For me it’s the utterly obscure baby names. We’ve all seen them and I’m quite sure nobody uses them in real life. Yet on MN, it’s apparently standard.

Honourable mention to the 50% of posters whose husbands are earning upwards of £100K too.

That a man who works less than full time is a cocklodger but a woman who has done the same is entirely blameless because 'she gave up her earning power for the kiddies' boak

No, to benefit his career. Not because she wanted to give up work and be a sahm. Right yeah.

Not answering the door.
Only on Mumsnet have I ever heard of folk not answering the door

I doubt sort of thing people admit to in RL

I posted many years ago about my cousin’s ex-wife. The knots people tied themselves in to prove that she was the injured party - people who have never met anyone involved in the scenario - were ridiculous. Someone even I couldn’t possibly know that she’d cheated on him and how could I be so sure that my cousin hadn’t made the entire thing up? (The fact that she left him for this man and that her adultery was the core issue in their divorce case was apparently not proof enough.)

The fact that she had an affair would have had bugger all impact on the court case. What are you on about?

Not answering the door.

I don't answer my door if I'm not expecting anyone.

But I just don't answer the door. I don't post on MN about being terrified that someone knocked on my door. I assume it was a mistake or someone I don't want to talk to like a religious group, salesperson or something.

That's the difference. Its not unusual for someone to not answer the door, it is unusual for someone to not answer the door then be posting on MN shaking and terrified wondering who it was. And posters advising "call 101 and log it".

Smogtopia · 01/04/2023 15:05

The names -

Hepzibah
Caroline
Isolde
Hebe

Nobody calls their children this - yet the suggested rate of the above names would put them in the top 10

It would have done many years ago. I divorced my ex on grounds of adultery in the 90s.

Yes.
you can divorce on the grounds of divorce

but has squat all impact on court re financial order and child arrangements

I would actually disagree - I think it is relatively unusual for somebody to regularly refuse to answer the door because nobody has scheduled to knock on it. Most people I know answer the door if they hear it being knocked and they are home and able to answer it. To me it would be way more unusual be round at someone’s house and see them just sitting watching telly and saying ‘no, nobody has scheduled for a door meeting so I will not answer it.’

Kanaloa · 01/04/2023 15:14

I mean it could be something you may need. I’ve had neighbours knock for various reasons, people to give me notice that work will be completed on my street in future, and even once a police van that had accidentally run into my car! There could be many reasons somebody is knocking on the door without advance notice.

Not In the 1990s!!

amicissimma · 01/04/2023 15:22

I always think the not answering the door thing is bizarre. Years ago someone knocked on my door unexpectedly. It was a guy telling me that my car was parked next to his van (or, rather, 'is that your car?'), which was on fire, thus giving me the chance to move my car away before the fire spread. If I hadn't answered the door I would have lost my car.

Villssev · 01/04/2023 15:23

Thankfully in the 1990s… you were not financially penalised or re stricted child access for leaving a marriage because you had found another partner!!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 01/04/2023 15:26

Flossflower · 01/04/2023 10:25

Well said

Oh that's reminded me of a few

People who think childfree mean childhater

People who ask 'but what are all these childfree people doing on a site for parents?' like it's a question that hasn't been done to death

The use of the words 'hate' and 'hatred' for 'has a different opinion from me.' You're using one of the richest and most expressive languages in the world and all you can come up with is 'hate' all the time.

@Smogtopia· Caroline? That's my daughter and one of my friends' daughter's name. Not desperately rare around here at least. I agree I've not met any of the others though.

Apart from it literally being the grounds on which the divorce was granted. That’s what I’m “on about”.

Robinni · 01/04/2023 15:32

“Found another partner”

What… this is not going to Waitrose and deciding you’d rather the whole meal over multigrain bread….

Anyone with a shred of decency, manages to exercise self control and maintain respect for themselves and the person they are married to - “finding” another partner once they’ve separated from their spouse and the relationship is irretrievable.

Anyone who does otherwise calls into question their character and ability to act responsibly. And may inflict severe psychological injury on said spouse such that financial compensation could be deemed appropriate.

So, what you’re saying is in the 90s you were allowed to act like an irresponsible, thoughtless, tool and have no penalty for such behaviour, seems wrong to me.

I find it very unusual for someone not to answer their door and as I said Mumsnet is the only place I've ever heard of anyone doing it.

Having an affair isn’t necessarily reason to be criticised. If posters were supporting her then likely the devil was in the detail re your cousin’s behaviour!
