Things that are socially acceptable but you wish they were not

I feel like a bit of a man. For me:

Men pissing by the side of the road. I have see this twice in the past few days, yet there were public loos close by. If a woman did this people would question her sanity, or at the very least think she was undignified yet for men it's considered normal.

Men going shirtless in public. Do what you like in your own garden, but why walk down the high street etc without a shirt. It's never that hot in England - in fact some much hotter climates actually have dignity laws that prohibit both men and women from even showing their arms or legs. Plus you know, sun burn.

Smoking. I hate walking behind someone who is smoking, it blows back in the face of the person behind and gives me a headache. It's unhealthy, expensive and should just be banged in public full stop imo.

Speeding!

As a non-driver I am always getting annoyed about how it seems to be the norm to speed. Those social media alerts people share of where the police are waiting to catch speeding and drunk drivers etc, as if they're doing everyone a favour particularly annoy me! 🙄

Accepting video calls when you're in company. Now we have to put our whole conversation on hold because we can hear both sides of your phone conversation 🙄 be polite and either decline or leave the room to accept the call.

Owning an SUV and parking it off-street, in front of your house, in such a way that the back of the car takes up half the pavement. If it doesn't fit on your drive, it's too big. Park on the street or get a smaller car that fits on your drive.

katepilar · 24/03/2023 20:12

Getting drunk. Dont understand why heavy drinking and being drunk is considered normal and sometimes even expected /ie. first year uni students/.

Some of these have been never been socially acceptable and still aren't. Things like spitting and pissing and other types of disregard for others - we all know how they got here but aren't allowed to say.

When meeting someone new they ask your name and what you do for a living as if your job defines your personality. I wish they ask what my hobbies or interests are instead.

I guess its different for different people/professions. Some people are defined by what they do /ie. architects or archeologists/.

Also spitting - not socially acceptable per say but lots (of men) do it.

Socially acceptable to spit on the Heart of Midlothian in Edinburgh Royal Mile.

Edinburgh folk love seeing the disgust on tourists faces!

madamovaries · 24/03/2023 20:17

Yes, a thousand times. I saw a man pissing in the street today in broad daylight, not even hiding his penis.
And he had the audacity to look at me as though I was being judgmental about it. Grim grim grim.

Owning a SUV full stop. Hate all the mums in their huge cars who can't park properly and take up so much space everywhere, they look ridiculous

Ponderoveryonder · 24/03/2023 20:19

Kids watching tablets on trains without headphones

Coxspurplepippin · 24/03/2023 20:20

Surely pissing in the street isn't socially acceptable?

People getting so drunk that they throw up on the street.

This.

Absolutely vile.

ItsTimeToWine · 24/03/2023 20:23

That having autism/insert any other similar disorder is now an excuse for any rude/inappropriate/bad behaviour.

Indeed. And anyone parking on pavements when there is another option.

VisitationRights · 24/03/2023 20:25

It’s not socially acceptable for men to piss in public, it’s disgusting and against the law per the ‘86 Public Order Act.

User386421986 · 24/03/2023 20:26

People looking at their phones, iPads etc when you are visiting for a short while.
Phones at concerts constantly videoing, we went to one where phones had to be locked away it was far better.

Dunnoburt · 24/03/2023 20:26

Social effing media......and uncontrolled dogs off lead when I'm partaking in my very antisocial hobby!

Surely not? I have never seen anyone doing this. I certainly don’t think it’s socially acceptable.

TeenLifeMum · 24/03/2023 20:28

Young children watching tv on iPads in restaurants without headphones.

HoneyPotBee · 24/03/2023 20:28

Hysterically claiming you’re a victim and taking office.

LividNC · 24/03/2023 20:28

Zoos.

Cannot see how keeping such intelligent animals in cages won’t end up Planet of the Apes and we’d deserve it. And I’m hardly an animal lover as a rule.
