Autistic women assemble!

...only if and when you're not feeling antisocial and want the entire world to +%$¥ off, or course. 😉😆

A few of us were talking on another thread and thought it would be nice to have a support/ chat thread on here to share interests/ challenges/ parenting issues or whatever we feel like. A little community of autistic women on here that we can dip in and out of but will be supportive and friendly and people who actually get it.

Might also be a nice counterbalance to all of the horrific posts about autism that we find here so regularly!!

P.S. Have deliberately posted this in chat rather than in the ND Mumsnetters topic because it will hopefully reach more people who would like to join in. I didn't even realise that section existed for a long time and often miss threads there as they don't show in active and expect I'm not alone in that. However, in posting this here, we will be relying on the people with obnoxious and ignorant views about autism who so regularly post on Mumsnet, to demonstrate to us their allegedly superior empathy (ha!) and please just leave this thread alone: it's not for you. Many thanks!!

Can I please join? I'm undiagnosed but during the process of applying for my son's ehcp I realised that I am probably autistic too. I did well at school in the 80s/90s , was quiet and knew how to mask well or just disappear when I needed to so very much slipped under the radar. I'm in my 40s now and don't know if I have the energy to seek a diagnosis alongside dealing with my non verbal son's paperwork and admin.

Before my son came along I was a sen ta and always had a greater depth of understanding and patience with the children requiring extra support and they always felt comfortable with me. I guess it makes sense why now!

I love to be by the sea, my happy place. We got to watch a young seal who had got washed up on the beach make its way to the sea. We all have a special interest in the natural world so we were able to enjoy sharing lots of information and facts. Am away with my kids and husband and dog 🐕.

Welcome! 😊

That does make perfect sense! And means that your son is incredibly lucky to have you as a mum.

In fact one of my obsessions is photographing beaches. 😁

Cats?
I have any number of pictures of my cats.
Here's Linney, preparing to attack the DVD player.

I am so sorry to hear this, that sounds horrendous. Would it be possible to do just what you've said tonight: try to shut it all out and just take some time for yourself?

Thank you!

DH came home and talked me down, but I still have a knot in my stomach and I feel the adrenaline/cortisol swishing around.

I feel sometimes that I need to be in a mental hospital or somewhere similar to give me a brain brake. I need to step out of my head.

Hi, I never really post, but this feels like a space where I might be understood!

My happy place is also by the sea! Special interests include iron age archaeology, star wars (since I was about 10 yo, so I am very pleased it's so mainstream at the moment) and researching things! I also love Lego and rainbows (since watching the TV show rainbow as a little kid)- I have multiple pairs of rainbow pattern shoes!

That's exactly how I feel.

Nat6999 · 06/04/2023 19:21

Can I join please? I'm 57, was diagnosed in 2019.

Nepmarthiturn · 06/04/2023 19:21

@Afonavon that's great he's there with you and being supportive. It sounds like an awful lot for anybody to manage to cope with. I hope you are as ok as you can be in those circumstances.

I do often fantasise about a week in hospital just for a rest and no obligation to do anything. Until I remember that it would mean people everywhere and horrid bright lights and wafer thin duvets and sensory hell. 🤣

@TheShellBeach pretty cat, I miss a cat, my dog is not cat friendly at all and I miss the feline energy. Always had dogs and cats together in the past but alas not meant to be this time. Is this your only one or do you have more?

Nepmarthiturn · 06/04/2023 19:23

Welcome to @smileattherain and @Nat6999 !

And love the animal pics! 🐶🐱

@Nepmarthiturn - hospital is not kind to us is it? When I had my daughter I had to go in from a planned home birth, and almost from the moment she was delivered I was trying to get home as it was just sensory hell. I didn't even know I was Autistic then but I knew I needed to get out of there.

FriendsDrinkBook · 06/04/2023 19:25

Thank you for the welcome. I'm loving these beach pics. Very calming.

My happy place is sitting infront of my sewing machine listening to the sound of my favourite TV shows on repeat.

Wallstotheball · 06/04/2023 19:27

So many Austistic/ND women I know are too linked/influenced by a man, I couldn't possibly relate. Haven't RTFT so may be reading this all wrong.
