Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Agree about topless men. And especially men who show off their bulging muscles- I find that off-putting rather than the reverse.

Parking bikes on the pavement in a position where they block access for pedestrians passing by.

Runners who don't look where they're going and risk knocking people down (a friend was knocked down and injured by such a person).

Pressing people to celebrate/ divulge their birthday if they don't want to.

Nah, not the "bulging" over-pumped muscles - more a body well looked after, think Strictly Come Dancing professional men for example!

echt · 24/03/2023 20:50

People you don't know who phone you and ask you who you without introducing themselves.

It was Business Communications BTEC 1st, which I used to teach, telephone etiquette for the phoner to introduce themselves to the the phonee. It's the electronic equivalent of wanting to get inside someone's house. Say who you are and what you want so the phonee can decide whether to take it futrher.

And yes, I know I've made some words up.

SgtCawood · 24/03/2023 20:51

Another vote for parking on pavements. Idling engines. Driving journeys under a mile.

cato40 · 24/03/2023 20:51

Cheaters especially those married and with children, I wouldn't mind if they had to reimburse the people whose lives they've ruined!

Greensleeves · 24/03/2023 20:52

Dog shit. I know all MN dog owners are as pure as the driven snow, but out here in the real world nobody seems to bother cleaning it up any more.

Teenage girls who screech like Blackadder's goddaughter Millicent in public, especially on public transport. They make my fucking ears bleed.

RedRobyn2021 · 24/03/2023 20:54

Sleep training babies

Giving pets away when a family brings a new baby home

Coercing women into unnecessary inductions

Muu · 24/03/2023 20:54

Being glued to your phone.

Autienotnautie · 24/03/2023 20:54

Hugging/kissing friends and extended family
Small talk
Splitting the bill

Kate0902900908 · 24/03/2023 20:54

Eh? Pregnancy surrogacy? You can’t be serious

Autienotnautie · 24/03/2023 20:56

Indoorcatmum · 24/03/2023 18:48

Hugging and cheek-kissing strangers.

Offering/sharing a sip of your drink to try.

Foods that smell in the cinema.

Glad it's not just me

overthinkersanonnymus · 24/03/2023 20:57

Alcohol. It's wild to me thst we're encouraged to drink and addictive poison and literally destroys people and families.

Maybe because I drank my life's quota before I was 23 though 🥴

Lillith111 · 24/03/2023 20:58

@Riverlee Can I ask why? What's wrong with someone calling you by your name? Its what its there for!

Gilly0812 · 24/03/2023 20:58

Spitting

StarDolphins · 24/03/2023 20:58

Anybody making any noise in their house or garden that intrudes into somebody else’s house or garden. Sometimes I wish I were Swiss!

…and to that one of the million dog-haters above who wrote “nobody is allergic to children though”? Yeah, actually think I might be. Keep them quiet.

How very glib of you, Dog allergies could kill my boy. You being 'allergic' to children won't kill you. Dogs in enclosed public spaces are, for him life threatening.
He was born at 27 weeks, to a mother addicted to heroin, of which he was weaned from slowly, he's missing part of his brain, has very complex health needs, chronic lung disease from being intubated for over a year he's blind and is non verbal, always will be and is not toilet trained and also never will be.
He also screeches and makes noises a lot so I assume you'd be 'allergic' to him too.

Lillith111 · 24/03/2023 20:58

@Kate0902900908 definitly agree surrogacy shouldnt be socially acceptable

marzipansux · 24/03/2023 20:59

Wallingtonhall · 24/03/2023 18:48

Barbecues in public spaces.

??

TortolaParadise · 24/03/2023 20:59

spitting! sooooo grosss

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 24/03/2023 20:59

Claiming gender stereotypes are innate - whether from a gender ideology perspective or a traditional conservative perspective I don't care - it's really time people were freed from this regressive bullshit.

Eating meat.

War.

Lip fillers. Sorry. I have sympathy with people who feel the need, I'm not immune to the pressure to look a certain way however much I know it's bullshit (see 1st point) but these need to stop.

Autienotnautie · 24/03/2023 21:01

Tarantellah · 24/03/2023 20:48

Blowing your nose at the dining table. It’s disgusting expelling bodily fluids in front of people while they’re eating. I bet they wouldn’t be happy if I spat on the table, which is essentially the same thing. And then they put their own bodily fluids in their pocket or sleeve instead of in the bin, which is just gross.

And don't wash their hands!!!

Lillith111 · 24/03/2023 21:01

@DidyouNO I agree there should be plently of dog free spaces available. And I'm very sorry for your son. But there's no reason someone should't have a dog themselves in a space thats dog friendly. I'm severly allergic to cashew nuts so can't go into thai resteraunts because being around the cooking makes my face swell up. I dont expect other people to stop having thai food

theworldhas · 24/03/2023 21:02

Using aggressive/bad language when discussing or debating on the internet. If you wouldn’t be aggressive with someone face to face you shouldn’t be doing it online.

Celebrities/famous people having 100x or 1000x the carbon footprint of the average person. I’m not an extremist on the environment at all, but there’s such a thing as taking the piss - which is what private jets and massive private yachts are doing. And in this day and age there’s simply no reason to be flying several times a week for interviews or business meetings etc. Few will treat climate change with the seriousness it deserves while the majority of the most privileged among us act as if it doesn’t exist.

Industrial farming. We know it’s cruel and the vast majority would never
approve of treating horses or dogs in such a way so there’s no reason that we should similarly intelligent cows or pigs in such a way. I blame government for not insisting on more humane practises rather than individuals who are buying cheap meat as they may be struggling financially.
