If the coronation was being funded by voluntary contributions would you pay towards it?

I wouldn't, I think charlie should pay for it out of his personal billions. If you would, why?

No. Not a penny

AlwaysGinPlease · 11/04/2023 07:10

No

What makes you think he has £billions ?.

The wealth of the monarchy is difficult to understand. It's a complicated set up but one that means that the King remains extremely wealthy. The Queen and future Kings or Queens are except from inheritance tax thanks to John Major in 1993 and they are except from paying other tax too. They 'graciously' 🤮 deign to pay income tax and some other taxes but on a voluntary basis (WTF!)
The crown estate is worth billions (15 billion) and they get 25% of the profit so they don't 'technically' have billions but also, they sort of do.

If King Charles or Prince William had a shred of decency or teeniest bit of a sense of public duty they would ask for legislation to be updated so that they do not unfairly benefit from tax exemptions.

As a family they are making sure they maintain their wealth and status. The Queen was as culpable as the rest of them. She may have been a much more savvy and well meaning monarch but she was just as keen as any of them to maintain her vast wealth.

The monarchy ensures their finances are complicated and secretive.

I can't believe anyone likes or respects King Charles

Laiste · 11/04/2023 10:16

No.

Pair of pompous twats.

Thesharkradar · 11/04/2023 12:15

The Queen was as culpable as the rest of them
Indeed she was much more skilled at reputation management, a far higher calibre of reptilian narcissist

She was very clued up about what would make her look bad and went to Great lengths to cover it up, Charlie doesn't seem to have quite the same self-awareness 🤷

Revealed: Queen lobbied for change in law to hide her private wealth

Monarch dispatched private solicitor to secure exemption from transparency law

No. I couldn’t give a dog’s rip either way re the monarchy.

I won’t be watching the coronation and will be working on the bank holiday (standard rate), so I won’t benefit obliquely from it either.

Mostar · 11/04/2023 12:22

I reckon they should get corporate sponsorship.

He could have the sponsors' logos on his robes and his carriage, like in F1.

PolkaDotMankini · 11/04/2023 12:24

No. The RF have enough money to pay for their own party.

Thesharkradar · 11/04/2023 12:29

Surely the monarchy can only exist if the people are willing & obedient cap doffers (aka 'subjects' ) once we say, en mass, 'nope pay for your own parties' it all turns into something different 🤷

musicforthesoul · 11/04/2023 12:44

Nope, not interested and they have enough money to pay for their own party.

Most other public services I'd be happy to chip in for whether i personally use or not as it's for the public good, I don't consider the coronation to be in the same category.

Crunchymum · 11/04/2023 12:51

How much would the contribution be? I'd stick a fiver in. That would be my limit.

In a world where Love Island contestants become celebrities and girls want to look like a Kardashian-Jenner clone, I don't begrudge the tradition and ceremony of the new monarch being celebrated. I won't personally be celebrating but I think it's slightly more significant and meaningful than a lot of shit out there.

EggyBreads · 11/04/2023 12:54

Absolutely no way

WahWahWahs · 11/04/2023 12:58

Would I fuck 😂

Mostar · 11/04/2023 13:04

Having a king probably made some sort of sense hundreds and hundreds of years ago when we needed some big bastard with a sword to protect us from the invading hordes who'd come round to rob and pillage our green and pleasant land. Nowadays not so much. Point being, have Charles fight some Viking dudes with a sword. Hand to hand combat with big fuck-off swords.

I'd chip in for that.

In fairness, the Kardashians and other bubblehead influencers probably put considerably more ‘effort’ into working their brand than your average royal puts into cutting the occasional ribbon and waving dutifully at the plebs — plus they wouldn’t have come to such (admittedly regrettable) prominence had a lot of people not liked what they were doing or actively choosing to tune in to Love Island and the like. There’s a kind of ‘democracy’ there that’s completely absent from the RF.

WeedKnife · 11/04/2023 13:15

Nope. He could walk to the cathedral and have it done privately and then walk back. Job done. I'm sure he could pass a bakers on the way to pick himself up a celebratory cake too.

Lockheart · 11/04/2023 13:15

Yeah I'd pay a few quid for a day off work. It's cheaper than buying extra holiday days from work.

Yeah me too. ⚔️

Vinorosso74 · 11/04/2023 13:31

No. I certainly won't be watching the coronation either.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 11/04/2023 13:54

Begrudgingly but only because my brother is marching with his regiment in the parade and it’ll be a wonderful occasion for him. If he wasn’t, I wouldn’t have been bothered about it at all. Why do we always need a stupid concert on these occasions too? And the 8 million for portraits of Kind Charles?

PolkaDotMankini · 11/04/2023 14:26

This is an excellent idea. Only clean Viking dudes though. No traditional soap-dodging types.

Jonei · 11/04/2023 14:32

I think the soap dodgers would be much better to bring an air of authenticity to the occasion.

Mostar · 11/04/2023 16:54

I don't think you get well-groomed Vikings. They're all very much into untidy beards. Bunch of scruffs.

Require the monarch to participate in a swordfight

Having a monarch made sense in the past when a fearsome leader was required to stave off invasions from Vikings, the French etc. If they weren't up to the job, they were overthrown. The monarch should continue to be tested in this way by fighting a duel against a formidable opponent.

The position of monarch of the United Kingdom etc. is a ceremonial, hereditary position fulfilled by whoever is born to it . Including a duel in the ceremonial duties of the monarch would test the individual's worthiness to wear the crown. Other advantages include: entertainment for their subjects, uniting their subjects in support for the monarch, providing a unique tourist attraction and incentivising the would-be monarch to keep fit and healthy as an example in the fight against obesity.
