Nostalgia thread...who else misses the Easter eggs they had as a kid?

So much more variety and inventiveness in packaging than today.

I know that demand and supply and profit mean the range has narrowed and changed over the years. But I miss the types of eggs we had as a kid.

I was saying the other day that the confectionery companies are missing a trick here - people would snap up eggs in retro packaging I'm sure. The late 70s/early 80s designs were gorgeous. Easter was so exciting as a child - Easter bonnets and basket making at school and nursery, making chocolate coconut nests, an egg from Thorntons with my name iced on the from my grandparents, buttons eggs from our neighbours. I miss the little sugary speckled chewy eggs we used to get too.

This resonates so much ❤️ Thank you!

Used to get 12 eggs in a box that looked like a cuckoo clock in the Seventies, anyone remember ?

Yes I remember..would never have remembered that without you mentioning.

Mydoghealsmyheart · 09/04/2023 21:24

The Suchard mini eggs were delicious, filled with a praline filling I think. My dm would buy a quarter of them for me and my dsis as well as our normal Easter eggs. Happy days.

I still mourn the loss of the crème egg size eggs that were filled with caramel and marshmallow. I used to get one whenever I went into the local newsagents with my Mom.

I dream about these things. What were they called???

Quirrelsotherface · 09/04/2023 21:30

Yes loved those kinder Bueno plastic animals with little eggs inside! I had a blue dog one which I remember the feeling of happiness when I got it to this day!

I often ask myself if they were really better than now or if it's just rose tinted glasses but they most definitely were. It was the variation of choice, the colours of the foil and just..the cadburys chocolate.

Aren't things supposed to get better with time, not worse?!

Thank goodness someone else remembers them, i thought i had imagined them.

Why are there no mugs in Easter eggs anymore?

hettiethehare · 09/04/2023 21:58

ChocAuVin · 09/04/2023 19:58

@hettiethehare
Either of these…? Smile

Yes! It was the I Love Mornings one!

Jijithecat · 09/04/2023 22:03

I had a Pyramint Easter egg one year. That was amazing.
I always wanted a Smarties mug. Still do!

Singapore4 · 09/04/2023 22:05

I remember getting an egg (not sure of the brand) but it had a clear bag with chocolates inside the egg too! I think it was purple foil.

The good old days. 90s kid if anyone else remembers?

DHsPoorBack · 09/04/2023 22:05

DNan has confirmed that they were indeed Mackintosh eggs (the pink and purple and orange foil wrapped eggs in a long line box) but she's been looking for them for years and says they must have gone out of business

DahliaMacNamara · 09/04/2023 22:06

I loved the toffee eggs. My dad wouldn't buy Easter eggs on principle, so we'd get Easter money and could spend it on sweets or whatever else we liked, except the outrageously-priced eggs. An egg bargain after Easter was tolerated. Anyway, it meant we didn't get many chocolate eggs, and cherished the ones we received from aunts and uncles. I don't know what Dad did by way of reciprocating with our cousins. I was too busy lusting after a Quality Street egg to consider it.

I remember these too!
The hands on the clock were moveable.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 09/04/2023 22:10

From a profitability perspective those eggs were not cost effective nor were they particularly good for the environment with all the excessive packaging they had. They were good though - there’s no denying that.

The toffee mallow eggs! The size of a crème egg but with toffee filling one side and the mallow filling the other! Those were delicious. I’m so glad that the mugs are making a comeback, and also the treats being inside again! My favourite egg as a child, which I still remember now, was an absolutely enormous Miss Piggy one in the v early 80s. It was brilliant!

Toffee Mallows! Thanks for reminding me about them. I’d totally forgotten they ever existed; they were wonderful! I always found crème eggs far too sickly.
I used to have an Easter egg mug from the early 1970’s with green crocodiles on it (my sister had one with purple elephants) that was my camping holiday mug for years. I’d love to have it now.

JenniferBooth · 09/04/2023 22:21

The toffee mallow eggs were Mackintosh
I got a Suchard egg from my godmother in the 80s Was lovely and came in a peach coloured box with a Victorian or Edwardian woman on the side.
My brothers brown Smarties mug is still on a mug tree at my parents and he still drinks tea from it when he visits them

DNan used to get us this long pack of 7 caramel filled eggs (creme egg sized) and the box was often the 7 dwarves. They were in jewel coloured pink, purple and orange foil.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yes! That has totally stirred up a memory for me!

Jellylover · 09/04/2023 22:25

Anyone remember the hard sugar eggs that you had to suck for ages before reaching the chocolate coated inside. They were hollow and about the same size as a Cadbury creme egg. I loved them!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 09/04/2023 22:33

The love there is for these babies - surely there would be a good market for their triumphant return?

Yes, I was just telling my partner about those! They were quite hard work I seem to remember.

I remember the Suchard eggs, they seemed really posh at the time. Lovely chocolate though.

JenniferBooth · 09/04/2023 22:40

Yes the Suchard chocolate tasted divine

I’d buy them again!

@Jellylover I remember these too. The sugar coating was lovely although I seem to remember that the chocolate was that cheap cooking type and was really disappointing. I think they were blue with brown speckles on?

I always seemed to get a Smarties egg from my parents. My grandparents would give my sister and me a box of three Creme Eggs each (proper Creme Eggs in the green, red and blue wrappers, not the rubbish ones we have now).

At primary school there was a tradition that you'd make a woven paper nest and cotton-wool chicks, which would be displayed in the classroom, and then when you came to take it home for the holidays, it would be 'magically' filled with those pastel coloured sugar eggs.😃

I remember this tradition at primary school now you’ve mentioned it! - you’d make a little basket or nest and there would be a creme egg or similar on the last day! Happy days 🥰

I loved the multicoloured jewel foil of the old-fashioned buttons, jelly tots, smarties eggs — but hated the actual chocolate, so Easter was a mixed blessing for me — my eggs just picked up untouched! My DD (age 10) just gets a load of identical Lindt bunnies, but at least she gets to eat the chocolate (which is much nicer than the old style eggs, to be honest.)

Like this but not father Christmas

Oh wow I forgot those. I had a rabbit one. They were great!
