How are people feeling about Charles' coronation ?

Considering it's a few weeks away I've not heard any sort of excitement, any enthusiasm or much at all about it really!
Are the public totally over the royal family now, is it because it's Charles or is it because people are struggling to stay afloat financially?

I'm anti royal so against the whole thing but I'll take the extra bank holiday. The money being spent is grotesque though.

WeAreTheHeroes · 03/04/2023 08:05

Bit hypocritical though.

What, to take the bank holiday 😄

Hypocrisy would be taking the bank holiday while telling other people not to. A person taking one of the few benefits to a situation they're not in a position to individually change isn't hypocrisy.

I'm looking forward to it. I like seeing the outfits and tiaras, same as any other celebrity event. The money spent is a drop in the ocean (£100million is around 0.01% of annual government spending) so that doesn't bother me tbh.

A drop in the ocean?? In this time of severe crisis? £100 million just so someone can place a diamond studded crown on Charle’s head - a man with utterly immense personal wealth, to declare him king? So many poverty stricken people - hungry and cold women, men and children, could be fed with that money, and helped out in so many more other ways. So many, many people can’t even to rub £2 together - they are literally counting every single, damn penny! Now, you tell these very people that £100 million is a drop in the ocean. Go on.

Roussette · 03/04/2023 08:46

I find it weird and odd that posters on here are dismissing £100 million (plus £8million for the portraits) as nothing, no use, won't help, who cares, drop in the ocean.

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2023 08:48

The estimated boost came from this article.

If the cost brings a boost then isn’t that good?

Not everyone here might enjoy it, no one has to, but it attracts people from o/s too and people watch it

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 08:49

I thought my suggestion of funding for small community groups was a decent one. A few thousand here and there could make a real difference. It doesn't have to be "fund the entire NHS or have a coronation".

Presidential inaugurations cost state money too you know, and are a lot more frequent than coronations.

But at least a president would be democratically elected, using a democratic system, using the citizens votes. Charles is the head of state because of privilege of birth, absolutely nothing else. We need move with the times.

I think Charles is probably a good person but I have no interest in the royal family so am going away to escape it all.

Why do you think that? Surely a good person wouldn't want to hoard all that unearned wealth and would want to stop the ridiculousness of having a monarchy.

He is exempt from paying tax??? Wouldn't a decent person want to? ( and yes I know that he pays so income tax voluntarily but still)

He is not a good man in any way or form.

Would you behave like he does because I certainly wouldn't. I'd be embarrassed to have people looking 'up' at me just because of who gave birth to me.

Sloth66 · 03/04/2023 08:59

I’ve read the cost is likely to be around 50-100 million, which seems awful given the current situation of the country.

Id like a Republic, I find this unelected hugely wealthy family an embarrassment with their mediocrity and grasping behaviour.

MrsSweatyBetty · 03/04/2023 09:01

I'd strongly prefer to live in a democracy.

Lindy2 · 03/04/2023 09:15

I'm looking forward to watching. We're having a street party too. Hopefully the weather will be better by then.

Ok, where should the £100m be spent instead?

On people who actually need the money - poverty stricken, hungry and homeless people, who are surviving day to day, needing immediate help, for example. We could start with that.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 09:46

@AlexiaR @00100001 I'm sure we all know of local (to us, respectively) community organisations that could do with a few extra quid. It could have been a fund that places applied to, like with the Lottery. I don't know why some posters are insisting that the money can only be used for the coronation. It's not some special currency that has no other value 🤔

Exactly this. Thousands of charities and organisations helping people in real need , throughout the UK, they could really do with this money, to carry on with their vital work.

AMealASucculentChineseMeal · 03/04/2023 09:59

@AlexiaR yep! I mean, if someone thinks that it's better to spend it on the coronation than on those things, they should just own that opinion (that they are entitled to have) and stop pretending there are no other options.

YogaLite · 03/04/2023 11:10

I am just looking forward to see what Haz&Meg will come up with to tone down the celebrations 🤔

I'm looking forward to the Coronation special of The Windsors Smile

Me too! The Meghan/Harry one was hilarious!

I wonder though if they will choose to not feature Charles in future episodes, just like the Queen and PP were off screen.

RosesInWater · 03/04/2023 11:41

It's going to happen, so I suppose it will be in our faces unless we don earplugs and blinkers. My interest in it is zero, but it will be plugged to the Nth degree as the greatest event since sliced bread or something.

Anyway, regarding the portraits, they remind me of those countries that have big pics of their dictators on every wall, school, shop, etc. reminding the people who is boss, whether they like it or not, and never a bad word should be spoken lest they be thrown in jail. Think about that one....

I fail to see why a professional photograph would not suffice for a fraction of the price, but hey it's Chuck and he likes spending other people's money. A bit narcissistic to want your mugshot displayed also, in my humble opinion.

gkhg · 03/04/2023 15:11

@00100001 100 million pounds would not make 'zero' difference to anyone. That could change a fair few peoples lives who are poverty stricken through no fault of their own, could really help specific departments of the nhs. How much money do you have that you think £100 million is nothing?!

Ok. Which department of the NHS, bearing in mind the NHs costs £190bn

Why is the money better spent there rather than to boost economy by £1bn?

Yes, and thousands of businesses will make use of this too. Keeping businesses open and people in jobs and the economy boosted is not a bad thing.

@00100001 what's the data around return on investment for events like these? No snide, am genuinely interested and you seem knowledgeable.
