all competition horses. I do agree that they're started far too young though.

The yard i worked for turned them out, as do a lot of yards now.

People do force horses eg rapping, electric spurs etc. That's mainly in showjumping but it definitely happens. Horses are prey animals so very rarely will fight back.

Because that doesn't stop innocent, defenceless animals being abused. They have no voice.

This ⬆️. Horse racing is an abhorrent blood sport 🤬. And yes, before anyone asks, I rode as a child and was brought up in a family who loved horse racing regularly attending Point to Point races !! Hope that means to some I’m qualified to have an opinion! 🤬

What's your experience with horses?

Tinktravels · 15/04/2023 17:29

Idiots ! Drag them out and get on with the race !

Dingus · 15/04/2023 17:29

I grew up riding and looking after horses, and I disagree with horse racing. It's barbaric, but it's all about the money I suppose.

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/04/2023 17:30

PinkLemonadee · 15/04/2023 17:20

Footballers have died on the pitch - competing at a high level has risks for everyone involved and the National has done a lot to mitigate the risks. And again, my own horse broke a leg playing in the field, so it can unfortunately happen anywhere.

Footballers have a choice. Horses don't. And it can happen anywhere but it's far more likely to happen there. And the whole industry is cruel and vile; not the same as keeping horses as pets at all.

twistyizzy · 15/04/2023 17:31

PinkLemonadee · 15/04/2023 17:29

What's your experience with horses?

Well I agree 100% with @WomanFromTheNorth and I have 35+ years experience of horses (owned ex racers for over 20 years) and have got BHS Stage 3 qualification. What is your experience @PinkLemonadee?

WomanFromTheNorth · 15/04/2023 17:31

PinkLemonadee · 15/04/2023 17:29

I've had three.

The protesters failed anyway, the race has started.

Agreed. The Grand National is a particularly cruel race with a particularly high rate of injury & death for horses. But it makes lots of money.

Tarantullah · 15/04/2023 17:31

I don't like or agree with horse racing but similarly i think these extreme protests don't really convince anyone to change their views, they just convince those who aren't overly bothered either way take the opposing view out of principle. I think there are ways to apply pressure and to campaign and raise awareness, but I hate these disruptive protests and don't think they achieve anything, just another form of if you disagree with me you don't possibly understand the issue.

QuestionableMouse · 15/04/2023 17:31

Ugh looks like one down at the first. I feel sick. (it's on at work so i can't turn it off.)

Get up and walk out to the toilet. You don't need to be forced to watch it.

SirChenjins · 15/04/2023 17:32

I’m not watching it - I loathe it and hope it’s banned, but it won’t be because there’s too much money involved. It’s a dirty business on so many levels.

Enfys1982 · 15/04/2023 17:32

Already a pile up. It’s not cruel honest 🙄 I’m another who rode horses aa a child. Lovely creatures, but they are also pack animals and will naturally follow each other.

Florenz · 15/04/2023 17:31

I don't imagine they thought they would ever stop the race. It is to make people stop and think and question. Most people won't. But there will be some people there who will. I have been to horse races but I'd never go again because I've had my eyes opened.
