So much more variety and inventiveness in packaging than today.

I know that demand and supply and profit mean the range has narrowed and changed over the years. But I miss the types of eggs we had as a kid.

Ahh I remember these, they were so much better than the ones we have now. Also am I imaging it or did some used to come with egg cups?

Iam4eels · 09/04/2023 16:19

Yes, we had some eggs with egg cups. My mam would always sing the "chick chick chick chick chicken" song and make the egg cup dance when we unboxed them.

Yes, you could get them in boxes of three that were open on top, with each egg in its own slot, or you could buy presentation ones in egg cups - my parents still have some creme egg egg cups.

I remember getting this smarties egg with the brown smarties cup. I love the colours of the foil around the egg.

Used to get 12 eggs in a box that looked like a cuckoo clock in the Seventies, anyone remember ?

Oh yes! Very fond memories of those

AnchorWHAT · 09/04/2023 16:30

I got one from my auntie that was a milky bar one, it was shaped like a stagecoach! I played with the empty box for ages after. Loved coming down for breakfast the weekend before easter when mum and dad had been to a dinner dance and seeing the raffle prizes they won lined up on the sideboard, quite often one or two would be really big easter eggs.

I recently got rid of one my kids’ Mini Eggs shape car that came with the egg, in a fit of Marie bloody Kondo Regretting it now…

Yes. I had those in the 60’s as well.

QueefQueen80s · 09/04/2023 16:40

I used to get a loy of mugs with mine, not sure if they still do them.

FlutterbButterfly · 09/04/2023 16:44

Anyone remember Rowntree's Minty eggs? Same size as Cadbury Creme eggs (well.the size they used to be!). Had them in the 80s , possibly early 90s too.

PollyThePixie · 09/04/2023 16:44

my Favorite eggs were Smarties and Bottons. They were so thick that even when you rolled them down the stairs you quite often had to do it again. And I recall one year mine didn’t break so my grandad told me to break it on his head and I neatly knocked him out.

Last year I bought myself a huge Dime egg and it was the closest I’d come to the eggs of my childhood for a very long time.

IHeartGeneHunt · 09/04/2023 16:57

I miss the mugs. My last Easter egg mug broke a couple of years ago.

highfidelity · 09/04/2023 16:58

While I want to say that I love the new smaller Cadbury easter eggs now have treats packed inside the actual shell, it doesn't make up for the fact that their once glossy chocolate shell engraved with a cute rabbit or chick is long gone. Now, the chocolate is dull and they just say Cadbury's.

Whomever owns Cadbury's has really ruined a great product.

Glittertwins · 09/04/2023 17:24

@FlutterbButterfly : yes, I remember the minty eggs!

I've realised I used to have that rather fetching brown mug in the Smarties Egg photo. The mugs are very dull now.

x2boys · 09/04/2023 18:59

Yes I remember the mugs ,I think even before KitKat and wispa etc,did mugs,I would get Easter eggs in a mug?

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/04/2023 19:01

I would give my right arm for a Cadbury's buttons egg with the buttons inside. The chocolate used to be so good.

Tholeont · 09/04/2023 19:14

Minty eggs were fantastic. We used to have a family Easter egg hunt with my cousins, then count all our eggs and try and swap for the ones we liked best..

This takes me back! Yes to the exclusively Easter egg mug collection!

I still have and cherish two Garfield mugs obtained as a kid in this way.

OMG - I had one of those Garfield mugs which I had completely forgotten was from an Easter Egg!

Sadly I no longer have mine, but I was very fond of it for many years!

AllTheChaos · 09/04/2023 19:27

The toffee mallow eggs! The size of a crème egg but with toffee filling one side and the mallow filling the other! Those were delicious. I’m so glad that the mugs are making a comeback, and also the treats being inside again! My favourite egg as a child, which I still remember now, was an absolutely enormous Miss Piggy one in the v early 80s. It was brilliant!

xsquared · 09/04/2023 19:43

Had this exact conversation with SIL today when we were exchanging eggs.

I miss having surprises inside the main egg, which made it more exciting as a child. Only 10 years or so ago, I bought a chocolate egg with a Hello Kitty ceramic egg cup included with it for dd.

All just expensive hollow chocolate eggs with maybe a sprinkling of fudge cubes these days. You may as well buy a bar of chocolate for the cost.

UndercoverCop · 09/04/2023 19:48

Anyone remember the plastic animals with tiny foil wrapped eggs inside a clear tummy, they had some kind of hazelnut creme filling, not like Nutella. Might have been kinder? Eighties/early nineties

UndercoverCop · 09/04/2023 19:52

Like this but not father Christmas

My dm her sister and I used to have cardboard eggs with Suchard eggs in. They were a bit smallet than a brazil nut and the last time I saw them were about 50p a quarter. There must have been about 10 different wrappings each with a different filling. It used to be that most were yellow foil with little chicks on, thé best was green with a gold band like on a cigar.
When I was little used to have a standard egg with chocs in.
