Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Barbecues on the beach. I live in a seaside town and these are seemingly totally acceptable now. So smelly. They really spoil the beach for me.

Alidalivali · 24/03/2023 21:29

Fat shaming. It appears to be socially acceptable to villify fat people for being visibly "unhealthy" and lacking intelligence, whatever the reason for overeating, and "putting extra strain on the NHS".

I'm not saying that it isn't true, but why should a fat person be a social pariah more than anyone slim but with a less immediately visible unhealthy personal dysfunction that could lead to multiple co-morbidities?

Fat people are an easy and obvious target and the population deems shaming them perfectly acceptable.

Blueuggboots · 24/03/2023 21:30

Marijuana.

@DidyouNO I agree there should be plently of dog free spaces available. And I'm very sorry for your son. But there's no reason someone should't have a dog themselves in a space thats dog friendly. I'm severly allergic to cashew nuts so can't go into thai resteraunts because being around the cooking makes my face swell up. I dont expect other people to stop having thai food

To be fair, it's perfectly possible to avoid ever going into a Thai restaurant and not miss out on much. Dogs are everywhere, so it's rather more of a problem.

Susansmith1949 · 24/03/2023 21:31

People who spend their free time on mumsnet complaining about truly harmless things. Honestly about 80% of you should take a long hard look in the mirror. The majority of this thread reads like a bunch old women complaining about anything that annoys them about young people. Half of these answers aren’t even things that are socially acceptable anyway, it’s just people moaning about things which don’t harm anybody in any way. Nipples visible through a shirt? Tight leggings? People using your first name? Stopping your trolley too suddenly?!? Jesus Christ get a life. Everybody finds people playing music out loud on the bus annoying - it’s not “socially acceptable”. There are real problems in this world and you lot have gone mad. Praying for all of you. So much jealousy and petty hatred here I’m losing faith in humanity.

Being drunk.

Betting shop/gambling adverts

Speeding vehicles .

IWasFunBeforeMum · 24/03/2023 20:10

Dickwads who sit in coffee shops alone taking up tables of 4!!!

Coffee shops that only have one table for two.

Coconut80 · 24/03/2023 21:32

Love these threads,

Every ig woman being privately diagnosed with ADHD, these referrals now clog the NHS,

airport bad behaviour- queue jumping, physically pushing their case into you in a q as if I can move anywhere. Badly behaved kids ignored by their parents. The fifty thousand visits to the toilet some people make on the plane

Lack of manners when eg you hold a door open honestly is a thankyou too much.

Ridiculous trans fashion, awful fetishism of women by vile Eddie izzard and Sam Smith.

The endless need to chill. My kids do one task a day then need to chill watching hours of netflix.

Nicola Sturgeon and what she tried to do to women with her gender reform bill.

My energy bills how the fuck can the gov do this to us,increase the cap when we are all struggling.

The cost of normal food bread, butter, chickpeas boring stuff all rocketing

Lillith111 · 24/03/2023 21:33

@lieselotte I take your point but still feel like there are lots of dog free places/cafes.

adulthumanfemalemum · 24/03/2023 21:36

Smoking and especially flicking butts on the floor.

Customer service people on phone or live chat insisting on asking how you are today before allowing you to tell them the reason you need their help. You're not my friend and you don't care how I am, and if I wasn't okay I definitely wouldn't tell you!

Crumpleton · 24/03/2023 21:39

LakeTiticaca · 24/03/2023 18:45

Smoking weed in public, or anywhere tbh.

This is so common now.
Walk past a row of traffic and even the drivers are smoking it.

grumpybrandley · 24/03/2023 21:39

Idling in cars. Especially outside schools but to be honest I hate it everywhere.

Possibly more controversial but single occupancy cars. If you're the only person in a car that seats 5 then I think you should have an exceptional reason to justify it beyond convenience.

So single people should never be able to drive anywhere ?

ginghamstarfish · 24/03/2023 21:47

Dogs everywhere, off lead where they shouldn't be, in shops, cafes, horrible. I live in a rural area and lots of farmers have their sheep mauled and killed. Even people get killed by them, with increasing frequency but nobody cares. Manky things. The world would be better off without them.

Susansmith1949 · 24/03/2023 21:50

I feel the same about the majority of this thread. Truly depressing. Live and let live

vera99 · 24/03/2023 21:52

Hating on urban foxes calling them vermin.

Xtraincome · 24/03/2023 21:52

Going to get flamed:

  • multiple kids by multiple dads. I don't mean 2x2 I mean like 4 kids by 4 different dads

Other:

  • SM influencer being a career choice
  • smoking weed in the street
  • hen parties which cost £££s and are tacky AF
  • babies with pierced ears
Goodread1 · 24/03/2023 21:53

@Autienotnautie

Yes can't stand Passive Aggressive Twattish behaviour too,
Or ridcule someone under disguise of joke, but hyper sensitive take things wrong way, when it relates to them,

Have you noticed that?

Thought it was just me,

Hiphipbirthday · 24/03/2023 21:53

Using your phone / talking on your phone whilst being served in a shop / cafe / pharmacy etc.

TheGander · 24/03/2023 21:54

Betting shops on every high street everywhere. When there are 100s of 1000s of seriously addicted adults and it destroys lives. Betting shop logos on premiership team footballers’ jerseys. Betting ads on TV. Betting ads when you watch a DIY video on YouTube. Etc etc.

Goodread1 · 24/03/2023 21:26

@Chilloutsnow

Thats an eye opener !

Blimey I have never heard of it bring socially acceptable at work places for women to let Rip,
Certainly not where I worked, L.o.l 😅
Just curious what kind of work do you do then?

Honestly what is the difference between a man farting and a woman farting?

vera99 · 24/03/2023 21:55

Thinking that the Royal Family are anything to be proud of when they are in fact privileged, entitled parasites.

magicthree · 24/03/2023 21:56

What's wrong with topless men?? No-one turns a hair where I live (not the UK), it's hardly offensive.

People smoking in the street don't bother me either. Some of you seem to be very intolerant.

auberJohn · 24/03/2023 21:56

People using "in terms of". My kids can speak perfectly fine without having to use the lazy idiom "in terms of", I'm sure adults can too.

EmmaEmerald · 24/03/2023 21:56

Re men pissing in the street, pop up urinals have legitimised it. For those lucky enough not to have seen it, it doesn't have a door. When the city actual provides those - like in Paris too - it's obvious that men will just pee on the street.
