Anybody else have a word they can’t stand?

Two words I hate for reasons unknown to me - moist and buggy. No idea why.

By contrast, I love ‘bumble bee’ and again I have no justification.

Surely I’m not the only oddball who has this irrational like/dislike of words?

Most words that have been infantilised to a version ending in Y or IE:

Comfy, veggie, panties, and any part of the female anatomy so treated (usually by men or pornographers). 🤮

Westfacing · 14/04/2023 15:59

Creamed spinach

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/04/2023 16:53

Pamper and pampering. At least partly because they’re so often in connection with massages and/or spa days, from both of which I’d run a mile.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 14/04/2023 17:01

Gutted - it makes me think of being disembowelled

SilentHedges · 14/04/2023 17:05

"Cuppa" ... and it's used on here a lot. Makes me cringe.

How did I guess that moist would the word mentioned in the OP.

Why is it never pulchritude, or pustule?

I always think pulchritude should mean something disgusting... I'm surprised every time that it means beautiful!

FriedEggs1 · 14/04/2023 17:07

Literally

Viviennemary · 14/04/2023 17:09

Misogyny. Its used a lot on here. Never heard anyome use it in real life. Only here and a few times on TV. It must be quite a new word.

Gloriousgardener11 · 14/04/2023 17:10

Nipples -- ewww !

HeadNorth · 14/04/2023 17:11

Buttery, as in buttery soft. It conjures a most unpleasant image.

The second is quite established but I always think 'up where?'

OP

Moist is one of the most hated words in the English language.

I read somewhere it's because we associate it with smutty references to female arousal as it's been historically used by slimy comedians as slang, which makes us cringe because of the connection and distaste (for them).

Hoist, joist, foist have similar sounds but most people have no issue with them.

Me too. It sounds like it should be describing someone covered in scabs and oozing boils.

Fluffywabbits · 14/04/2023 17:27

Muff

Codger2023 · 14/04/2023 17:29

This would make sense. I can’t stand it. It makes me itch but I have no issue with any of the words it rhymes with.

Especially a 'buttery-soft leather jacket" !
