For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

I ❤️JKR

Sex is binary.

Still Spartacus.

Sex is binary 🤷🏻‍♀️

Where is this mysterious third sex you’re alluding to?

Nobody on Mumsnet discusses, they confront.

Or they 'call out', every time I read that a little voice in my head says En garde and I visualise fencers at Heidelberg with fetching scars down their cheek.

I don't know why but when people respond to another reply 'this' or 'this in spades'. It really irks me

”This with bells on” makes me die inside.

The moment anyone mentions their dog has so much as growled at someone then it must be put to sleep or rehomed immediately (like the rescue centres are empty and just hoping an abandoned dog will come along because they are sat twiddling their thumbs).
One small argument with dh or partner and it’s LTB.
How seemingly 95% of Mumnetters have degrees, have fantastic and hugely enjoyable ‘career’s’ from which they earn 80k+ per year with partners on 100k+ per year and dc all excelling at school, are happy and well rounded kids who all help out at home and keep their bedrooms perfectly tidy.
Seemingly no working class folk on mn earning an average salary with average ‘jobs’.

"Just take in ironing or do some dog walking" when someone is absolutely skint.

As if getting the insurance and equipment and advertising needed is a viable option for someone who can't afford to eat.

Also, 'could you build an annexe to take in a lodger?'

The inability to understand why other people like things you don’t. Bags, shoes, cats, Pandora, hummus, etc… AIBU to not understand why people like…? Yes! Yes, you bloody are!!

Just move. Like moving isn’t expensive.

Spa day. My idea of torture.

To be fair, @Thursa hating spas is easily in the top three of MN obsessions ( second only to never answering the door)

The private school comparison chat.

“Pondering whether to send DS 11 to Rye College or Twickenfolk. Rye is closer to our main home but we can make Twickenfolk work if DH takes the people carrier on a Tuesday and I move DD’s fencing lesson back an hour. The dog walker has already agreed to let herself into the house and seems happy to receive the weekly Ocado delivery, which is a huge weight off my mind.

The fees are similar; only £22K a year, but we’ve heard whispers of horseplay at Rye and I’m worried that DS will be intimidated by the older boys. He’s a meek, gentle child with an aptitude for science.”

The MN buzzwords

The condescending use of ‘please use critical thinking’.

'Read the room' is another one rarely seen anywhere else, or maybe I'm failing to read the room!

anonymous98 · 31/03/2023 23:17

'Are you very young OP?'

'How old are you OP?'

WunWun · 31/03/2023 23:17

"I'm going to go against the grain here"... generally only said when there is about a 50:50 split in opinion.

Stravaig · 31/03/2023 23:17

On Mumsnet it's apparently normal for women's brains to fall out of their vaginas so they can have unprotected sex with the first abusive lout who wanders by - and the only acceptable response is 'congratulations on your pregnancy, how wonderful.' 🤯

AlwaysLatte · 31/03/2023 23:17

washing bedding, towels, clothes every time you use them once. I simply don’t think there are enough hours in the day to do this for a family of 4.
I honestly don't understand this. I have quite enough washing with towels all being washed once or twice a week (mostly once). With DS15 having 2 showers a day and everyone else having 1 we'd be having the machine on incessantly!

elliejjtiny · 31/03/2023 23:18

Eating 1/2 a biscuit and putting the rest back in the packet.

Not answering the door.

Being smug/patronising to professionals doing their job, e.g. Drs, hv, teachers etc.

Anycolouryoulike · 31/03/2023 23:18

Average jobs are always described as crappy or shit jobs. Mumsnetters only ever worked in supermarkets while they were studying for a degree in a RG university.

pinkpotatoez · 31/03/2023 23:18

I also think that Mumsnet has the worst advice on names, I've never met anyone in person with the same taste in names as people on the baby name advice posts

NotAnotherBathBomb · 31/03/2023 23:18

Growlybear83 · 31/03/2023 22:14

The abbreviations! Is it really so difficult to write husband, daughter, father, or friend?

It's the 'D' for me in front of everything 🤢

People writing posts, lots of others giving lots of advice,OP comes back a few times to comment/reply to others then completely ghosts us all.
I feel completely used for my pearls of wisdom...
I'm a nosey cow so I need to know what happened in the end!!🤣

I also think that Mumsnet has the worst advice on names, I've never met anyone in person with the same taste in names as people on the baby name advice posts

I always think this is because the majority of people will like the common names in their area that they hear a lot, like the ‘top 10’ type of names. But realistically you don’t need to post on mumsnet to ask if Oliver or Alice is an acceptable baby name - you know it is because you hear it all the time. So I don’t think there’s a bizarre amount of people calling their kids Araminta and Hercule-Michele. It’s just that those names are more likely to be ones you might want opinions on because you don’t get the validation that they’re useable by hearing them all the time.

Katypyee · 31/03/2023 22:33

The rampant transphobia against trans women.

oh yes, makes me wonder if the people expressing these views have ever met a trans person in real life. I know several, all of them gentle souls who just want to live their lives on their own terms. One was driven out of her flat by the most vile neighbours who threatened to kill her.

chipsarnie · 31/03/2023 23:20

'Tinkly laugh'

Honestly. Fuck the fucking fuck off to fuckchester on the fucking fuckbus

Fanacapan · 31/03/2023 23:21

The one thing more hated than dogs is the MIL. Shortsighted considering you’re likely to be one one day!

usernamechanged1 · 31/03/2023 23:22

It’s wild that when someone’s inconsiderate husband turns the bedroom light on at 3am, the poster says “could you please turn that off?”. When their husband is lying playing Xbox while their 4 children run around making her demented, she asks him “please could I have help?”.

Nobody is saying please in those situations. I think it’s an attempt to garner support by making themselves out to be the innocent, non-confronting party.

The phrases

not your circus not your monkeys

Kanaloa · 31/03/2023 23:22

Don’t think I’ve explained that right - what I mean is I don’t think unusual names are the ‘mumsnet norm,’ but more that only those who are into more unusual names would be more likely to post for advice or opinions.

What annoys me is the snobby, grotesque attitudes over perfectly normal and very well used names. It makes those posters look very stupid and also very classist and some of the time quite racist.
