Just that really......

Mine was a few years ago and I'm still Confused whenever I think about it.

My youngest had started primary school a few months prior to the event and she had got a bit friendly with one of the other children in the class and as a result I had got to know their mum quite well, in terms of chatting in the playground anyway.

We had storm one morning on the school run and as it was much closer to my house than hers I invited her back for a cuppa till the storm passed. I put the kettle on to boil and then went to the loo, then had to take an "urgent" phone call from my eldest school for some reason or other, can't remember what exactly and it certainly wasn't an emergency.

When I was upstairs I heard some clattering around in the kitchen and then heard a sizzling noise.

When I went back downstairs she was frying bacon. She hadn't asked, I hadn't offered and it meant she had gone through my fridge and cupboards the first time she had been to my house. When I asked what she was doing she said she was hungry and hadn't eaten that day Confused

Safe to say I didn't ask her to come back after that!!

What CF behaviours have others shown in your home?

I also had a friend whom we had invited to stay. I’d spent ages making her room as nice as I could, got out the best bedding, flowers, etc. She walked in, threw the damask bedspread on the floor and said ‘ that will have to go!’ She also wanted to vacuum the room, although we never found out why ( it was spotless, DH is the demon vacuumer and he’d done it two hours before).

I have a friend like that and dread it when she comes. criticises everything and starts cleaning, when my house is spotless . Last time she turned up, our plates had scratches and were thus too dangerous, flowers are dusty, fallen leaves are dirty, our splashback is too rough in its texture and might harbour bacteria... She's mentally ill but is in denial.

Gabby8 · 07/04/2023 18:12

Wow how could anyone think that was ok!

FIL came in first time to my mums house put his feet up on an antique table and grabbed the remote and asked for a sandwich- sulked when I told him to take feet of the table proceeded to put feet up on sofa.

Mil rearranges my cupboards and tells me where to put stuff which drives me nuts- also walked into my mums house uninvited to look at her new kitchen while she wasn’t in the house (we were living next door and had a key).

I rented a room to a male friend who worked nights in construction. I came home from work sick at 11am to find some bloke naked in my bed. Turns out he lived miles away but working with my friend Monday to Friday and had been sleeping in my bed during the day for weeks. I was furious and told my friend to leave. He thought I was totally over reacting and said ‘it’s hardly like he’s been using your toothbrush’

The morning after doing a night shift ( got home a 5am ) my MIL came over uninvited at 9 am , I’m still in bed understandably as I was absolutely knackered from the night shift! She proceeds to open all the curtains in my bedroom , and starts telling me get to up and get started for the day! Safe to say I wasn’t happy with my partner for letting her in 😂 I wouldn’t of actually minded if she came in and just left me to sleep and had a cuppa with my partner! I did remind her I did a night shift and she apologised but still I wouldn’t come into someone’s home and start opening their curtains and getting them up for the day!

That is unbelievable

woodhill · 07/04/2023 18:20

Why did your dp allow her to go into your room like that, so rude

When I was 15 and a very silly little kid who thought she was grown up, got involved with group a few years older than myself. My new ‘girlfriend’s’ boyfriend gave me some drugs, I didn’t have any money to pay him, and I thought that was that.
I arranged to meet my ‘friend’ the next weekend at my house. Who turned up? Her boyfriend with two other blokes. For some stupid reason I got in a car with them, they gave me something and I was pretty out of it……. and well you can guess the rest. It was my payment to him. At least they drove me home.
The thing is my ‘friend’ knew all about this. I don’t think I have ever been so hurt in the whole of my life. Talk about growing up quickly.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Just awful.

I'm impressed that a construction worker managed to sleep in your bed for weeks without you knowing tbh.

Not in my home so I hope it's ok to still share, but on a holiday for my 25th birthday my friend ordered the most expensive bottle of red wine on room service, had half a glass and then left it open so it spoiled. Then come checkout she conveniently stood outside the hotel while I checked out as it was in my name. Never paid me a penny back for the wine and meals, and didn't even pay off the end of the trip.
My own 25th birthday trip cost me an extra €500, CF.

An elderly friend of my long departed parents rang me to say she was visiting our town, her daughter lives in the same town btw. This lady said “you can pick me up at the station on Thursday evening ,I will stay with you, I’m sure you can run me round and I will be leaving Tuesday evening”. No mention of why she wasn’t staying at her daughters home, no please or would it be ok ?.
I managed to say sorry we are going away for the weekend so can’t host you, which was true ,but I’m still gobsmacked at the presumption.
Ive never heard from this person since.

We are friends with a couple who regularly come round and the bloke always insists he cook for us all. It really irks me. For one thing it's an implied criticism of my cooking. He has been known to use ingredients without checking. And he never attempts to clean up either. He's not even a great cook, although he obviously thinks he is.

Does he though?
Really?

Whataboutpurple · 07/04/2023 18:40

I’ve posted before about this

when I had ds a midwife came round, we have a no shoes in the house rule anyway and it was a rainy muddy disgusting day plus we have an issue with dog mess on our street it’s awful . She refused so we offered some shoe covers she refused again so we said she couldn’t come in. She started ranting about us needing to let her see the baby was safe . She was horrible. We said she could come in but had to wait while we put newspaper down. She refused to wash her hands as well .

She then proceeded to handle ds so roughly I had to take him off her and shouted at her to leave. I was in shock she had had him in one hand and sort of flipped him and dropped him down onto her other hand (she wasn’t checking a startle reflex or anything ) she had also made us strip him off totally and he was visibly cold (it was winter) and said we had to leave him undressed after weighing so she could do a full body check ?and I said enough just get out of my house

We made a formal complaint and got a full apology but it was awful. I’ve got a large family and never ever had a midwife like before or after everyone else has been lovely but she was absolutely hateful

My now ex SIL turned up the morning of our wedding while I was busy getting ready, photographer here etc, with her very energetic big dog and announced she was leaving him at ours overnight as the hotel doesn’t accept dogs!!

She knew that no one would be staying at our house that night as me and DH would be staying at hotel but said the dog would just lay down and sleep. Before I could object she waltzed out.

Later in the day the dog managed to squeeze itself out of our large cat flap and escape from the garden. A neighbour called the wedding venue as he saw the dog vanish down the street and SIL had the nerve to shout at my DH that it was all our fault and our cat obviously scared the dog so much it escaped. They had to jump in the car and search for the dog and ended up finding it and sneaking it in to their hotel room over night.

My SIL invited herself + family for two weeks over Christmas the year we moved to a popular tourist destination. I was also experiencing a really difficult pregnancy and barely functional. One evening before bed I had a snack of some sort and left a bowl and a glass in the otherwise spotless sink. In the morning she saw it, tutted and said “I don’t know how you can live like this. I always do the dishes before bed.”
Maybe it was just hormones giving me the irrational rage but she hasn’t been in my home unless under extreme duress since and certainly not to spend the night.

The response to that is: Oh sorry, I would have told you they were there if I’d realised.

Well I was stupid and should have known better. But my so called friend was an utter cow for letting it happen. It could have been worse and I could have got pregnant! But you live and learn.

When I went into early labour for dc2 , I put my parents on notice because they were coming to look after elder one. They came early and unbeknownst to me invited my Db to stay too ( in a tiny house) ; left the house unlocked so he could let in which he did whilst we were out and then made himself at home in the kitchen. His dog later threw up a large intestinal worm in the kitchen My waters broke that evening I went into hospital with DH. My DM wanted them to be the ones who told our eldest the happy birth news ( DH got home in the early hours and had woken her to tell her himself!) They were disappointed!

Pelsall116 · 07/04/2023 18:56

I had a friend that picked up some of my correspondence that happenefd to be on the table and read it! When I objected she informed me, "well, you left it lying around...." needless to say I was mich more careful with what was left on show after that, but personally I thought (and still do) it was a right cheek! Not something I would ever dream of doing

We moved from the uk to Bavaria, about a 2 hour drive from ski slopes.
Partner of DH’s former uk boss announced that she was coming to stay with us because she needed a skiing holiday and the dates that worked for her. We really weren’t happy about it and explained that wouldn’t work for us as we were visiting the uk. She muttered then decided to book onto the same flight as us back to Germany so ‘we wouldn’t be inconvenienced collecting her from the airport’
She managed to upset out DD on the flight by shaming her for eating ‘too much’ -one filled roll.
At our home she complained about the state we’d left the house in and explained how I was feeding my dog wrong, all within 1 hour.
During the next 5 days she hid my office keys ( because I left them on the table and they looked untidy), upset our son by calling him lazy for not washing her breakfast things, told us we needed to buy a wardrobe for the room she was staying in (went very quiet when I suggested she helped move an old one out of the cellar and up the stairs) and was taken skiing every day by my husband. She insisted on doing black runs despite being totally incompetent which spoiled the skiing for him and declined to share the petrol costs. Was unhappy that DH insisted she buy her own ski pass.
Was horrified at the end of the week when we went out to eat as a family at a reasonably priced restaurant and realized that not only did we expect her to pay for her own meal but had been hoping she would contribute to the whole bill as a ‘thank you’.
Got really pissed the next year when we threw politeness to the wind and simply said ‘no’ to her demand for a repeat.

ReadersD1gest · 07/04/2023 19:02

we threw politeness to the wind and simply said ‘no’
Which you should have done the first time. Who lets a former boss's partner bulldoze into their home like that? It's not polite, it's being a pushover.

OldSchoolCasualty · 07/04/2023 19:06

An old friend of mine was visiting with her two kids, and wanted to meet another mum she met on the 'Peanut' app, which is fine, always up for meeting new people.
Between the three of us we have 5 children under 5 ( 2 boys each for them an a girl that's mine) SO we go back to the new mums flat because its closest to the beach where we are, decide to feed the kids pizza for dinner. My old friend suggested rather than dragging all the kids out again and pissing about getting all the kids back in their prams they'd (old friend and peanut mum) would just pop to the supermarket next door and grab a few pizzas.
Fine I thought although wary about being left in charge of 5 children, two I had only met that day and didn't know the names of. They'll only be about 15 minutes I reckoned. NO
nearly 2 hours later they came back claiming that the supermarket didn't have the brand of beer they wanted. I was 15 minutes away from calling child services on these children being abandoned in an air B&B!
Turns out they'd stopped for a pint on the way back.
absolutely ridiculous CF behaviour! who leaves their children with a complete stranger!!!!
Still raging about it nearly a year later!

When dh and I were first married we were really skint and I had to carefully budget our food bill. One day mil turned up for a surprise visit, just before lunchtime. After I had made her a cup of tea and offered her a biscuit, she handed me 1 bread roll and said “just put anything on it.” She must have seen my confusion as she then said “it’s okay, I bought my own roll (there wasn’t one for me!) as I knew it would be lunchtime and I didn’t want to put you to any expense.” She then turned up her nose at jam or cheese, went in my fridge and took out a pack of ham and proceeded to fill her roll with that. I did say that it was supposed to be for our dinner and she replied “it’s okay I’ve left enough for Mrjade (my husband, her son).

when I was 20 I invited a friend into my parents home to wait whilst I got dressed as we were going out that night together. She left the living room, to go to the bathroom, for the loo we thought.

She was gone for ages, eventually I knocked on the bathroom door, she said come in, I went in and found her having a bath, soaking in a relaxed and casual way, having used all all of my Mum's expensive bath products!
I was so shocked, I apologised for interrupting her, and left!

We went out and said nothing about it, as though this was normal, so bloody British!

Well now. Our CF visiting family are due at lunchtime and will be staying until Tuesday. Very close relatives and a full house so one of those times when we accommodate for the wider family peace.

Let me tell you on Tuesday how it went. If its anything like some previous visits all or any of the following could happen.

Taking my debit card out of my purse to go and buy some wine. No permission. Not even a discussion.

Taking some of that wine to go and visit an old school friend for a couple of hours who lives 5 miles away and then stopping overnight there (unplanned). Meanwhile we have to look after their kids. Very whingey kids.

Taking some curtains down on the day of departure to take home because it was mentioned that we might be replacing them soon.

Accidentally mixing my Christmas presents up with theirs and shoving them in their car boot as they packed to leave on 28th December.

"Borrowing" some cat food to take home in case they could not find a shop on the way home. Again, no discussion and no permission.

Suggesting, while not taking no for an answer, to pay their DH a salary for 18 months through our business so he could get a better mortgage. The suggestion was to pay £8k a month which they would save and return to us next year when the mortgage came through. Clearly the cat food pales into insignificance against that one.

I’ve read all these and yours is first prize 🏆

I used to live overseas. Certain extended family would come to stay with us and for weeks on end, they would be chauffeured around, taken on days out, had breakfast, lunch and dinner cooked for them, taken out for meals and they did not spend a penny.

Apparently, I am inhospitable.

May have told this story here before, but...

Early in my relationship with now-DH, we had his parents to stay with us. I was young & eager to please, so I organised trips to nice places, did all the driving (only my car had 4 seats) & did all the cooking, even going down to the local supermarket between courses to buy something MIL said she fancied.

After their visit, word got back to me from SIL that when SIL asked MIL how her holiday had been, MIL said she supposed it was alright, but I didn't once bring them a cup of tea in bed in the morning, like I should have done.

On their subsequent visits, I left DH to take them tea in the mornings & I had a lie-in. One morning I heard MIL in the bathroom, filling & emptying the washbasin over & over & over again. I could only think she was trying to use up all the hot water so it would be cold for me when I got up, i.e. a passive-aggressive way of making me get up earlier. It didn't work. We had a massive hot water tank & by then I took no notice of the old bag.😂
