Mumsnet “norms” that annoy you most

For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

"They might have had a hidden disability" is an excuse for almost anything.

If you don't actively want to catch Covid you must have health anxiety and need to get some therapy.

Everyone's got a horse and that is completely unremarkable.

If you don't like driving you need to (a) pull yourself together and make yourself drive anyway to avoid being a CF (even if you've never accepted a lift in your life), but also (b) surrender your driving licence instantly because people like you are not safe on the roads.

Wearing trainers with everything. In real life I don't know many adults who do this. "Which trainers should I wear with this frilly pink satin dress?"

Don't call him Gary if you're always going to call him Gaz - just call him Gaz on the birth certificate. It's silly to give someone a "proper" name they'll never use.

Husband busy at work? He's having an affair. Husband spends more time than you'd like out running? He's having an affair. Husband missed the bin with his crisp packet? He's having an affair.

Dogs are the devil's spawn, so many dog haters on here.

😂 sooo true! You’d think people were keeping lions in their houses the way people respond on any dog posts of a dog that’s even slightly misbehaved

It’s wild that when someone’s inconsiderate husband turns the bedroom light on at 3am, the poster says “could you please turn that off?”. When their husband is lying playing Xbox while their 4 children run around making her demented, she asks him “please could I have help?”.

Nobody is saying please in those situations. I think it’s an attempt to garner support by making themselves out to be the innocent, non-confronting party.

See also: gently. ‘So I gently asked SIL not to punch my child in the face, and gently explained that it’s inappropriate, and she turned round and knocked me out!’

Why do people do everything sooooo gently?

OP asks if they are unreasonable.

Everyone says yes apart from 1 poster.

OP responds to the one poster (who inevitably said ‘I don’t know why you’re getting such a harsh response) and ignores the 10 pages of other posters who tell them to get a grip.

OP then is never to be seen again.

'Why did you have a child/get pregnant from this man?'

I mean, it does seem to be the norm on here 💁🏽‍♀️

A post the other day began 'he was useless from the start'

Mind boggling

Getting therapy, particularly family therapy or therapy for eating too much. Because of course everyone can access and afford this.

I get therapy for eating too much and its free, was a referral threw my GP 😬

The undereating ones - where anything more than a single fish finger is grossly excessive

Anyone who has "cheeky" drinks

Most of the name ones - "a brother for Rubella and Cappuccino"

On Mumsnet about 90% of the child population has SEN. And it's always somehow relevant to the OP, whatever the OP is!

Anycolouryoulike · 31/03/2023 23:26

Marching about.

MNetters are always either marching or getting marched back to somewhere.

Even if he’s not having an offer, immediately LTB!

I thought you meant baby showers 😂

Everyone has ADHD.

Also, MNers love WFH because it means they don’t have to interact with their colleagues (who they don’t like) and they avoid the school run because they have to interact with school mums (don’t like them either) and they don’t answer to the door to their neighbours (also don’t like) and have gone NC with their family (hate them). It must be very lonely!!

SO True!!! I don't know a single person who is no/low contact with an immediate family member IRL but on here is seems to be the norm. If you can't do that for some reason ( like your mum minds your child) then you go "grey rock". 😅

The complete contrast between the fact so many people on here are super intelligent and earning well over 100k, yet if someone distressed posts “brought” instead of “bought” they’re simply unable to understand the sentence…

Will never forget the poor woman posting about her partner turning on here and thumping on her who posted in a panic that they’d “brought a house recently” and all her money was in it. the number of number of faux confused “sorry, where did you bring your house?” posts was vile.

TheBlonde23 · 31/03/2023 23:30

Kanaloa · 31/03/2023 21:38

You forgot the hollow legged kids so skinny you can see their ribs (always have to say you can see their ribs) who can put away ten tonnes of food per day. Plus obviously the ‘tall, strapping’ teen boys who eat a loaf of bread with every meal. And they play rugby too!

Omg this 😆

NotAnotherBathBomb · 31/03/2023 23:30

Calling basic things 'a treat'

'I save coffee pods to have once a week as a treat'. What a sad little life, Jane.

Calling anything above basic 'posh'. The only person I heard use this IRL was the cringiest person I knew, wanted everyone one to know when she'd paid £1 more for something.

AllCatsAreBeautiful · 31/03/2023 23:31

The obsession with driving/belief that everybody needs to be able to drive. Some of us live in cities!

TheBlonde23 · 31/03/2023 23:32

Teenage boys who drink a litre of milk a day and eat 3 extra meals in addition to multiple servings of the main ones 🙄🙄

NotAnotherBathBomb · 31/03/2023 23:32

Fanacapan · 31/03/2023 23:21

The one thing more hated than dogs is the MIL. Shortsighted considering you’re likely to be one one day!

Also, those with a MIL likely have a mother who's a MIL herself. She's perfect then?

I find this really disgusting. Plus, it has the exact opposite of the desired effect. They think it makes them look super intelligent because they spot a spelling mistake instantly. In fact, it’s the opposite - it makes them look sadly a bit stupid as they’re not capable of simple contextual reading comprehension.
