Nostalgia thread...who else misses the Easter eggs they had as a kid?

So much more variety and inventiveness in packaging than today.

I know that demand and supply and profit mean the range has narrowed and changed over the years. But I miss the types of eggs we had as a kid.

Love this thread. I had the smarties mug. Also remember the mint cream eggs.
I also think kids had way less stuff in those days (well, I did). There wasn't the constant trickle of treats and also you had to wait. I remember the anticipation of seeing three or four Easter eggs on the dresser that people had sent for me, but no way would I be allowed anything before Easter Sunday.

Taytocrisps · 09/04/2023 20:02

Does anyone remember getting easter eggs with little ceramic animals inside them? Not altogether sure if I've imagined them - I must ask my siblings. This would have been the late '70s or early '80s. As well as eating the chocolate, we used to play with the boxes and make towers out of them.

The smarties one brings back such good memories!

Mini eggs did one with a mug this year - my kids were more excited for the mug than the egg!

Whatwouldnanado · 09/04/2023 20:08

I had a cuckoo clock. And those gorgeous toffee eggs with pink or purple foil.

MumOf2workOptions · 09/04/2023 20:12

The eggs with a mug were a definate favourite in our house. I didn't see any this Year but if mini eggs did one I'll have to be on the ball for next year!

@sdsdg31000
Omgoodness, I was going to talk about the toffees and mallow eggs. I loved those so much.

Quent · 09/04/2023 20:23

I also miss the stacks of reduced chocolate eggs after Easter Monday - that really does seem to be a thing of the past.

I was browsing Easter stuff while shopping on Saturday and my local B&M had been completely picked clean of Easter eggs, while Asda had just a few eggs - and they were all something really boring and not kid-friendly, like Cadbury's Fingers. I recall it being similar the last few years.

Thecomfortador · 09/04/2023 20:24

Just finished a brew from my bang in the door mug - it must be 20+ years old now? No idea what the chocolate tasted like. The Smarties foil was particularly exciting. I remember seeing a whole wall of Easter eggs in Woolworth's each year - obviously from a small child perspective but Easter egg aisles just don't seem as exciting as an adult.

foxlover47 · 09/04/2023 20:24

That smartie egg photo brought back all the feels

Paloma66 · 09/04/2023 20:24

Funny enough I was just sitting here reminiscing about the days when the contents were in a bag inside the eggs, not separate....

Peoplepissmeoff · 09/04/2023 20:25

I loved these!

Does anyone remember the beautiful Cadbury eggs with a lovely chick design etched into chocolate egg?

Daisychainsandglitter · 09/04/2023 20:30

I had the exact same egg as the one jellytots has posted one year.
I loved it. Always remember that cup.

topcat2014 · 09/04/2023 20:32

I'm going to the museum of brands in London this week hopefully some of these will be there!

Youreeavinalaff · 09/04/2023 20:35

I was saying the other day that the confectionery companies are missing a trick here - people would snap up eggs in retro packaging I'm sure. The late 70s/early 80s designs were gorgeous. Easter was so exciting as a child - Easter bonnets and basket making at school and nursery, making chocolate coconut nests, an egg from Thorntons with my name iced on the from my grandparents, buttons eggs from our neighbours. I miss the little sugary speckled chewy eggs we used to get too.

Anyone remember the plastic animals with tiny foil wrapped eggs inside a clear tummy, they had some kind of hazelnut creme filling, not like Nutella. Might have been kinder? Eighties/early nineties

Yes! I loved those ones. I can still taste the eggs

tobee · 09/04/2023 20:40

I used to like it when the thickness of the egg was uneven; some bits really thick and some thin. And a ridge to the egg. I loved eating the egg by biting it off the big half rather than breaking bits off.

PollyThePixie · 09/04/2023 20:44

@tobee - that’s the very kind I remember. The very kind I almost knocked my grandad out with.

Yes I really remember this and wish they’d bring it back. I also seem to remember Cadbury’s eggs came in two separated halves rather than joined together which made it easier to eat.

I had the Garfield “I hate mornings” and the brown smarties mugs for a while.

Clevs · 09/04/2023 21:07

I used to love getting a Yorkie egg that came in a box shaped like a lorry (like the photo in the OP). I also used to love getting a box of 6 Creme Eggs that came in actual egg box shaped packaging.

The first time I got given a big Creme Egg egg I thought it was just a bigger version of a normal Creme Egg and the whole thing would have the filling in. I was so disappointed 😔

Sohungrynow · 09/04/2023 21:10

So what about the egg cups, I’ve got about six of them, it’s just occurred to me I have no recollection of getting them or what was in them.

doodlejump1980 · 09/04/2023 21:12

I’ve got the brown smarties mug. Holds all my pens on my desk.

Yes! They were Kinder Bueno, you can still get little bags of the eggs now. I always used to get a pink and clear plastic pig, my brother got the blue one. If I remember rightly they had a coin slot on them too so you could use them as a money box afterwards.
