Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

The obsession with driving/belief that everybody needs to be able to drive. Some of us live in cities!

Yes this!

Also some people simply shouldn’t drive. When someone posts that they’ve no spatial awareness, don’t feel safe driving and have had 629276310 lessons but just don’t get it why on Earth do people insist they must continue learning or they’re failing as an adult?

Some people are safer not driving. We’re all safer if some people don’t drive!

I find this really disgusting. Plus, it has the exact opposite of the desired effect. They think it makes them look super intelligent because they spot a spelling mistake instantly. In fact, it’s the opposite - it makes them look sadly a bit stupid as they’re not capable of simple contextual reading comprehension.

Yes, truly intelligent people IME don't show off like that. It's also reprehensible that they were doing that to that poor woman.

usernamechanged1 · 31/03/2023 23:35

Everyone knows the Royal Family personally.

“Camilla doesn’t eat meat more than three times a week. It’s always been a bugbear of Charles who I know worries about her iron levels, but he’s let it slide for the most part.”

”Harry’s completely shut his brother out since he married Meghan. They were so close before, they could talk about anything.”

”Kate has been under so much stress recently with her visits to the safari park and the Girl Guides museum. It hasn’t helped that Louis has been playing up.”

Of course not - in my experience really intelligent people understand that others may not have had the same opportunities/education/ability as they have had, and the most intelligent people realise they have something to learn from everyone and that they don’t look any taller for making others small.

I think it just makes them look vile because they absolutely know what’s being said. They’re just using the opportunity for a cheap kick at someone already down.

It would be less awful if they were that thick genuinely, but I don’t believe they are.

Rainallnight · 31/03/2023 23:37

That all children will do as they’re because their parents tell them, and also consequences.

Rainallnight · 31/03/2023 23:37

Do as they’re told!!

The complete contrast between the fact so many people on here are super intelligent and earning well over 100k, yet if someone distressed posts “brought” instead of “bought” they’re simply unable to understand the sentence…

Will never forget the poor woman posting about her partner turning on here and thumping on her who posted in a panic that they’d “brought a house recently” and all her money was in it. the number of number of faux confused “sorry, where did you bring your house?” posts was vile.

There was a similar one recently. I think the woman’s husband had injured their baby. She’d written “aloud” instead of “allowed” and someone asked for clarification. 🥴

Health Visitors are ill informed interfering old bats.

Always get a rescue dog, preferably a greyhound.

That reminds me of the old genital pedantry you used to get on here, although I have to say I have seen that in a while.

"But how could he have seen her vagina? It's on the inside?"

Emerald237 · 31/03/2023 23:38

How people are so adamant that the minute someone turns 18 they should pay 50% of their wages as rent to their parents or they should be turfed out on the street.

OnaBegonia · 31/03/2023 23:39

When someone (usually Scottish) uses a phrase (commonly used) and the next comment is 'I've never heard that', it's so condescending and fake.

Jeez that’s horrid.
People really can be awful.

you have to wonder what kind of person gets a kick from that kind of nastiness.

Amen to all of that.

DarkDarkNight · 31/03/2023 23:40

Just working my way through the thread, so don’t know if it’s been mentioned after page 1 but for me it’s banning visitors when you have a baby.

Never heard of anyone doing this in real life. Where I live you are absolutely inundated with visitors, even before you’ve left hospital. If you have a passing acquaintance to someone chances are they’re popping round to your house to see the baby. I find the idea of banning visitors really strange, and think it’s really cruel to keep grandparents waiting.

MIL are the spawn of the devil.

But only her MIL, his MIL is a total saint and he has to tolerate her presence in his home whenever she feels like it.

HighInfidelity · 31/03/2023 23:43

The pedantry is annoying when it’s about something trivial. It’s disgusting when it’s on a thread that’s about something that’s actually serious and posters are trying to undermine the OP.

On the names thing. I once went out with some work colleagues for drinks a few years back now. One of my colleagues was refusing to say what her middle name was because she thought it was too posh and she was embarrassed. One of my other colleagues decided to Google posh names to guess at what it might be and the first result was a MN baby names thread. He screwed up his face in confusion and was like “nobody is actually called any of these names.”

Not answering the phone and door

Mutual favours dont exist, everyone is a CF

You shouldn't be friends with school mums, colleagues, neighbours, family etc

If you've ever been nervous, uncertain or cautious about any aspect of driving ever you are a loser who shouldn't be driving at all.

Sierra26 · 31/03/2023 23:44

“What did they say when you asked them about it?”

Purplebunnie · 31/03/2023 23:45

That all cat owners are irresponsible, should keep their cats indoors and if let out the owners should come round to your house and clear up any mess or that people just shouldn't have cats

Its brutal isn’t it?

or ( as mentioned upthread) the ‘and why did you have children with this man?’ about anyone who has had the ‘stupidity’ to have a child with someone who has subsequently turned into an arsehole.

especially if he sometimes didn’t do the housework…’how could you ignore those red flags?’

I’d love to know who these women are with perfect husbands and perfectly high standards who have never mis judged / been fooled by anyone? I’ve never met one in real life!

fairycupcakes · 31/03/2023 23:47

When someone calls a baby name “wet” It absolutely baffles me 😂

danceyourselfdizzy1 · 31/03/2023 23:47

MrsR87 · 31/03/2023 23:47

The amount of man bashing/LTB and mil bashing that goes on here. Also the amount of times people are told to go no contact with their own family over something ridiculous like “my mum refused to cut her once in a lifetime cruise short by five days so that she could honour her babysitting duties that she does every weekend.”
