How are people feeling about Charles' coronation ?

newjobnewstartihope · 02/04/2023 10:08

Considering it's a few weeks away I've not heard any sort of excitement, any enthusiasm or much at all about it really!
Are the public totally over the royal family now, is it because it's Charles or is it because people are struggling to stay afloat financially?

@00100001 are you saying that businesses would close down and people lose their jobs if we didn't have a big coronation event? Which ones? Why?

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 16:20

@00100001 again, I'm not being antagonistic, I'm genuinely curious as this is not my area of expertise, and also I can be quite blunt without meaning to!

It's going to happen, so I suppose it will be in our faces unless we don earplugs and blinkers. My interest in it is zero, but it will be plugged to the Nth degree as the greatest event since sliced bread or something.

Anyway, regarding the portraits, they remind me of those countries that have big pics of their dictators on every wall, school, shop, etc. reminding the people who is boss, whether they like it or not, and never a bad word should be spoken lest they be thrown in jail. Think about that one....

I fail to see why a professional photograph would not suffice for a fraction of the price, but hey it's Chuck and he likes spending other people's money. A bit narcissistic to want your mugshot displayed also, in my humble opinion.

Especially when you are dirt plain and have not aged well. The late Queen was pleasing to look at if nothing else.

Mildly interested. As a poster said I like a bit of pageantry and music.

RestingRulers · 03/04/2023 18:48

Does anyone actually admire King Charles? I don't get why anyone would?
I can, just about, understand that some people might like the idea of a monarchy but I can't understand why anyone would like or respect King Charles.

I'm positively dislike him. I think he is greedy, old fashioned, hypercritical and pompous. He is ridiculously out of touch as well.

No.

But we already know that service businesses such as restaurants and hotels etc are struggling hugely.

Small companies will benefit... Off the top of my head, things like small bakers might get extra business by making cupcakes or whatever. Which would perhaps lead to repeat business etc.

So, a major national event, that (whether we are pro or anti royal) is a significant historical event, that is of global interest, can only be a good thing for the economy.

It's the same logic spend ££££ on the nYE fireworks. Should we do nothing? We're a global plain, London is one of the most important cities in the world. The UK needs to "keep up appearances" and put on a good show at the coronation.

We can't be spending every "spare" penny on the NHS/Schools. We all know throwing more and more money at these won't solve the problems.

I never liked him.

He was in his 30s, chasing teenage girls to exploit. He then cheated on his wife.

I don't want a politician instead.

I am going increasingly off William he is as woke a knob as Harry and Charles. The pegging rumours I don't take seriously, as unlike the tampon fethism we didn't get the transcript of the tapes and he married the mistress.

The tape where Diana says Camilla told her what more could she want than her children, I thought take your own advice Camilla.

It's not a celebration of a pair of cheats in this house, as much as I don't like Harry - he is the way he is because of this pair. I am more interested in the whole theatrical aspect.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 19:41

@00100001 thank you, that's interesting. Your initial post suggested that businesses would close and people lose jobs, rather than businesses increasing revenue & jobs. It will be really interesting to see how it pans out, with actual figures. Hopefully lots of 'ordinary' people will do well!

But I disagree that everyone is saying to give it to NHS/education. A few of us have suggested other ways of using the money, which I still think is a goer as an idea (I am not an economist obviously lol).

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 20:13

KC cares about the environment, the future, sustainability. He cares about his kids. He cares about doing the right thing. He talks to plants. He's articulate, sensitive, gawky, thoughtful & dutiful. He's perfectly human and daft & foolish (like most humans). He has a sense of humour. He is pompous... but he's not full of himself at all and can also be very down to Earth. He's not a narcissist or interested in power. He's not just a product of his class or situation. I think it took a lot of strength to stand up for himself with such an overbearing father & the unkind school experiences he had.

I'm about as character imperfect (probably far worse really) as KC so I don't mind him being human.

I am reminded me of the question asked to Katie Hopkins: Who did she admire, who would she praise? She could only name Maggie Thatcher & not with enthusiasm. MNers are like that. No one meets moaner MNr standards, which undermines everything MNers say, so their perspective ends up being pointless, lacks value or meaning.

I don’t know, I was once walking a long-distance path with a friend in a fairly remote bit of the west of Ireland and we stopped off to say hello to another old friend who ran a BandB on her farm. There was a tourist from Surbiton sitting in the TV room with the curtains closed, glued to the Prince William/Kate Middleton wedding. Apparently he’d been in there since dawn,

What a remarkably silly post. It would make very little difference if the latest person on the throne was some kind of icon of human perfection. The point is that it is a fundamentally undemocratic, anachronistic, expensive institution, where ridiculous privilege adheres to a bloodline. And you get who you get - whoever is next of that bloodline, be they dutiful drone, Nazi sympathiser, known friend of underage sex traffickers. You don’t get to choose.

lljkk · 03/04/2023 22:20

I guess... the gist of PP is "I hate the Royals (personally, not just in principle) no matter who they are or what they do or don't do because they represent a terrible institution."

Personally, I try not to have an opinion about the institution. It would be like a visiting dog pissing on the carpet 5 seconds after walking in the door. Not my place. Native Brits can have opinions on the institution or not, as they please. I prefer not to.

RestingRulers · 03/04/2023 22:26

@lljkk That is a thoughtful reply and I can see where you are coming from. I think he does genuinely care about the future and the environment but I struggle with the fact that even though I think he cares he doesn't actually set a good example. If he gets this Royal exemption]] repealed that would help but there are plenty of other examples. The King and the Crown are one of the biggest UK land owners. Why doesn't he hand over that land back to the country.
He and his sons don't fly around the world killing animals like they used to but they still love to kill grouse etc on their land. Apparently they've already introduced the grandkids to shoots.

He should pay tax too. I know he voluntarily pays income tax but why is it 'voluntary' why doesn't he only do it voluntarily.

I think he is giving money raised from leasing "his" land to off shore wind farms back for the public good but why doesn't he give the shore and waters around Britain back the the people of Britain. Why does he want to keep them.

I disagree. An awful lot of people, including me, had some respect for the Queen even though I despise the Monarchy. King Charles is a massive hypocrite though and looks after his own interests before that of he Uk.

I bought a Sophie Allport coronation tray forour afternoon tea, it was sold out really fast, so people are buying items.

As I say I am no fan of the man, for me it is about tradition and theatrics.

We will bring out the tray for Williams coronation with a some small bits I have from QE2.

Disgusted and disappointed that people don’t see them for what they are. We should be angry with these people, not celebrating them. This guy puts it across very well.
